Quinnipiac Bobcats '11-'12 - Time to say bye?

Re: Quinnipiac Bobcats '11-'12 - Time to say bye?

Luke, congratulations on you marrage. Dorice and I wish you the best. Perhaps we can set up for a tailgate with our group from #113. Jim

Thanks Jim, the day was tremendous, the bride was beautiful and MarkEagle's dancing was top notch. I'll take the split with Bobby Mo. It looks like Clarkie has a serious upperhand on the job now that Hartzell had some issues. I still like this team a lot. Going 8 hours away to the middle of nowhere and playing in front of 700 people has trap game(s) written all over it. To split and outshoot your opponent in both games still inspires confidence. Now, they have some time to get healthy and ready for league play with three ivies to start (@ Princeton, @ Darmouth, @ Harvard).

Check out the blog this week for a more comprehensive look at the last weekend and the weeks to come.

Pretty cool seeing the national attention Quinnipiac is getting the latest polls this week. I know its early, but it is always fun to see the team ranked. Plus, maybe having an actual ranked number next to the team will help get some of the casual local and student fans out to more games once conference play starts.

We have a new article up, by Brian Farrell, on the season so far. Check it out here: http://www.theqbsn.com/2011/10/bobcats-back-in-top-20.html

We can only hope... I'd love nothing more than to see a full and rowdy student section at the Bank!

Very good read. I think the main difference between this year and the previous two is that we have so much more depth now. Four full lines that can get the job done and solid (thus far) defense top to bottom. The goalie situation might be our weakest point but I'm confident both Hartzell and Clarke will settle in and either will be able to get the job done. Right now the scales have to tip in Clarke's favor but Eric will come around as the season progresses.

They've been exciting to watch so far and I expect they will continue to gel and improve as we get into league play. The Peca-Zerevinski-Langlois line is going to be potent... I believe they will be better than the Bates-Nelson-Leitch line of a few years ago. The Jones-Jones-Goodman line is going to open a lot of eyes and will b e plain fun to watch.

Oh, one last thing... Glaicar gets his first career goal before the holiday break! You heard it here first! ;)

Mark, was there a spike in attendance when we got up to # 4 two years ago? Unfortunately (at least going back into the middle of the last decade) it never seemed like any mid season ranking QU achieved had much correlation to attendance.

Mark, was there a spike in attendance when we got up to # 4 two years ago? Unfortunately (at least going back into the middle of the last decade) it never seemed like any mid season ranking QU achieved had much correlation to attendance.

From what I can remember, there was definitely a lot more enthusiasm about the program as a whole on campus. Granted, I have always surrounded myself in a group that is very passionate about QU athletics, so that thought might be skewed. For an example, we got about 35-40 kids to take a shuttle to New Haven, then walk about 25 min to the Yale Bowl to watch a Friday night QU v Yale soccer game.

Anyway, I digress. Attendance for the first half of the season back in '09 was very well attended by students. Go back to quinnipiacbobcats.com and check out some of the student section photos from the early ECAC games that year (i.e. Clarkson, St. Lawrence, and Harvard). The place was packed for those game, with very passionate fans. Later that year, we got another real solid group of students to head over to Ingalls for the Yale game when we were #4. Enthusiasm for the program was definitely there.

Unfortunately, the team tanked after that game, and notably during January. There were a lot of home games in January, but most were with the students on break. Granted the Cornell and Yale games at the end of the year were well attended, the others once the team was playing poorly did not come close to matching those from the beginning of the season. Conversely, looking at last year, I never got the same feeling of enthusiasm from the students throughout the entire season, which was reflected by the attendance.

Seems obvious to say, but winning brings more support. It's that simple, and to a school that still hosts a decent population of students from non-college hockey "centered" areas, it is even more important. National rankings will always raise eyebrows and garner more attention and support, even if just appeals to the most casual of fans that only know about national rankings through watching college basketball and college football. I guess this idea will be put to test though in a couple of weeks against Clarkson (assuming we remain ranked through our first three ECAC games). Considering it will be the first Friday night game of the year, attendance should be solid. The only thing that worries me is that if they are not ranked, a school like Clarkson, that does not have the big name drawing power as others (especially to casual fans) might be a cause for a dip. Nonetheless, we will soon find out!

You expect me to remember?

I don't recall it being a spike but there was definitely more enthusiasm as Schvatz said. That quickly waned in January-February as we all know.

Getting students to the Bank is only half the battle. Keeping them there that seems to be just as hard. That mass exodus after the 2nd and all through the 3rd period is really disheartening. There's been times when I actually thought about grabbing kids as they walk by to ask them why they're leaving. Especially in close games, those final minutes of regulation are when we often need loud fan participation the most.

But as has already been said, today's students seem to be fair weather fans. If the teams doing good they come, if not the place is dead. Wonger and I try to incite the crowd but I don't think anyone pays any attention to us (well, at least not me... wonger is a celebrity now ;) ).

It's a shame we can't get the same student turnout like when the Bank first opened. Some of those crowds were just awesome.

Re: Quinnipiac Bobcats '11-'12 - Time to say bye?

Luke did it! His bride was gorgeous and he looked dapper as well. It was one of the nicest weddings I've been to and a great time was had by all. I wish them both only the best for a long, happy life together.

Go Q!

Luke my man..........congratulations!!!! Our team and thread are so dead I came over here to see what you guys were up to and heard the good news. That's awesome. Do you have any video to post of Mark dancing??!!!!!

Interesting start to the season for your boys. Atlantic Hockey redux to start the season?? I got a kick out of the ECAC writer saying you guys were in first place in Atlantic Hockey. On the other hand my Saints are in last place in the country at this point. What a rough start. Our "D" is non-existent and our goal tending has yet to put up a good game. I thought Wenninger would be a stud but so far a dud.

See you and Mark in November and again.....congratulations, that is wonderful to hear.

Haha. You're funny. I'm no celebrity, just a fan with an unhealthy addiction. BTW, any interest in taking some pics and writing up a sort of road trip travel guide for your trip to Hanover? I have a new contributer for the blog (Quinn57) who will be helping out with the Princeton game and I'll be at Harvard. Let me know Marky Mark.

Mike, thanks for the congrats! Miss your mug around the Bank! Hope to see for more than just the Saints game.

New Q&A with Brandon Wong now on the blog!

Re: Quinnipiac Bobcats '11-'12 - Time to say bye?

It's a 4:00 Saturday game... any of the Hoot gang planning on making the trip this year?

If we do we might be wearing brown paper bags so you might not recognize us.
Seriously it is way too early for the crew to plan. Usually Pat Bentley comes down for the trip and his son Bryan and Eric usually make the trip as they both live over in the Newburgh/Saugerties area of NY. Not sure about anyone else but I'll let you know.

Now that I remember. Nothing like the mass crowds that were outside the Bank over an hour before the game just to get let in the doors. I've got a video I took of the student section (I think before the first Yale game at the Bank... could be wrong) and you can see the countdown to game time and it's at 45:00 minutes and the entire student section is packed (rest of arena empty) and there was nonstop chanting echoing throughout the building. Talk about awesome.

I know the feeling!

Live updates from the rink aren't enough?

Seriously, if you give me an idea of what you'd like to see I'll try and accomodate you. Not sure my journalistic skills are that great however.

If we do we might be wearing brown paper bags so you might not recognize us.
I'll just look for that new Bruins championship hat! ;)

Check out this video over at NHL.com. It's about former NHL great Pat LaFontaine coaching a junior team that recently played in the East Coast College Cup championship game held at the Bank. Some "free" exposure for QU and the Bank... and a pretty interesting video, too!

I don't know about the hat, but my neighbor came over with a gorgeous Patrice Bergeron Jersey that looked authentic in every detail. Had Reebok tags on it, said made in Canada on it, had all the Bruins logo's, numbers, name plus a Stanley Cup patch. I asked him how much figuring it would be several hundred dollars. Turns out it was a Chinese knock off for $36.00!!!!! If you want an NHL jersey check it out. They even have Whalers Jerseys. I'm thinking Luke will get at least a couple of Black Hawks jerseys as at this price you can't go wrong.

Re: Quinnipiac Bobcats '11-'12 - Time to say bye?

Congratulations to Eric Lampe for his record breaking night for Las Vegas. Four goals, Six points, both single game Wrangler franchise records! Atta boy Eric. Box

Also, congrats to Brandon Wong getting off the shnide and potting a goal and two assists in Greenville's win over Florida. Box

Re: Quinnipiac Bobcats '11-'12 - Time to say bye?

Wonger, good post on Eric Lampe from your blog. He was my favorite QU player over the years. You never knew what would happen when he was on the ice-short handed goals, breakaways, insane speed...I thought he might do well, and get to the AHL or NHL? We were going to see him play in Florida, when he was with the Everblades, but he left for Vegas. This may require a road trip to Vegas. Good luck to QU on Tuesday.
