Yup. And "up north" is basically anything north of St, Clooud. I still catch myself on roads trips answering the question of "Where are you from?" with "The Cities." :o

And if you're from this area, North Shore is the coast from Boston to NH. :p

There's a professor at Tech who starts the year by asking everyone in the class where they're from. If you're from Michigan and say anything south of Alpena he'll respond "No, you're from Detroit" until you cave.

Had quite a few friends from the west or south in college. Many would eventually ask "Does everyone in Minnesota really visit Hawaii that much?" That's when I learned that the north shore to most outside of MN is the north shore of Oahu.

To me it's the north shore of Lon Guyland which is actually the south shore of Lon Guyland Sound.

I know a couple people that lived in Massapequa for years. They seriously just pronounced it Long Island. Of course, they lived the first 16-18 years of their lives in Illinois. :)

They swear that people drastically exaggerate the accent, though. Much like Fargo does for Minnesotans.

With my job I'm talking to people all over the country on the phone. I can pick up on the accent of wherever they're from, but it is true. Movies and shows have really made a lot more of them than they truly are.

Some of them know where my company is headquartered and ask if I'm from Minnesota. I say that I am and they respond "Had to ask because I don't hear it. Nothing like Fargo."

I chuckle and just say it must be because I was born and raised in The Twin Cities. It is really because very few people actually talk like that. Older generations in the Iron Range, maybe. But still not that bad.

I haven't lived there for quite a while. :)

Often people ask me if I am from New York. I have never been specifically asked if I am from LI. However I am not sure if people from Queens are supposed to say Lawn Guyland.

On the Range? There is an accent even with the younger generations. Maybe not as thick, but it's there. Same with Da-loot.

The general MN accent, well, Kurt Russell nailed it in "Miracle." I can't describe it, but I know it when I hear it, and it isn't the elongated "o"s. Similar to Da Yooper accent.

North Shore is north of Bahstin and below the NH bodah.

I am from Mass but lived behind an Air Force base when I was a kid. Moved overseas and went to an AF base school, lived in the English countryside and then moved back here. When I take those FB tests for accent it can never figure me out. I am a natural mimic. Depending who I talk to depends on what I sound like.

Yeah, the "North Shore = Hawaii" thing is pretty ubiquitous out west, but so is traveling to Hawaii.

Drive by from Springfield, IL. Nice to be back in The Union after a week in the confederacy. I can't believe how depressing MS is. I swear it's a third world country.
