Riots and Racists and Looting...OH MY!!!

Re: Riots and Racists and Looting...OH MY!!!

I keep reading and hearing that cops killing people is so much "worse now that it used to be." Does anybody have any evidence of this? Do we know what those rates have been over the course of the last few decades? I don't know if stats were kept on the subject back then.

The poor have camera phones now. What is not recorded never happened.

Re: Riots and Racists and Looting...OH MY!!!

I will say that I find it somewhat laughable when people say "you can't understand the plight of a young black man in America because you're white," but don't reach the same conclusion about another white man who happens to voice opinions or beliefs that are supportive of African Americans. Either we are all precluded by our skin color from having any ability to understand, or none of us are.

This reasoning doesn't fit the case. L and C are discussing B. C is saying "Listen to ME!!!" L is saying, "No, listen to B."

Re: Riots and Racists and Looting...OH MY!!!

If I understood the plight of the black man in America would I then agree with you who believe that it somehow excuses some of them (the criminal ones) of their criminal behavior?

Could I excuse them while all along maintaining that I wasn't excusing them?

Maybe in some sort of purified world of L's mind. But on this message board L is saying, "listen to B. B is right. I should know because I once worked in a food kitchen in inner city Suffolk County Massachusetts."

Re: Riots and Racists and Looting...OH MY!!!

Sweet the noise is back...issues only matter if you can dig in behind a cause! Lives are worthless unless a big group supports them/is against them! Nothing changes...

No one cares about the people dying, only how it can further an agenda!

Re: Riots and Racists and Looting...OH MY!!!

I'm not sure if you're referring to people who post here, but I don't recall anyone claiming to be an "expert" on the plight of poor, black urban men, other than perhaps Priceless. And I don't know if he even claims to be an expert. As I recall he has just suggested he has had more opportunity to work with people in that setting.

By no means am I an expert. Practitioner of many trades, master of none. However, I have worked among the poverty-stricken (regardless of race) and lived and worked in Dorcester, MA. I have not experienced the racism in the South other than through second-hand accounts from my mother, grandmother and others. I have seen how easy it is in predominantly white neighborhoods to get a "Slow - Children at Play" sign put up and how incredibly difficult it is to get that same sign put up in a predominantly black neighborhood. Is anyone seriously going to tell me it isn't a matter of race? Same city. Same income levels. It took 9 months and countless phone calls, letters and showing up at council meeting to get the city to put up a sign. I swear they only put it up to make us go away, not to respond to citizens of their community.

I know, I know. White guilt. Unicorns. Dr. Schweitzer. I call it empathy, compassion and just being a human being. I'm not sure why some of you can't see it, unless it's that you don't want to see it. I guess not even acknowledging it exists is more comfortable than trying to change the system. But I have skin in the game. My nephew is adopted. His mother was white, his father black. Fortunately the city where he lives now has (I believe) a fairly colorblind police force and multiracial city officials. He isn't likely to get shot and killed for playing with a toy gun. I hope he stays here when he grows up. I am not naive enough to believe the world will have changed much by then. Maybe by the time he has kids...

it has to do with votes.

(or officials don't want to insult the blacks by labeling their kids a slow (retards) ;) )

The Garner death from an expert medical perspective

http://www.americanthinker.com/articles/2014/12/a_medical_perspective_on_the_garner_tragedy.html

Having reviewed the video several times now, and being a physician who specialized in the surgery of the very obese, I believe that the cause of Mr. Garner's death was not "police brutality" or negligence, but rather the unfortunate synergy between his disease of morbid obesity and actions most police perform countless times with only transient discomfort to the arrestee. The decision of the Grand Jury was reasonable.

Mr. Garner's demise was the consequence of a confluence of many factors, most of which were beyond the ken of a policeman, and which occurred in devastatingly rapid sequence.

No one is excused for criminal behavior (including police). That doesn't mean all are treated equally. If Garner had been white I honestly think he would have gotten a warning from the police and they would have been on their way. I have doubts it would have escalated beyond that (in my opinion of course).

Why do white college kids get a fine for getting caught with a little pot but black people end up in prison?

On another note why do police in Maine need so much swat gear that only gets used for suicide by cop or in completely overblown scenarios? Why does the South Portland police chief say they need a surplus armored vehicle? What the **** is wrong with us?

Re: Riots and Racists and Looting...OH MY!!!

Because it's better they have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

...when did this country turn into a bunch of pants-crapping wusses who are scared of their own shadows? Seriously, under what even semi-realistic scenario is a police force going to need a tank?

This. People need to realize that there are armor-piercing bullets on the street. I'd rather have my police force over-protected than under-protected.

I don't disagree with any of that. I thought an indictment at the least was in order.

Do they actually go to prison for minor possession? Prison... not jail until they post bail?

I was cuffed and stuffed once for disorderly during a bar fight. I was white and in college at the time as far as I can remember.

Didn't end up in prison though... white privilege and all. :D

Re: Riots and Racists and Looting...OH MY!!!

This is tricky. Escalation. Usually devolves into a chicken-or-the-egg argument.

That is where training comes in (behavior, how to phrase commands, etc).

The second round of riots in Ferguson, the police did it right. They let the little stuff go (throwing rocks, etc). They only acted when the morons decided to try and burn a cop car/flip it over.

Ah haven't you seen Red Dawn?!? Hmmm
