I'm sure you break rules all the time whether it's going 5+ miles over the speed limit or whatever. Would you not argue or at least be a little bit baffled if you got a ticket for it? Or is this just another case of THE RULES ARE THE RULES MUST FOLLOW THE RULES BECAUSE THEY'RE THE RULES?

What a racist statement. We had the same rule in my high school, and it was enforced whether the student was black or white. I bet it is at Fargo South too...

Cops are in power because we put them in power. We want them to be in power. We expect them to use the power. You think it's unjustified, or harassment. Fine, obey, but then fight the speeding ticket in court or file a harassment complaint with the school board or the state human rights department. You want to disobey, or mouth off, or tell the cop to eff off, or some other aggressive, non-compliant response, be prepared to pay the consequences.

Authority also has to follow rules and channels, and as you say the cops have no legitimate power outside what we give them. Ferguson's police force sounds like it acts more like a coercive occupation than a community-chartered and controlled mechanism. Or is perceived by the locals that way, anyway.

I'm all for the cops -- I'm white, they're nice to me. But if I felt like they were acting as self-righteous prison guards and I was always in their eyes a suspect unless I bent my knee to them, I'd probably get pretty mouthy and pretty disobedient.

Ah yes, the completely color blind court system is the answer. I don't think the kid who sagged his pants reached for the officer's gun either.

Thug-like behavior - so the student went chest to chest with the cop to comply with the request?

The cell phone cameras came out when the student went thuggish (chest to chest) with the cop. That's why there isn't cell phone video.

I haven't seen it, but I'm guessing that video will confirm who made first contact and expresses the thuggish behavior.

Either way, to support the white cops (and the "white-hispanic" cop), they would need to do a white cop gesture. Being murdered without a weapon is not a white cop (or white-hispanic cop) gesture. Shooting mother-****ers is.
