I'd rather have a kid that plays three sports and doesn't go on to college or NHL level of the games than one kid who looks at a sport as a job. Too many times I've heard about kids getting burned out on hockey because that's all they did growing up. Also, the sport should be seen as a reward, only to be played once homework and chores are done. If I ever have kids, they're going to despise me for being a hard ***, I just know it. Yet this is how everyone in my neighborhood grew up.
They won't hate you; they'll greatly appreciate it when they're old enough to understand why you were.

Thanks all for the birthday wishes!

Speaking of tazers, I did mention to y'all that I was taxed this summer just to say I had been, correct?

Power hour is not an option in Minnesota.. You can't legally drink at a bar here until 8 am of your 21st. Tonight I'm going to the tap house to have dinner and then meeting up with hockey coaches and a few dads. After that it's in the hands of my friends. May God have mercy on my soul.

that must be a new rule or one bars didn't always follow!

The laws were put in place a couple/few years ago, along with some young driver restrictions. They weren't in place when I turned 21, but that didn't matter much for me because I turned 21 in July and my buddies were all working out of state that summer. Sucked. That and I had a summer school final in microeconomic theory the day after by b-day so I couldn't go out anyway.

Well, I have a high school player. The boy made JV and has been told by the head coach that he will get to dress for a few varsity games - assuming of course that he earns it. He's a grinder and a gamer though, so he'll get his shot. All effort.

He's loving every minute of being part of a high school team - the camaraderie of being on a high school team is nothing like youth hockey and he's starting to get that now.

I don't expect him to play beyond high school (maybe club or D-3 but he'd have to develop a bit) but even getting this chance with a really good (great) program will be something that he carries with him forever.

Happy for him and excited to get to follow him now as a fan (and team mate/opposing player as he's been coming to my men's groups since bantams ended) instead of a coach although I'll miss being on the bench in games with him.

Okay, enough rambling... :)

Good for him! Best of luck to him.

Jr will get to skate in scrimmages against other schools tomorrow night. If he hangs on through that he'll get a couple more Saturday, including against Edina! That would be fun.

He'll be playing for Verona where your recruit Tarek Baker played (1 season I believe?) and whose brother Brogan (Baker) is back playing for.

Good luck to your boy. I've got a couple of buddies who are in the same boat as you and are still waiting as a couple of schools down here aren't finished with tryouts. The wait can be tough.

One thing that can elevate a kid where all else is (relatively) equal is effort level. I know this seems obvious, but having been an evaluator for 8 years for our youth hockey tryouts, I can tell you that the vast majority of coaches pick up on this and look for it when kids seem to be about the same level.

A coach can work with a competitive kid who battles, so they're more likely to want them over a kid who may skate around a cone well or run a drill well but who takes shifts off.

A cliche, but leave it all out there and make their decision tough. A couple of good scrimmages can change a lot and solidify an opportunity.

Hope it goes well!

Work's been slow the last two days...too slow. It better continue tomorrow, dangit. Can't wait until the weekend.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #170: Fair Weather

There is nothing more frustrating than having your kid ask for help and opinion and then trying to tell you why it is wrong because it means exerting effort. Yeah, well, do it yourself.

Well, work is going to be a little rough these last 2 weeks. We have a green deckhand on my watch, and he's going to need some more supervision than our usual guys. Lot more instructing on the fly, but part of the job. Hopefully he's a quick learner and can get into the groove faster than I anticipate.

Have to leave your warm cozy cabin eh? :p

They allowed PSU to get 37 shots?
 no idea whether they were quality shots or not. If they were all from the perimeter who cares? Missing Mr les. This is the longest he has been gone for hockey in about 20 yrs. When we were first married they did the western swing on January break. Adding Notre Dame is a serious bummer to the league. Messes stuff up and why we should get someone so far out of the area escapes me. Seems like I missed the memo that I should genuflect every time they mention a Catholic big football school. Sigh.
