Re: Religion: Catholics, Episcopalians, Atheists, All Are Welcome!

Today in 325 AD. The Nicene Creed was written:

We believe in one God,
the Father almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
begotten from the Father before all ages,
God from God,
Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made;
of the same essence as the Father.
Through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation
he came down from heaven;
he became incarnate by the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary,
and was made human.
He was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered and was buried.
The third day he rose again, according to the Scriptures.
He ascended to heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again with glory
to judge the living and the dead.
His kingdom will never end.

And we believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord, the giver of life.
He proceeds from the Father and the Son,
and with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified.
He spoke through the prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church.
We affirm one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look forward to the resurrection of the dead,
and to life in the world to come. Amen.

I miss saying this on Sundays. Jen finishes her message and we rise to say this.

IMO, Nicea was a political convention at which they voted on a definition of nature of god, then took steps to ensure that their decision would survive as a belief system.

Not that there isn't a certain amount of elegance involved. And Turkey's beautiful.

I'm a Chalcedonian man myself.

The councils were all highly political conferences. They were battles between the regional centers of Christianity and its charismatic leaders over who would control it.

By the way, I remember it as "On the third day he rose again, in fulfillment of the Scriptures." That was how it was said in my Whore of Babylon church.

The Creed is a beautiful desiderata. I can't remember ever believing a word of it, even as a child, but it taught me to have an ethnologist's eye for my parents and helped me accept them even when I was a snotty teen, so bully for it.

That's what I recall mumbling at every Mass with the rest of the Catholic Borg, along with:

We believe in one God,
the Father almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is seen and unseen <strike>things visible and invisible</strike>

And in one Lord Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father <strike>before all ages</strike>,
God from God,
Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made;
<strike>of the same essence as</strike> one in being with the Father.
Through him all things were made.
For us men and for our salvation ("men" was omitted at more liberal parishes)
he came down from heaven;
he was conceived <strike>became incarnate</strike> by the power of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary,
and became man. <strike>was made human</strike>
He was crucified <strike>for us</strike> under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered, died, and was buried.
The third day he rose again, in fulfillment of the Scriptures.
He ascended to heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again with glory
to judge the living and the dead.
His kingdom will <strike>never</strike> have no end.

And we believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord, the giver of life.
He proceeds from the Father and the Son,
and with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified.
He spoke through the prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church.

He suffered,
Died,
And was buried.

One needs to emphasize the pause for effect:D ;)

One of the earlier layers beneath thousands of years of hearsay in various forms:

Goatherd #1: They say another guy was crucified over by Golgotha.

Goatherd #2: Not a fun way to go. They must bury them somewhere close by. Bring any wine?

They changed it 10+ years ago or something along with other wording. The few times a year I go I just stay silent during most of it.

Yup. I stopped going to Catholic church when I was 18 and only go if I visit my Dad for a holiday like Easter or Christmas. I’m totally lost in mass now.

I stopped at 13 but I still remember every word. It's like alphabetical order: hear it enough times and it's there forever no matter how arbitrary it is.

Wait wasn’t that from several months ago? I remember seeing it on the morning news.

What do Catholics believe regarding the Pope's relationship wih God? Do they believe he speaks for God.? That he has a relationship with God that no other human has?
