Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #186: Summer Heat

So, I think I have to burn another 5~ days of vacation on top of the 10~ days I already have scheduled for the end of the year. Also, was "advised" to take a week or two block next year, because, and I quote, "It's easier to schedule around."

1. For the first problem, I said choose a week, any week, this year, I'll just take it off. Already had requested (in various stages) every Monday/Friday for the rest of the year, half were denied due to too many others having it off.

2. For the second problem, I'll take my vacation how I please. Probably going to work 4 day weeks for a few months next year. Except for the annual Houghton trip, I won't be going anywhere, and a week off would drive me nuts.

I hate that -- I completely agree with your second point. If we don't have an actual vacation planned (either destination or things we want to do locally), then having a week off is a waste of my time. I end up either doing nothing productive for the bulk of my time and then scrambling to do something worthwhile or I just end up scheduling myself for shifts. I would rather take 3-4 days off when I need a break or have something light planned.

The first year when we switched how we calculate PTO....I ended up taking every Fri aft off from Jan until mid-March, and the first two weeks of March off (hockey). I was bored out of my mind after the first week of March. I actually like to work.

Same here. Unless I've got something like a trip planned, burning 40 hours of AL taking a week off is a pretty big waste on my part. I do appreciate the occasional brain break, though.

What I'll do is leave at noon the Friday of a long weekend. That way I still can get stuff wrapped up for the week and I basically have a four-day weekend for the low price of 4 hours of AL. (Sometimes 3 hours...59 minute rule for the win!)

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #186: Summer Heat

Must be nice for you guys! :D

My vacations are a) scheduled by the week (Sunday-Saturday, an important distinction considering our shifts are not M-F and varied) b) limited to a certain amount of people (15% to be exact) c) done by bid in December, though if a week is open you can ask for it and d) no vacation or time off is allowed during "peak season" (Thanksgiving to New Years). I'm given 3 weeks that I have to take, paid at 45 hours (will be bumped to 4 weeks in July as that will be my completion of 10 years), one "option week" paid at 40 hours, and 4 "option days" I can use at times. Sick time accumulates at 5.33 per month (though I rarely have any banked up due to my daughter or wife and other things). Our attendance policy sucks enough it's hard to just be off a day.

The vacation a week at a time is a bit weird but it works. Working physical labor + outside in crap weather means a week off is nice.

Good Morning, MEUSA! :)
Good Night, Jimjamesak! :)

Good Morning to the rest of tLodge! :)

Good Morning Lodge.

Finally rode the bike to work today. Roads were mostly empty. About half the state took off early for the long weekend. Easy, quick ride of 3+ miles, not Ralph level riding by any stretch.

AC is dead. Replacement will run about $3200 after rebate. They'll put it in Tuesday. Looks like only one bad day/night to endure on Monday/Monday night.

Good. Hopefully I can get out of work early.

And this weekend will mark my 15th Anniversary with my company. :)

Go to the Frozen 4, like a normal person. :p

Love telemarketers. For today's survey, I was Robert Probert. She didn't have a clue, nor a prayer by the time I got done.

For the Boston members, I am currently reviewing plans for the remodel of a Lifetime Fitness in Newton (Chestnut Hill). This company does all Lifetimes.

On another note, I am baffled by people who won't take all the vacation time they have coming. I can't imagine being unable to keep busy for a week at a time. Especially in the summer - so many things to do. If management won't let you, or if you're too indispensable to be gone, that's another thing, and you should be able to get paid for it in that case.

In my previous profession this would have been impossible both because it would have been very unfair for the other people who worked with me needing to cover problem solving that needing to last 3-4 days and because I would have been pounded when I got back to work. Legally should I have been able to? Yes. Being considerate of my fellow workers (which I feel should be part of the equation - no way.

When I was a nurse you had to put in before the next month's time sheet was made up. Seniority ruled.

First NP job- for the first few yrs we shut down for 2 weeks in July and another practice covered us. After that we worked with each other to cover when the other person took off. As it got bigger the Docs covered for each other and the NP/PAs worked it out amongst themselves. It was never an issue.

Last job- the first NP working there was a passive aggressive b1tch. We were supposed to work it out but she would buy tix somewhere and announce she was taking off. the Boss Lady never grew gonads about that. Eventually any time I tried to take off was a problem. It got so bad it was almost worse taking time off than not. I got 'punished' for taking time off- schedule was pounded before and after vacation, nothing was done in my absence. Hmmm, remind me why I am not working there anymore?,

See above. Went around about this in what was attempted to be a professional way. Saying screw you to patients was not really possible. For the last 2 yrs I didn't take all my vacation. Was supposed to carry over but more and more disasters delayed things. Didn't have to be that way. THe first job, where everyone was professional and considerate we never had a problem.

This all makes me sooooo glad I am not where I was. :)
