Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #112: Son of "Filling in for the night shift"

Successfully evaded the advances of the bus-driver for my area without offending anyone with the following conversation:

Bus Driver: Hi! How are you today?
Me: Cranky - I hate this weather. I miss the cold.
Bus Driver: Hey - are you single? I prefer the cold and I like a girl that likes it colder.
Me: Me too.
(gets onboard the bus)

Why on earth would you think our similar weather preferences would mean that we have anything else in common?

Either way - he seemed okay with that response and I get to continue to ride the bus hassle free, I hope.
That sounds like it could be an opening scene for a rather unsavory movie.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #112: Son of "Filling in for the night shift"

Speaking of slumps, MN managed to leave another 2 men on base in the 6th inning of the resumed game against the Yanks. Surprise, surprise. :p

'ewe, the only way I could see liking similar weather being a starting point is if both people like doing things outside. Using it on its own without tying it into outdoor activities is just stupid, though.

You also could have said, "So does my boyfriend." Or, "Sorry, not single."

Your answer was probably best, though.

still hot.

in fact, hotter out here farther away from town.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #112: Son of "Filling in for the night shift"

Not hot here anymore, it was 90 when I left for baseball, by the 5th inning I wished I'd have brought a coat with me. Once the wind flipped off the water, it cooled down

Afternoon/evening Lodge.

So I think I'm gonna go with the automatic, since that's what the local Chrysler/Jeep/Dodge conglomodealer has in stock, and I think a manual would get annoying in Anchorage's surprisingly congested traffic. Found a used car lot with a 2006 Wrangler for $19K, but I figured why buy that when I can pay $5K more for a brand new one with a warranty and a dealership to take it to if I run into trouble. (Jeeps depreciate slowly like trucks.)

Now to pay a visit this weekend and check out just what they have to offer...

If you know me at all, you know I have kind of a naive, trusting, easygoing personality. Add to this the fact that I'm young, fresh out of college with a good job, a first time buyer, and pretty flush with cash. In other words, they're gonna see me coming from a mile away. How do I stop the salesman from taking me for a ride?

Twitch - do online research first (can check sites like cars.com). If you know what you want (sounds like you do), comparison shop on the net. Dealers often have websites with their inventory on there. You could put in your specs and potentially make an offer without setting foot on the lot. Rather than getting something new, I'd suggest looking for something a couple years old - you get the maximized depreciation years out of the way (and thus the price break) while retaining most of the reliability from a relatively new vehicle.

BTW, I just read Bristol Palin bought a condo in Anchorage. She's apparently hoping to settle down with a nice guy. If you don't mind the fact she's a single mom, you could take a shot at her. :D

His MIL would be a MILF, though. Plus he could invite some of us to the wedding, and we could all hit on her. Dumbarse or not, she's insanely hot.

Ugh. NO. She reminds me too much of RC's mom.

Does that mean you'd consider hitting on other MILFs? :D

Bakunin has good advice - if you come into the dealer and say, "order me this, and I'm paying up front", they generally will with few questions asked.

I'd advise you to test-drive other similar vehicles, even if you don't want a 4Runner, FJ or Xterra, and take your comparisons back to the Jeep dealer. Also, as for Jeeps in particular, they package a lot of their popular options with expensive package deals, but you can often order just one thing (say, fog lights) and the dealer can install it upon arrival.

Finally: I just wanted to tell you good luck. We're all counting on you.

Wear the hot dog hat.

My first instinct was to say, "don't wear the hot dog hat", but then I thought about it a little, and figured that while their quick first impression might be the you're an easy target, given a moment to consider the situation, I think they would come to regard you as someone who is so comfortable in his automobile knowledge and in the salesroom environment that you felt no qualms about wearing a hot dog hat into the dealership as you shopped for a new car.

Or maybe they'll try to sell you muffler bearing upgrades for the Jeep you pick out.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #112: Son of "Filling in for the night shift"

Research is correct. As for upsells, research to see if it's worth it, because the salesman will try and sell you on it. Have all your figures ready (how much you'll put for a down payment, if you're paying for it all now, etc etc) and most importantly, if you're getting a loan, how much you'll want to be paying a month and how much you can pay a month (as in, you CAN pay up to x amount a month, but want to only pay y amount a month; this also factors into the total price of the Jeep, aka haggling the price).

It goes without saying don't tip your hand on much of this info, especially financial. And if they can't/won't work with you/for you, walk. They need your business more than you need them.

He can get approved for a car loan via an outside lender before he ever sets foot on a dealer's lot.

Yes, I know. Doesn't mean he has to use all of the loan money. ;)

The point of outside financing is to eliminate the finance side completely from negotiations. The dealers are looking to get prospective buyers to focus on that subject to secure the sale and make money. As far as they're concerned, once you start talking about payments, you've already bought the car.
