Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #170: Fair Weather

I think it would now be pretty easy if one lived in downtown and worked there. JF lived a ways out in Uptown neighborhood though, making it a little harder. There are now a Target store and a couple supermarkets downtown.

It would still suck to not be able to visit friends and family though, because they don't live downtown. Or to not be able to buy anything of any size because you can't carry it home. Or to not have a yard and land to play fetch with the dog, or ride 4-wheeler, and have bonfires.

We're already thinking that it will be sooner, rather than later, that we'll be wanting to move further out and buy an actual decent amount of land. 40 acres or something like that, not a lot, but much better than the **** 2.5 acres I have now.

I just don't understand it. I can't go more than a day or 2 at the very most without driving.

So what's coming first then becoming Huskyfan's neighbor along the shores of Lake Superior or the 40?

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #170: Fair Weather

It is. We have to cut six guys this year

There were 55 kids listed in the last week of Captains' Practice for BSM last week, 25 upper classmen. But about 7 of them are 8th or 9th graders who are already on a bantam team and just doing it for the experience. They expect to keep 34 or 35 kids (last year had 38, don't know why the change) so figure they will cut somewhere between 10 and 15 kids (maybe more as there could be more trying out who were not a Captain's practice - they talked about 60+ trying out last year).

Jr did not feel good about yesterday's session. They did some 1 on 1 drills that he said did not go well for him. Then they went into scrimmages that he felt more comfortable with. The rest is all scrimmages as Pauly has said that is what he cares about - how do you play the game? Not how you look in a drill. Do you make a difference in the game? I really hope Jr makes it to the scrimmages with other schools on Friday and Saturday, at least.

Although it's all screwing up plans for the Gophers-Mavs games this weekend. Do I try to sell the tickets now, or wait to see how he does?

Well, if you won't be using your seats on Saturday, I'd be interested.

We are scrimmaging tomorrow and Thursday to get a better look, but four kids are pretty much cut already. We have three scrimmages Saturday and three PP/PK sessions that day as well. Based on summer and Captains' Practice, how did T feel about making the JV squad? Also, is he a Sophomore or Junior this year? We're keeping 34 this year as well.

Jr is a soph. No idea how likely he is to make JV. It's a numbers deal right now. I think they could take as many as 10 skaters from the sophs and there seem to be 19. Is he in the upper half? Don't know, and he is never a good judge. I have to pick him up tonight and I may be a bad parent and go into the arena to peek through the windows at the tryouts.

The Saturday tickets may become available. Mrs and I are going to the school's big fundraiser dinner that night and not sure if Jr is willing or able to drive over by himself or with a buddy. He's driven the route, but with me in the car.

Backwards nigh tonight. Waffles, bacon already dressed in the flannels while we listen to Mr les on the radio. Used to do this all the time when lil was actually lil instead of big lil. Have a blasting migraine- day 3- and in no shape to cook real food. :(

Been there, done that, bought the shirt.

Lovely day here in the Springs. Heading back to the Olympic Training Center in an hour. One of our business units is having an incentive trip out here and tonight they are having a reception in the Visitor's Center and they have a cauldron and torch lighting thing. Looking forward to checking that out.

Took a quick walk to a 7-11 to grab a water and OJ and felt a little lightheaded. First time I've dealt with the altitude I guess.

On my iPhone!

(Psst! I'm setting this all up to heckle you for being one of these young whippersnappers, who thinks they're being all modern and Twitter-i-fied, and how you think you're just like people who used to get their scores from the paper, but really you're focused the entire time on your phone watching the constant updated feeds, even when you're at an actual game -- we've seen the pix! Student section at a game, and half the people have their necks craned down looking at their device -- that's not like getting your scores from the paper, ya goofball! Plus you're not even watching the game you're at. Life is passing you by, man! How about enjoying the game you're actually at?!?)

Hmm, that's interesting. You said it's like people used to check scores in the paper. So you don't check your Twitter feeds until breakfast?

:D

Back to semi-seriousness: Sorry for being a noob, but what's a Captains' Practice?

Sorry about the headaches, les. :( That being said, I love breakfast for dinner.

A captain's practice is a practice run by the captains, no coaches permitted. It's the team getting used to each other before the coaches are allowed to spend time with them. MSHSL and the NCAA puts limits on the times, these are formally informal ways for players to skirt the rules.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #170: Fair Weather

Blech. Week is getting worse. Found out today that they are probably changing some things up at work, and I won't be a main worker at the offsite. They are having the other guy handle it (still dunno how he's pulling that off, pretty much everyone knows I'm faster/better at the job than he is), and I will only be sent down there to help if it's needed. It's not for SURE yet, but if it doesn't happen, I'll be shocked. :(

Still hiring, I guess, so for anyone who needs a job...

Well let me know what your plan is, as I'd be interested in possibly going up after our scrimmages.

While I'm at a game, I generally check twitter if I am looking for an injury update, otherwise I'm off my phone. I don't like to talk much to people at games either; I want to watch the play, as I like analyzing it. Twitter helps me analyze it some more after the game, because I cam go back and virtually get a play by play of hat various people were saying watching the game.

I was always hesitant on twitter, but I've had it for probably 16 months and I can't imagine life without it. It's truly an amazing source of information.

And yes, I read my twitter feed in the morning with my cup of coffee.:)

Captains' Practice is virtually as literal as it sounds. After July 31st, hockey coaches cannot have any on ice contact or coaching of their players until the official start of the season which was Monday. To get in shape and ready for the season, the parents of the captains generally book 15-20 ice times from September-November for the boys to skate. Captains generally lead the practices and are responsible for drills and setting up scrimmage times, etc.

If you have anymore questions, feel free to ask.:)

Well, 6 am practice is going to come quickly. I was up at 615 today too. I'm requiring more sleep right now which is probably a good thing because once games start for high school I'm need it.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #170: Fair Weather

Yo. Chilly night down here in Lake Charles, LA (by southern standards, anyways.) Probably below 40, with a decent northern wind on the water. Glad I get to stay inside with the heat.

Morning

I see Starbucks has mugs with the city you are in printed on them (skyline and name) I kinda want one, but not just from Pitt. Anyone wanna a trade a Minneapolis or St. Paul? :)

I guess I'd be open to other cities too.

At BSM someone hired coaches to run the Captains' practices. They hired Andy Ness from Pro Edge Power and some of his assistants, generally 2 there at each session. Given the low cost to us parents, I assume some of the wealthy parents picked up the tab for the coaches. The prices I paid per hour were WAY lower than a typical pre-season tune up clinic. The cost seemed to be purely ice time. BSM's captains missed many of the practices because they were all busy playing in the Midwest High School Elite League.
