Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #170: Fair Weather

Morning Lodge.

At BSM someone hired coaches to run the Captains' practices. They hired Andy Ness from Pro Edge Power and some of his assistants, generally 2 there at each session. Given the low cost to us parents, I assume some of the wealthy parents picked up the tab for the coaches. The prices I paid per hour were WAY lower than a typical pre-season tune up clinic. The cost seemed to be purely ice time. BSM's captains missed many of the practices because they were all busy playing in the Midwest High School Elite League.

We typically did the same, but we didn't pay the coaches, we had highly qualified people volunteering their time. Our Elite League guys were in town for most of our practices because they played earlier than 9:30 on Sunday, Monday, or Tuesdays. Down here, we don't exactly have the great resources such as Ness. Nonetheless, the captains or their parents are likely the most involved in hiring an outside coach.

So, we have a list of 8 guys that needs to be cut to six tomorrow; three guys are gone for sure, we're struggling with keeping seniors on JV. We're going to need to reload next year, big time, so it's not easy to cut a sophomore or junior.

It's going to be nice to not have hockey tonight. The last two nights I've had High School and squirts; at least it'll keep me out of trouble.

Oh, and holy **** I'm 21 years old tomorrow.

I think BSM had to hire someone because the practice times were so early. No parents could be there at 3 PM each day. I'm sure Mark Austin could have run them as he used to coach the Fire.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #170: Fair Weather

Balsamic pork in the crock pot
2 batches of Swedish pancakes cooling to be frozen,
dishes done (first batch)
roasted a bunch of summer squash
frze the rest of the pork,
packed up and froze the chicken stock I made the other day
now some more cleaning....

so behind from taking the Imitrex the other day. Motivation killer!

I hear you. The Norco I was on totally killed my motivation.

What time is dinner?

Good afternoon Lodge.

Since I have a bunch of PTO to burn I decided to take this week off. No plans. No agenda. Just hanging out and doing nothing.

I am making plans to head up to watch BSU play this weekend. It will be just the boys as Mrs. g will be in DC to accept the award her school won.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #170: Fair Weather

Well, I decided to use my "College Nights" access to Wild tickets to grab a couple just now for tonight. Sitting 22 rows up between the end zone faceoff and the goal line. $82.50 total for two of them. I figured I should take advantage now before I get too busy with hockey, and what better excuse than an early birthday present for myself.

If any of you guys ever want cheap tickets to a week night Wild game, let me know and I can get them for you. They're the email tickets and they're $40 for lower level. I can get up to 4.

Back in 2000-2001 season, the 200-level seats behind the nets were $10/game, and for those who've not been to the Xcel Center, that's a really good view of the ice. Now a cheap seat is $40. That's nuts.

While I'm at a game, I generally check twitter if I am looking for an injury update, otherwise I'm off my phone. I don't like to talk much to people at games either; I want to watch the play, as I like analyzing it. Twitter helps me analyze it some more after the game, because I cam go back and virtually get a play by play of hat various people were saying watching the game.

I was always hesitant on twitter, but I've had it for probably 16 months and I can't imagine life without it. It's truly an amazing source of information.

And yes, I read my twitter feed in the morning with my cup of coffee.:)

All right, fair enough. I usually don't let facts get in the way of my opinions, but for you I'll make an exception. :p

A captain's practice is a practice run by the captains, no coaches permitted. It's the team getting used to each other before the coaches are allowed to spend time with them. MSHSL and the NCAA puts limits on the times, these are formally informal ways for players to skirt the rules.

Captains' Practice is virtually as literal as it sounds. After July 31st, hockey coaches cannot have any on ice contact or coaching of their players until the official start of the season which was Monday. To get in shape and ready for the season, the parents of the captains generally book 15-20 ice times from September-November for the boys to skate. Captains generally lead the practices and are responsible for drills and setting up scrimmage times, etc.

At BSM someone hired coaches to run the Captains' practices. They hired Andy Ness from Pro Edge Power and some of his assistants, generally 2 there at each session. So really it's a Parents' and Outside Coaches Practice?

Ah, forget it. I figured it was something like this. (It ticks me off. What if you [as a teen] are expected to have a job? What if you're on the baseball team? Etc. Never mind. It's just yelling into a hurricane.)

Thanks for the answers; I appreciate you taking the time. Plus, as I work my way up as a coach, I have to learn about this. Otherwise I'll be the loser who says, "So, when do we have tryouts?" And everybody'll laugh. "Tryouts?!? The team's already in place, man! They've been set as a team since that invite-only 'Spring Hockey' years ago!" Me: "There's an invite-only Spring Hockey team?"

(That's an exaggeration; I learned about the invite-only Spring Hockey league last year when, after our season was over, we asked one of my son's friends over one weekend. Can't, he's doing Spring Hockey. "Spring Hockey?," says naive me. "Never heard of it!" Then the other dad had to figure out how not to make the "Can't tell if you're serious" face.)

So, how about this weather?

OK, I know I am a girl and not getting it but sheesh. What happened to well rounded 3 season athletes. They aren't allowed anymore. Reading this all makes me realize how glad I am that lil runs. You are either faster or you are not when you run. People have forgotten it is a game and these kids are kids. If you want your kid to be a kid then he is screwed no matter how good he is because he gets left behind by all those people who politic and 'position' the kid to be seen in kindergarten. No unwritten rules about playing year round or your kid won't improve (so your kid gets overuse injuries at 14 instead of 20).

In reality the percentage of kids that will move on is miniscule. The percentage of kids who missed out on a lot because they thought they would move on is enormous. Mr les and I were talking the other day. Lil is All conference, running All-States and doing quite well. We were remembering the people who told us that he would never amount to anything because we weren't willing to invest or take things seriously (like don't let the kid swim in the pool for a half an hour because they had a game 28 hrs later). All those people who paid thousands of extra dollars to position their kid and have him play on 'Select' teams are still waiting for the moment of discovery. Those kids missed parties, doing all sorts of things that kids should do, played on 2 teams, had 300$ sticks at age 8. Not one of those kids is playing at a high level. They are playing mediocre hockey on the 3rd or 4th line, at the Local HS. One of them might make a D III team. I always ranted about how nuts they were. Mr just got round to saying they are nuts 3 yrs after he stopped playing. You learn something new about your spouse every day :p
