Re: Religion: Catholics, Episcopalians, Atheists, All Are Welcome!

What do Catholics believe regarding the Pope's relationship wih God? Do they believe he speaks for God.? That he has a relationship with God that no other human has?

Jesus' (and by extension due to the Trinity, God's) representative on Earth. However, he is infallible only on matters of faith and morals. Even that's very questionable, if you look at some of the more colorful popes in the Church's history, but I digress.

IIRC, this is different from, say, the President of the LDS Church whom Mormons believe actually speaks to God/can speak for the Heavenly Father through revelations vetted by his First/Second Counselors and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles (their equivalent of Cardinals) after periods of intense prayer.

Representative? That could cover a lot of authoritative ground. He is infallible on matters relating to God's message and how it is to be interpreted? As to whether homosexuality or abortion are sins? Can you speculate whether most Catholics still believe in this infallibility?

Thanks for the response, btw.

The Pope is God's P.A.

If it relates to Church doctrine on faith and morals, yes.

As to whether homosexuality or abortion are sins?

Those are considered moral issues, so yes.

Devout Catholics do, but since the Church's membership in America shrinks with every passing year and I'm proud to count myself among those who walked away, I'm not the best person to ask. I'll bet if you attend Mass in Spain, Portugal, Poland, the Philippines, some little village in Ireland or Italy, or most of Latin America, you'll get a much different answer from those congregations.

Re: Religion: Catholics, Episcopalians, Atheists, All Are Welcome!

He's actually not always infallible on faith and morals. Only when he's speaking ex cathedra. The Pope can also be speaking out of his tuckus, which is what American Catholics claims whenever it's something they don't like. So, when the Pope says the butt secks is wrong liberal Catholics ignore him, and when he says we should relieve poverty Republicans claim he was singing gibberish in the shower.

White Catholics only believe in Magical Thinking when it aligns with their personal prejudices. POC Catholics still go all in.

Was there a Act or Holy Writ or something that established this infallibility? Be it hereby resolved . . . .

Shut up and google, burd.

Yes, there is a specific bull. The Pope was not infallible prior to July 18, 1870. He has been infallible for 149 years, 10 months and 13 days. The Brooklyn Bridge, the New York Subway System, the Chicago Cubs, and The Ohio State University are older than Papal Infallibility.

So bizarre to contemplate such silliness. And that people would buy it!

What is it about robes and pointy hats?

Pretty much my take on all of theology. They might as well just be arguing over whether Han shot first. “Hey, I made up a few rules for this mythical world I invented. Let’s argue about what other rules we might derive from those rules, and then when we get really bored, we’ll kill everyone who disagrees with us. Who’s in?”

And people say I hate capitalism.

Throughout history, religion has attempted to do two things for the gen pop:

1. Control their feral, apish instincts with rules (social order)
2. Explain that which cannot currently be explained or known, and assure them it's OK (opiate of the masses)

4.

“A girl was just a girl to you. They wasn’t nothin’ to you. But to me they was holy vessels. I was savin’ their souls. An’ here with all that responsibility on me I’d just get ’em frothin’ with the Holy Sperit, an’ then I’d take ’em out in the grass.”

“Maybe I should of been a preacher,’’ said Joad.

It's Pride month. Undoubtedly you will hear conservatives complaining we stole the rainbow from God. We actually consider that one of our greatest accomplishments.

Well, I’m convinced.

He was no Star-Burns.
