Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 98: Favorite Alter Ego

Good morning, Lodge! So far, finished a load of dishes, a load of laundry, made breakfast and coffee, went for a 40-minute tempo run, and fed the cats. Anything else need to be done?

Les,

I had thought that you started birthday threads for Lodge members. The fact that you did not realize that Boosh is a Lodge member indicates that you have some other criterion for starting birthday threads. Is it just posters whom you know?

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 98: Favorite Alter Ego

I need a ride to the doctor. Not looking forward to going (I hate doctors) but since I can't shake whatever it is I have, it's time for some professional help.

Bummer :(
Hope you get better soon

Thanks... 3rd day of a fever of 100-102 with no other symptoms so I'm guessing it's not the flu. Plus, I've been sleeping 18-20 hrs a day. I have COPD (emphysema specifically) but I don't think that's the problem here as my breathing hasn't been affected. This whole thing has me a bit on edge...

I checked because I knew the name and he was brilliant. I start for Lodgeonians. Others I just rep. Sometimes (:o ) life intervenes and I miss some folks.

Luckily you would never miss someone as important as Ralph though...

Good morning.

Hopefully today isn't so damm busy like yesterday. I'm pretty sure that yesterday was the busiest day I've had since I started this job, but I got alot done! :)
Thanks for the rep, and I think you're right. :)
I won't slap you, but you'll get a nice left jab. And that's if I'm pleasant. Hey, I'm a good friend, I don't want to kill ya. :D
That'll work too.

Morning Lodge.

Goldy, now that my kid's playing hockey, I'm reading up here and there. I saw a website by this guy Dan Bauer, coaches high school in Wisconsin. He thinks there's way too much emphasis on games, not enough on practice. Thinks it's obvious you improve by practicing, not by skating up and down on the big sheet for an hour, maybe touching the puck for a total of three or four minutes. How's it look from where you sit? (Maybe this is too big for one question, eh?)

Tried to e-mail you but your profile says you don't take e-mails.

He's just spouting the line first delivered by the Soviets, and then later adopted by Warroad. Of course practicing more will make you better at the fundamentals. What it won't give you is a passion for the game, or the ability to recognize plays in an uncontrolled environment.

I happen to think that the best players are developed first on the ponds, playing totally un-coached hockey. You develop your ability to handle the puck, to dangle the opponent, and tease the goalies. Then you learn hockey in a structured environment, and you can truly become a complete player. It's like all the Finns were saying during the last Olympics, they didn't fear Team USA because all of those players grew up in structured environments. They grew up without the inventiveness that one gets by playing on the pond, just for the joy of the game. All Team USA could do really well was hit, and that wasn't much help on the Olympic sheet.

I agree some with both. Clearly youth hockey in Minnesota, at least, has too many games. One downside to too many games is not enough time for unscheduled activities, like pond hockey. There are some in the coaching ranks who try to make the best of all worlds, but it's hard. The northern Europeans have developed practices based on "small area games." These are games with 2-6 players in a small area of the ice. They feed the competitive fires and the fun of game playing, but allow for more puck touches than a 6 v 6 or even 4 v 4 game with goalies. These are combined with specific skill drills to teach the kids to skate and handle the puck. These practices take a lot of planning and work on the part of the coaches though so not many coaches in USA do it.

At mites especially, the worst thing you can do is have a lot of full ice games. Really hurts the less skilled players who basically never touch the puck. The better approach is lots of cross ice small sided games and try to group players of similar ability. Again, have the fun of a game, but more chances to touch the puck.

Another good thing about pond hockey is the willingness to take chances and try stuff. If a coach is yelling at kids to "chip it in" "chip it out" and "get it deep", he'll never learn to carry the puck and make a move on someone. If a kid gets yelled at for turning the puck over, he'll make the "safe" play and never develop those skills. The hardest thing for me as a dad is to refrain from criticizing my kid for hanging on to the puck.

Yikes, hope they sort it out and you get better quick.

Good morning, it's Mrs. Eagle's birthday today - I had flowers sent yesterday so I'm a hero. :)

I did make a strategic error last night, played hockey for the first time in ~ 2 years. Other than having feet of concrete, hands of stone, and being fat and out of shape it wasn't too bad.

Wow, did you actually get an appointment??? That's great!!! I just called my doctor again as I feel my primary care physician should see me and this all-encompassing rash (which flared up again overnight so I'm home today waiting for the meds to kick in) and let her know what happened at the Emergency Room. Nothing available till Friday. That's 2 days away. Un-*ing real. I feel like calling the White House to get an appointment with the President and bet I could get in to see him faster.

On a serious note - I hope you feel better. Have you been taking anything?
