Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 143: A Golden ;) Oldie

Tax return filed on Sunday, Minnesota refund in my savings account by Tuesday. Well played, Minnesota. Well played.

Yo, Loj.

Pizza-wise, we really liked Sammy's in Duluth. Stumbled upon it totally by accident -- just driving through, kids were starving, took an exit and drove till we found a restaurant -- so it probably helped that our expectations were low. Still, good food, great atmosphere; a nice find.

(I suppose people will come on here and say, "Dude, you're lucky you didn't DIE! NOBODY goes down there anymore!!!" Or something like that. :p)

Ran the numbers, and I'm not paying the taxes until April. "Waved my magic wand" for those who were told there'd be no math.

I've never tried it, but people who have been here longer than I have love Sammy's.

I don't get the squeamishness some people (aka "women") have about urinating in the shower, I don't get it at all!

After I work out, I shower to wash off the perspiration.

Now, to me, perspiration is much yuckier than urine fresh from the bladder. Urine only becomes smelly after it has been out of the bladder long enough for bacteria to begin to grow in the organic matter it contains. Unless you have just eaten asparagus in the past several hours, fresh urine generally does not have much much of a smell.

If given the choice between being forced to drink perspiration or being forced to drink fresh urine.....I'd ask for "neither." However, if really forced....."we report, you decide."

Anyway, since perspiration is already being washed down the drain, why would someone be bothered by something less smelly or germ-infested?

I guess emotion trumps reason quite often.

Davanni's is decent for Chicago style, albeit a bit on the greasy side.

The best thin crust pizza I've ever had has to be Dave's/Keith's in Bemidji.

That's about right for Davanni's, but there's nowhere else to get a decent Chicago-style slice. Maybe Old Chicago, but it's too bread-like there.

For thin crust, Carbone's actually makes an underrated and pretty good pizza. Otherwise, when I'm feeling frou-frou I'll get a Punch Pizza. :o (I don't care what you say, they do an awesome little pizza.)

Also, les, that's hilarious. :D

Morning, Lodge. All this talk about taxes makes me think I should do them... if only I had all my forms. :o Hopefully next week.

Hammer, trying to figure out my tax situation with my parents. My Dad seems to think he can claim me as a dependant for one more year, but according to what I'm reading, I don't qualify. As I understand it, I would have had to be enrolled as a full time student for 5 calendar months, as well as having 50% of my support given to me by them. I finished classes up in April, but formally graduated May 6, and I know for a fact they didn't take 50% of the support due to my job since June and what I have made since. What is your interpretation of this, because my old man is saying the woman who does his taxes seems to think I qualify.

If I want deep dish I go to Green Mill.

.

Unfortunately with all three of us being diagnosed as being gluten intolerant, we can't just have pizza anymore. :(

On the plus side, Pizza Luce is really good and now has a very good gluten free pizza and several other gluten free menu items that are really good. Their gluten free rolls are the best I've had. They also have a St. Louis Park location that is close to our house. Davani's and Broadway both have gluten free options now, but they're not as good as Luce. Other good choices close to us are Tavern on France and Pinstripes as both have tasty gluten free pizzas. All these are individual size, thin crust only though.

Check the Cooks thread - Walrus posted a gluten free pizza recipe. Looked pretty good; I was thinking about trying it over spring break, when I have some time to cook.

How were you "housed"? If your employer provided residence as part of your job (similar to a college dorm), I believe you could claim it. However, depending on how much you made on the boat, you'd be severely disadvantaged from a standpoint of taxes. I'd recommend to run the numbers both ways, as it may be advantageous for you to file single, instead of as a dependent.

Lived at my parents house (well, from February-present, my Mom's place) but that isn't really going to be the deciding factor for the dependant situation. I don't intend on filing as 'somebody will claim me as a dependant' since I don't believe I fall under that category given the scenario I'm in. I ran both last night and, as I expected, filing as single, not being claimed as a dependant nets me about 700 bones, compared to a net loss of 100 if I'm claimed as a dependant.

Yeah... my father did that to both me and my sister.... I was quite annoyed because it screwed me for which I'd get nothing, but I only made 9K that year (tutoring+GA)... my sister on the other hand made more than that out of undergrad... and she was royally ticked... but then again, that doesn't take much.

That happened to me when I was 24 (or early 20's anyways). However my parents made so much more in gain by claiming me that they paid my tax debt for me and still came out ahead.

And I assume your family is able to handle the extra $3800 in "taxable income"? There's also the Earned Income Credit (if your family qualifies).

That's why I just plain moved out and got my own place. Aside from the fact my job was halfway across the state.

I haven't looked up the actual rule, as I understand it, as long as he (and his wife if they file jointly) contributed at least 50% of your support for the calendar year. Depends on what you made vs what the "support" was worth, and how it is measured (only room & board? or tuition too?). Did they give you a car or did you buy it?

The most important thing is to be consistent between the two of you.

Of some importance is the tax rate on your last dollar of income vs the tax rate on his last dollar of income. If it is too close to call, whomever has the higher tax rate on the last dollar of income "should" get your personal exemption. Even if he claims you as a dependent you still get the standard deduction for your income.
