Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #110: Offseason Is Here, So Deal With It.

Morning Lodge

Coordinated a big project for the house this past weekend. We're redoing nearly the entire exterior. Roof, gutters, soffits, fascia and siding. I called one of my life long friends who's in the trades for recommendations on who I should look at to do the job. He immediately said he'd bid on it. He's been a finishing carpenter for the last twenty years, but due to the tough times he, like many tradesmen, will do anything. His brother is a GC and is coordinating the whole thing at "friend" prices. Not that it's going to be cheap, but it has to be done. Having those guys doing all the work means I don't have to take off work while it's being done. I've known these guys for nearly forty years. :)

As soft as the home construction market is, you should be able to get quite deal right now, 30% lower, maybe more

Hi all, happy Monday!

I've been resisting turning the AC on, but I think it might be time. If only so I don't hunt down my neighbor's rooster and turn him into Sunday dinner. (I had the windows open last night, and I swear he started crowing at 3 am. Does they ever sleep?)

Yeah the other day l looked in my fridge, there was pickles, carrot sticks, like 4 pieces of bread and then mayo, ketchup and something else.
No beer? :p

This is one of the things I miss from when I lived in NH. Most of our friends were in one trade or another. So when we needed work done, even it wasn't at a 'friends and family' price, we didn't have to worry about the quality or the work getting done.

Down here it's a whole different story, which started with the home inspector that said this was "one of the best built houses he has ever seen". I'd hate to see the houses that weren't so well built. I'm not a contractor, but I always thought that in well built houses, the joists were evenly spaced and the floors were flat.

Morning, Lodge. Magic of the weekend has worn off already and my stomach is rolling this morning with all the stress. (Yes, it's most definitely stress and not anything else in there.) No end in sight for either issue unfortunately.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #110: Offseason Is Here, So Deal With It.

Ok, Lodgers, I am jumping the gun here, because I still haven't heard any more news on the new house, so I have no clue whether I'll get it or not.

but, whatever

I've been trying to figure out what I should do with the living room/dining room/kitchen area of the house. It is a split level, so when you walk in the front door, to the left you can go up 6 stairs to the upper level. The upper level is completely open, it is in an L shape, with the small leg of the L being the kitchen, the corner of the L being the dining room area and the long leg being the living room. The stairs going up are a very nice, natural colored (no stain) oak. While I like the way the stairway looks, I was thinking that I would like a darker wood, probably a maple or a cherry for trim, bookshelves and other furniture in the living room. The trim and cabinets in the kitchen and the hardwood floor in the dining area are the same color as the front steps. Would it be way out of place to have the darker wood in the living room while everything else on that level is a lighter colored wood? I'm definitely not up for a project to change everything to a darker wood, since what is there is really nice and really does look good.

Thoughts from people that may have a better mind than me when it comes to interior decorating?

Good Morning, Lodge!

I finally slept off the exhaustion of this weekend. I was running on adrenaline all day yesterday. The baseball game was fun especially being 1 of only 4 Cubs fans on the bus.

Have a good week!

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #110: Offseason Is Here, So Deal With It.

I wouldn't go changing the wood unless you change it all over. I think it would look out of place.

And personally, I like oak.

It's definitely a great time to do this project. Not just great pricing, but they're ready to do it NOW. These guys are hungry for work.

Having friends in the trades has lots of perks for sure. I always preface my bigger jobs with "Although we're friends, I want you to make what you deserve and I want to be sure I can come back to you if there's a problem with anything". It's a business deal. I also checked their licensing and insurance, which they provided as soon as I said I was going with them. Even if I didn't get "friend pricing", I know these guys have a personal interest and pride in the job. As I mentioned, the two brothers overseeing this project and doing most of the work themselves makes it comfortable for all involved. They know the access code to my garage and can use the bathrooms, kitchen or whatever they need while Mrs. Gonzo and I are at work. That peace of mind goes a long way in my book.
I will, however, hide my favorite fillet knife. This model is no longer made, and one of these guys has tried to permanently borrow it a couple of times after he lost his. ;)

I have to change it in the living room, because the previous owners started changing it over to the lighter colored oak and hadn't gotten to the living room yet, so in the living room there is tacky looking trim that looks like it is from the 70's.

I think the reason I wasn't thinking oak in my head is because my parents' house is all that same style and color of oak and I was thinking I'd go in a different direction.

Will it look ok to have oak trim/bookshelves/tv stand in a room where I'm planning on having black leather couches and a flat screen TV? For some reason it just seems like it clashes.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #110: Offseason Is Here, So Deal With It.

Granted, I'm in my mid 30s and still single, but...

I wouldn't think black leather couches would be out of place with oak and a flat screen. If I had a bigger/nicer place that's what I would have done with my living room (the oak flooring and the leather couches with the flat screen). Instead I cheated and put in a laminate oak floor in the kitchen.

Yeah, that's the problem with hiring friends, they know where all the good stuff is. ;)

I think the contrast would be nice. If you had a darker wood the whole room would seem too dark. The oak will keep the black furniture from being too overwhelming.

Unfortunately, I have yet to see any ladies supporting this great cause.

Yeah, about that... I'm not really seeing the connection either way.

Ok, that is probably what I would end up going with, except the room is carpet now, and as much as I love hardwood floors, I'm not spending the money on that if I get the house.

The other idea that I had, that I think would look great with the oak trim would be to use all of the light colored wood, not necessarily always oak, and get tan or brown leather couches and make it more of rustic/cabin look, which is something I have always liked.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #110: Offseason Is Here, So Deal With It.

Now, I would think that the tan or brown leather would clash with the wood more than the black.

;)

I've been pricing a shop for my business and my hobbies:D . 30 by 34, 12 foot walls, essentially a big open garage. 3 years ago I priced with a guy who had built an addition on my house. Good work, on time, under budget, did it, time and material, with a do not exceed, basically on a handshake. Worked out great. He priced the shop at 32,000. I politely declined:D . waited until last summer found another guy who did more than I originally wanted for 19,000. There are savings to be had.I talked to the guy in June, he started in July:eek:

hmm, ok. Good thing I have plenty of time to figure this out, if I get the house at all. If I do end up getting it, I should take pictures right away and post them and try to get some ideas of what it would look like

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #110: Offseason Is Here, So Deal With It.

As for whats wrong, perhaps you just need to have your Psoas' released again. ;)

eh, weekend class again this weekend, but after next tuesday, I should be fully certified in Myofascial Release Therapy. :D
Ok, but I can motivate myself to drive to you, so you come here.

Good Evening, Lodge!

I am totally messed up from the Cubs/Brewers game. I have been drunk since at least 5 pm. It is awesome!
See and people wonder why I adopted the cubbies as my "second favorite" baseball team.

Could've just said "typical wisconsinite" and left it at that.

Although "since 5pm" is a bit late for them. Normal might be "since noon".
And people wonder why I like to escape to Wisconsin on the weekends. :)

.

Nothing.
Excellent

Actually yeah, but all snobby bear. Two bottles of Chimay and then one growler that a regional operations guy bought as a way to butter me up. I told him I wasnt above taking a beer bribe.

Once you get the house, and you get the basics in there (kitchen stuff so that you can eat, bedroom furniture so that you can sleep, etc.), you've got more time than you think. At that point you can take your time and set the place up as you see fit. I bought my place 6 1/2 years ago and I'm still doing things with it. I've got to demo a bathroom, pour a new back porch and replace the cupboards, sink and countertop in my kitchen, likely all by the end of next year.

Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #110: Offseason Is Here, So Deal With It.

Afternoon, Lodge. Hope everyone's having a pleasant Sunday!

Went to a scholarship brunch at Auggie Tech today, and the only non-rabbit food we had (assuming you don't count the asparagus and mushroom egg bake) was a small slice of ham. When I hear "brunch" I think "eggs, toast, a few kinds of salad and fruit, and a big slab of meat." :D
That's what you get for going to Auggie Tech. :p
