PrimeLink Shootout

Re: PrimeLink Shootout

This format was supposed to help the strength of the tournament. I understand Stout was strong last year, and was supposed to be a contender, but maybe it should be brought back the way it used to be and keep it more local. Skidmore? Utica? Bowdin? Elmira? Thanksgiving weekend and travel from the west may be too much this early in the season for the western team.

I agree with keeping this first tournament of the year as a regional format. It's opening weekend with no post-season bearings. Let's keep it local and with regional rivals.

Especially seeing how next year we are getting another mid-tier western team...WHO HAS ALREADY PLAYED IN THE PRIMELINK...but they couldn't *cough cough* wouldn't get Adrian....

Re: PrimeLink Shootout

I agree not trying to make excueses. You can clearley see by the score that something is not right. Plus the fact that we are not use to that big style rink they have. All togehter just made it not a good night for us Stout fans. You can find me at the bar trying to forget this game.

Re: PrimeLink Shootout

Don't be too frustrated Stout fans. The stars were aligned just right last season. Maybe go back to expecting mediocrity to avoid the heartache.

Re: PrimeLink Shootout

Final 3-1 Plattsburgh over Middlebury. Didn't see it anywhere so here it is. Good game!

Re: PrimeLink Shootout

The bus ride was just to much for the Blue Devils. Combine that with a large ice surface and a very fast Cadet skating team and it spelled trouble for Stout. I certainly do not think Norwich is that much better than Stout. Stout just caught the Cadets on a night that they could do no wrong.

Re: PrimeLink Shootout

Last year in Lake Placid we had the same problem facing Gustavus. Our guys are not used to playing on the bigger sized rinks and playing faster teams kills us.

I saw the same thing a couple years ago, when Stout really struggled against Marian on their big sheet.

Re: PrimeLink Shootout

I think it is clear that Norwich has a team built for a larger ice surface and Stout has a big team built for more cramped quarters. Add the bus trip into the mix and you have a recipe for what we saw. It will be interesting to to see Mid and Stout play tomorrow, and (of course) the renewal of the alway interesting NU/PSU series.

I don't think that Norwich is anywhere near 8 goals better than Stout, but I think they are better. The new guys are impressive.

Re: PrimeLink Shootout

Geez did Stout really bus in today and pick up travel meals at a gas station? No wonder they got embarassed. What's up for tomorrow? Going to hitchhike to the arena after getting a pregame can down at the soup kitchen? Thats just awful preparation.

I don't want to be mean but geez. From what I watched online it was clear McShane cleary outcoached the Stout guy. Stout didnt even look they have a system but that could just be because they had no time or space and werent ready for the storm the Cadets were going to unleash. It looked like they were playing pond hockey. They need to rebound quick or it could be ugly against Middlebury.

Just my two sense.

All three coaches do not want to play a regional team, but would rather use it as a measurment against out of region teams. Why play a team you are going to see again? Each school has their own tournament to do that in.

Re: PrimeLink Shootout

Plattsburgh/Middlebury
Middlebury came out very strong and staked with Plattsburgh for about half the game. Mid-way thru the second period Plattsburgh started to take control, had the better of the play, and limited Middlebury's scoring chances. Good coaching on Plattsburgh part to make a few minor adjustments early in the game and keep pouring it on until the Panthers were worn down. Very impressed by the speed of Plattsburgh. Dan Sliasis GMG in which he battered the puck in the net was a great play.

Norwich/Stout
I thought the two early goals by Kyle Thomas were the key in the game to get a young Norwich team going and give them confidence. Just my take but Norwich seemed to have slightly more debth then Stout and Stout didn't seem to match up well with the Thomas/Siegel line. At times during the game this line for Norwich seem to take control of the game and had a lot of scoring chances. Both teams first lines seem to cancel out early. It was also much easier for Ryan Klingensmith to play after the early two goal lead.

Re: PrimeLink Shootout

beating a dead horse here... Stout is built to create chaos. They are big and tough. That doesn't work against the top end teams in the east which are built with hockey smarts and speed. I think this was a case of two teams with different styles and it really showed who plays their style better. Stout is not the best of the west this year. Obviously, I'm not sure that they even belong in the top 15, it's about time we don't have 5 teams from one conference in the rankings.

Re: PrimeLink Shootout

Shots in the Norwich/Stout game were 53-14?!

While Stout is clearly down from the previous two seasons, I must admit they are still probably one of the better teams in the west. Hopefully they can pull it together and save some face for themselves and the rest of their region today against Middlebury.

As for the Primelink returning to an all eastern tournament, I gotta think the players and coaches all really enjoy playing teams they never get to see with relatively low consequences. I know I would/did. It just seems as if the three western teams that have participated (St. Johns, St. Thomas, and Stout) have traveled out a season or two after they were truly competing at an elite national level. St. John's was super tough from about '03 to '05 when they had Adam Hanna in goal and were receiving Pool C NCAA bids, St. Thomas was the national runner up in '05, and now Stout.

I bet a long bus ride wouldn't faze Adrian if they were given an opportunity to play any of those three schools...

Re: PrimeLink Shootout

Please, please let's get some decent camera work for today's championship game!!! I would guesstimate that the puck, or the player with the puck, was visible on screen about half the time yesterday. If it's too tough to follow the play close up, then please just back up and show the whole ice sheet!
