Re: Rep Retirement Lodge 143: A Golden ;) Oldie

Another rough day of class. My pate a choux turned into soup, my egg bread didn't cook all the way through, my baguettes still suck, and my chocolate cream pie was deemed too salty. It's clear I need all the practice I can get.

Now I'm listening to Radiohead's OK Computer so I can forget about today.

So we are royally screwed at work after next Friday. My counterpart's last day was Sunday, and one of our front end managers is leaving next Friday leaving two of us to run the front end. This is not going to be fun.

This is where I point and laugh at your job, isn't it? :o

bbdl: New clue is up. At first I didn't think it worked, but it could still point to where we were looking. Maybe.

Yeah, it does. Before I bought the house I went through that, and the efile definitely captured it. I never got the renters credit, because I never had paid enough, but thats a different story. Now that I pay a **** ton and a half in mortgage interest, I'm getting mine. :p
What rate are you paying on the loan?

As long as your mortgage interest+property tax+state income tax exceeds the standard deduction, you'll be itemizing. In other words, you'll be itemizing probably for as long as you have a mortgage payment (possibly longer than that if you make a lot of money / get hit hard on state income taxes).

Morning Lodge.

Bantams beat a rival who had beaten them in first tourney and was tied with them for 1st in District last night. 5-0 at their place, big shots edge too. Jr. had a goal - 4th try in the sequence - jr shot, RW shot rebound, RW shot rebound, jr scores finally off third rebound, meaningless 5th goal.

Morning from windy Houston. Rained hard yesterday down here, much needed. I get to go play tugboat video games all day for the next 3 days, then fly home Saturday before a quick turnaround and driving to NYC Sunday AM to go see people and leave a massive steaming pile in front of my Alma Mater's new President's place on campus. (Kidding, but I've considered it).

Well I emptied all of the cabinets and countertops in my kitchen and bathroom because the exterminator is coming to my building today. My back is hurting. :(

Oh, and simultaneously the water has been cut off today. :( :(

Jr. had a goal . . . meaningless 5th goal.

No such thing!

My kid had a play this weekend which -- to me -- was an amazing breakthrough. Scrum in front of his net, puck gets knocked into the corner. My kid's the only one who sees it, and skates into the corner to get it. When he gets close to the boards, he takes a second to look up the ice to see if there are any defenders nearby. There aren't, so no one will intercept it deep in his own end, and he whacks it all the way down.

I had an big parental surge of pride, as in, "My kid is using his brain! All right!" :o

As long as your mortgage interest+property tax+state income tax exceeds the standard deduction, you'll be itemizing. In other words, you'll be itemizing probably for as long as you have a mortgage payment (possibly longer than that if you make a lot of money / get hit hard on state income taxes).

You want to make sure that it exceeds the average price difference between your federal and state income taxes. As an example for a single person, in NYS, the standard deduction is $7500 (it has been for years), therefore for this tax year, it would only make sense to itemize if those contributions exceeds $6600 (since the federal standard deduction this year is $5700). If you wanted to go even further, check the differences in the progressive tax systems and make an according decision. In my bracket, since the federal to state rate is at about a ratio of 3 to 1 (minus my deductions for qualified dividends), it would make sense for me to move closer to the federal deduction. Also, you want to pay attention to how exemptions work. In NYS, you are not allowed to claim yourself or your legally unionized partner as an exemption, so the balance shifts closer to the state. I'm not going to take the time to figure out the maximization of standard/itemized, as that would involve math (I've done enough of that in this post, and I humbly apologize to the liberal arts majors), and I don't have the time to crunch the numbers.
