Once you get the house, and you get the basics in there (kitchen stuff so that you can eat, bedroom furniture so that you can sleep, etc.), you've got more time than you think. At that point you can take your time and set the place up as you see fit. I bought my place 6 1/2 years ago and I'm still doing things with it. I've got to demo a bathroom, pour a new back porch and replace the cupboards, sink and countertop in my kitchen, likely all by the end of next year.
yep, there will be plenty of stuff to do there over the next couple years. There are a couple tasks that I have on the list to do ASAP after I move in, which is going to be where my $8000 from the government gets spent. Those are: kitchen appliances(need a stove, dishwasher and microwave, stainless steel to match the refrigerator that was left), living room trim, and bathrooms. The bathrooms are interesting...there are 2, but one is mid-renevation and the other is working but needs a little work. My plan is to work on the working bathroom right away, to fix some obvious stuff, get it looking pretty good and do nothing expensive in it. Then focus on completing the second bathroom, which needs tile and fixtures and some other finishing work. They did a really good job on the second bathroom up until this point, but ran out of money before they finished it, so there isn't too much left for me to do to get it completed.

You already know this, but I'd do kitchen appliances, bathroom and living room trim, in that order. You don't need the trim to sit on the couch. You do need the kitchen to eat, and the bathroom to wash.

hmm, ok. Good thing I have plenty of time to figure this out, if I get the house at all. If I do end up getting it, I should take pictures right away and post them and try to get some ideas of what it would look like
Most definitely. We can offer varying opinions so that your entire house doesn't end up yellow/goldenrod/gold and black with white trim.

Agreed. I think most first time homebuyers forget this. Once you own it, there's no hurry to make it your dream house. My parents have been steadily redoing and expanding on theirs for about 10 years.

Do you have experience with this kind of stuff or are you going to be contracting out (just curious).

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #110: Offseason Is Here, So Deal With It.

Ok, that is probably what I would end up going with, except the room is carpet now, and as much as I love hardwood floors, I'm not spending the money on that if I get the house.

The other idea that I had, that I think would look great with the oak trim would be to use all of the light colored wood, not necessarily always oak, and get tan or brown leather couches and make it more of rustic/cabin look, which is something I have always liked.

There is always a nice large area rug from somewhere cheap until you get the feel of the house. Sometimes after you live in it a bit, your mind goes in a very different direction than when you first moved in.

See and people wonder why I adopted the cubbies as my "second favorite" baseball team.

Booooo. :p :D

If you wanna go to a game sometime with some people, let Kat know. Some Stubhub tickets can be had on the cheap (if you plan ahead/or on a whim).

(not a fan of either Chicago baseball team)

Yeah, that is the order I'd be doing it in. Actually the kitchen appliances and first bathroom will hopefully be done in a weekend, since that is minor stuff, then it would only be a couple days to get the living room trim done. All of that I'd like to get done before I move in or as I'm moving in. The second bathroom can wait until I get settled in, since I'd already have one functioning bathroom.

I'm not that much of a fanboy. :p

Yep, that is my plan too, and actually after I get the house to where I want it with the stuff I've mentioned, I have a feeling that I'll be spending a bunch of time working on the yard and garage before doing too much more inside the house.

I don't have experience with it, but my dad and grandpa have alot of experience with home improvement stuff. The two of them added a room onto my parents house when I was younger and they did an excellent job with it.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #110: Offseason Is Here, So Deal With It.

I have to change it in the living room, because the previous owners started changing it over to the lighter colored oak and hadn't gotten to the living room yet, so in the living room there is tacky looking trim that looks like it is from the 70's.

I think the reason I wasn't thinking oak in my head is because my parents' house is all that same style and color of oak and I was thinking I'd go in a different direction.

Will it look ok to have oak trim/bookshelves/tv stand in a room where I'm planning on having black leather couches and a flat screen TV? For some reason it just seems like it clashes.

If you can find it, it might be worth it to try to track down some really red stained Cherry trim, might make for a nice contrast if its all stained the right way. That and how much gum and charactor it has.

Afternoon Lodge, there's a large hole already dug here, just waiting on a Vet to show up to put down a horse here. One of our boarders, but has been here for years.

I think I am more a fan of drunken shenanigans, and for years I was a fan of the perennial underdog, that to be honest I haven’t got used to this whole “winning championships thing”. The good news is both teams are not starting out so good.

Ahhh balance is restored to the universe.

I just found out one of the express buses leave right from Yorktown Mall, I am going to a game in two weeks with some friends and I have quickly become not a fan of driving around this place. So a bus to the game, yeee haa!

Afternoon Lodge!

Well, burning fuel paid off today. I got a 2nd interview with IBM, on site in East Lansing, for May 6th. :)

So, it's mid-60's here right now. Tomorrow? 39, rain. Tomorrow night? 35, rain and snow. Thursday? 41, rain and snow.

Real glad I came home now, I'm going to have to wait to golf until Thursday, when it is back up in the 60's.

Ah, that sucks. :(

The hole is filled now. Didn't get her to drop next to the hole, but thankfully there was enough of us there that we were able to spin her around and get enough ropes on her to pull here into the hole. She hadn't been eating much the past couple of months so that made things easier for us. Got her pulled up to the hole with her legs sticking over it, then got the ropes off and rolled her into it.

That is kinda what I was thinking about before. I really like the look of walnut and cherry with a darker stain. If I can find a color and wood that accents the oak well, that would be great, but I'll have to get samples and look at the 2 at the same time to figure out if it would work.

For what its worth, the wood floor in the dining area is a light color, not sure what kind of wood, I've been trying to figure it out. It doesn't have a fine grain but it has the black specks and lines in it. It looks really awesome, so I definitely would like to be able to compliment that flooring with whatever I do.

Just trying not to get too excited at this point. It's only an interview and I'm sure I'll be going up against 20 other second-rounders for maybe 5-10 entry-level developer jobs.

Still, it's a ray of light in the long, dark tunnel that is the Michigan economy. I think I could learn to tolerate East Lansing. ;)

You should come watch a Huskies hockey game - I can bring my soon-to-be spare jersey for you. :o
