Preseason Poll: 2010-2011

Re: Preseason Poll: 2010-2011

If Genoway's healthy, he's the top returning d-man no questions asked. Those three HE guys (Kessel, Warsofsky, Dumoulin) might very well be the three battling for the second spot. They're all very good in their own zone (not sure where this "Kessel isn't a good two-way defender" nonsense is coming from). I think Kessel and Warsofsky are better offensively, though, so I'd give them the slight edge over Dumoulin. It'll be interesting to see if Dumoulin jumps up more this season. He should have more chances to.

It was very impressive to watch those three BC freshmen develop throughout the season. It takes longer for d-men to adjust to the college game than it does for forwards, and they were thrown right into the fire and came away with a few championships. Nice to see USA hockey take notice, as all three survived the first cut at WJC summer camp (interesting to note that both Warsofsky and Kessel played in the tournament).

You might want to consider Matt Donovan of DU as an up and coming D-man. He has a Gold Medal from last year's WJC and made the WCHA All Rookie team. We are glad his coming back to Denver and didn't succumb to the Islanders enticements.

Did I mention, he's from hockey country Edmond, Oklahoma?

Donovan was a lot of fun to watch at the WJC last year. Along with Wrenn, Phillips and co, it looks like Denver returns a solid d corps top to bottom.

My picks. I haven't sifted through all available data, but I feel this list is quite solid. I'm curious what people think about this list. Please respond.

1. BC

2. Miami U

3. Michigan

4. North Dakota

5. Maine

6. St. Cloud

7. Denver

8. New Hampshire

9. Michigan State

10. Wisconsin

Short list of notable falls-Wisconsin (Haven't checked their incoming class though :( ) , Cornell, Yale

Short list of notable climbers-Boston U, OSU (Had Dalpe and Bishop stayed they could have hoped for top 10), Notre Dame(though probably not top 20, its possible. They received 3 of the top 10 league leaders in scoring from the USHL this past year)

I know most would put ND above Michigan and Miami, but look at what Michigan did last year from start to finish. They lost Kampfer and Summers, but they return with a phenomenal senior class. They also pulled top-notch froshes in to replace departures. Miami returns the nation's #1 defense in full. Loverde, who owns his zone, was absent from all of last year's playoffs. The natural Palmer loss and the early flight of Wingels definitely hurt, however the team still has widespread offensive talent. They pulled in two solid freshman to reload who may bear significant load or may not due to the already established depth. I feel Miami has the most potential to surprise. They could finish 10th-ish or they could run away with 2 championships.

Oh, and BC, yeah I have some input on where you can put your two 1st round draft picks but I'll decline atm. 7-1 (Sure a few of those were due to Miami freaking out and breaking down once significantly behind) and 5-0 to Wisconsin in the Championship. Score 7 goals on the nations #1 defense and goaltending tandem? Hold the electrifying offense of Wisconsin scoreless??? Why don't you play to your full potential all year this year and just let everyone hate you.

Thats 3 CCHA 3 East 4 West in the top 10.

Oh, and congrats BC, you guys owned in the tourney. :)

Don't know anyone that would put Notre Dame above Miami. And Michigan st. is no where near a top 10 team. Maine is a borderline top 10 teams. Top 4 is ok, but would have SCSU at 5 atleast. Denver needs to prove they are a top 10 team with as much as they lost. I would have UNH at 6. Also your analysis of Miami is a little off. Their two freshmen are not expected to produce much at all if any. They are more or less gap fillers. They lost two offensive weapons but, IMO, gain two in sophmores McKenzie and Smith who had solid freshman campaigns last year. They are still extremely deep on offense and return the nations top two goaltenders. Miami ran away with the conference last year and return 17 of 20 starters from last year, so they are the favorites again. Not sure who Miami will surprise its pretty well known what they have and if they surprise anyone that person has been in a cave for the last 5 years......

My list (which is meaningless yet fun)

1. BC
2. Miami
3. North Dakota
4. St. Cloud
5. Michigan
6. UNH
7. Minnesota-Duluth
8. Yale
9. Boston
10. Denver

I have my thoughts on the non-WCHA side, but if I'm just gonna score you for that, I think you're taking away from the top teams and giving too much credit to some of the depth. NoDak is a top 2 team, hands down, interchangeable with BC. SCSU is probably either 3-5, but I can't gripe with a 6 spot, though if I were to put another team ahead of them it certainly wouldn't be Maine. Denver is NOT the 7th ranked team going in; lost way too much, and while they could finish there, or even higher, they've got too many question marks to answer first. Wisconsin also shouldn't have made the top 10, and as painful as it is for me to say this, Duluth is a top 10 team and should take one of their spots.

Wait... did a WCHA fan just say another conference's follower put TOO MANY WCHA teams in the top 10? What's next.... St. Cloud wins an NCAA game?!?

I agree with you for the most part. Duluth is going to compete with SCSU and UND for the MacNaughton this season, and should be a top-10 team. I'd also put SCSU above Maine. I think Denver will be a top-10 team at the end of the year, but shouldn't be a top-10 preseason team based on what they lost. I'd add Miami to the "interchangeable" list for top 3.
