Put an older 16" CRT moitor up on Craigslist Monday, asking $10. Got one reply yesterday, sort of. First e-mail was a long string of characters (a cookie, or some chunk of code). I responded, asking if he was interested in the monitor, and if he'd like to swing by and look at it. He responded (at around 4:45) that he wanted to know if I could meet him at a local mall at 6pm. I told him that wasn't good for me (I had someone else coming to look at a TV around that time), but Wednesday night would be fine.
I get no response until Wednesday morning, when he asks if I could meet in Derry (a town about 20-30 minutes from Manchester, depending on locations). I happen to drive through there on my way home, so I say, "sure, between 5:00 and 5:30" (once again, I have other people coming to look at stuff). He responds, "So you couldn't now?" I tell him I work until 4:30. He responds with, "ok".
I don't know how everyone else deals on Craigslist, but my understanding is that it is largely based on going to the seller to view the product, then deciding whether or not to buy. I've only bought a couple things there, but I have gone with my buddy on "CL runs". I've also sold a few things. In each case, the buyer goes to the seller. His first request wasn't bad - the mall is in Manchester - but to ask me to drive upwards of 30 minutes so he can get a cheap monitor? Nuh uh.
In the end, I don't think he'd have bought it. Even though I mention in the title and description that it's a CRT, I also mention that it has a flat screen. I'm willing to bet all the money I made selling stuff this afternoon that this guy thought it was a smaller LCD monitor for $10.
On the other end of the spectrum was the guy that bought the 33" TV I'd listed for $30 (~15 year old Sony CRT; big, curved screen, exceptionally heavy, but still in great condition). Dude e-mails me, "$20?" That's it. He was the second inquiry, so I follow up with the first one (which falls through as the people never show up, and never call or e-mail me), and ask if he's still interested. I get a response after work. He's working until 8 tomorrow morning, but wants to know where I am, as he might be able to get away for a few minutes. I tell him the address, he responds that he'll be here around 6:30. 6:40, he shows up, takes a look, I show him that it works, he hands me a 20, and we pile it into his car. Cake.
