POTUS 45.0: It was the best of times. It was the worst of times.

Re: POTUS 45.0: It was the best of times. It was the worst of times.

The national polls were more accurate than people give them credit for. They predicted a Hillary win by 3-4 points, and she won by about 2.5.

Even the state polls generally fell within the margin of error. They just all missed in the same direction.

I think the problem was that the 2.5 percentage points meant so much. If the election was 70-30 obviously it would have meant a lot less. To give Nate Cohn credit, he said in the buildup that if one state flipped the others were significantly more likely to flip as well and this was exactly what happened.

Re: POTUS 45.0: It was the best of times. It was the worst of times.

You're right that there is some variability and MOE. But not enough to prevent us from defining him as the least popular president to take the oath. And while we're there, let's just mention that sociopaths do not think of oaths the way you and I do. To Trump, it's no more than a performance.

Yeah, we're certainly in uncharted waters. The media needs to do its best to stick with facts and things that are important. So far they have let Trump manipulate them and have failed miserably.

One reason is the right's media is just as comfortable with lying as Trump. Trump is really doing nothing different from Breitbart and Info Wars or even Fox. He's just doing it with no veil. But the right has acted for 30 years as if any fact that conflicts with their narrative is ipso facto false. Trump is the natural consequence.

They're not the only ones with that belief, assuming they are; just take a look at about 80% of the posts in reply to me on here. ;) And BTW, Infowars does offer the microphone to those who disagree. You might unexpectedly end up in a debate, but they aren't going to censor you. Take a look at their videos from even within the last 48 hours.

And the left is always telling the truth? I've read a million bogus things about guns and I'm sure there are plenty of other examples. You might have missed it but someone on the left(I think it was CNN) falsely reported Trump removed a bust of MLK from the oval office.

The MLK thing has been retracted. Something the right NEVER DOES.

As for Guns, the right insists Sandy Hook never happened. So, no matter what "left" thing you come up with I just Trumped it. You got nothing.

It was a Time magazine journalist, and then later had to tweet a retraction stating someone was in the way after he was proved false. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4c5aDfPruXY

It was a pool reporter, and it was retracted quickly thereafter.

Re: POTUS 45.0: It was the best of times. It was the worst of times.

Yesterday Sean Spicer took a hit out of Joseph Goebbels playbook. On Nov. 10, 1938, following Kristallnacht, Joseph Goebbels called in the press and said the following: "all the accounts that have come to your ears about alleged looting and destruction of Jewish property are a stinking lie (sind erstunken und erlogen). Not a hair of a Jew was disturbed (den Juden ist kein Haar gekruemmt worden).*" He then took no questions. Sound similar? These clowns are in their own reality.

Your response is telling in that you don't even dispute the right media pursues an overt strategy of lying.

Breitbart and InfoWars are actually not a very fair comparison, because they're joke outlets like the National Enquirer or the Weekly World News -- the joke being on their consumers who are milked like rubes on the Midway. We have a daily reminder right here how effectively they can appeal to a rube's vanity and then fleece him. Though they do have relevancy now in that they have deep contacts within the Trump and Tea Party contingents.

But Fox was literally chartered to put out lies because the truth was causing too much trouble for Republicans. The creators were Nixon officials who wished they could have stopped the national media from reporting on Watergate. The Plan was to create an alternate reality that conservatives would enjoy because it ratified all their beliefs, and which would be far preferable to facts because it would never challenge their preconceptions. They created a TV network that was like a 19th century party newspaper.

Where WaPo and the NYT leaned toward a leftwards interpretation of information by reporting facts because their audience respected the science norm of fitting theory to fact, Fox and then the Hate Radio copy cats pursued a rightwards interpretation of information by reporting on the Revealed Truth of its prophets -- Reagan, Rush, O'Reilly, Hannity, Beck. They juxtaposed a conservative religious mentality to the liberal scientific method. Their users, steeped in that mindset from their fathers and pastors, were naturally attracted to "divine command" structures of authority.

It was so telling the right would shriek at the left's supposed blind allegiance to its leaders. They were not merely wrong but WILDLY wrong. The left does nothing but question and criticize its leaders, usually tearing them down. The right simply can't wrap their minds around that way of thought, so alien to their method of treating information as revelatory.

I never expected Trump to release his tax returns but I guess now its official.

IMO, the media needs to make an issue of this, much like Trump did with th whole birther thing. Trump obviously dislikes this issue, so make it so that's the only thing he hears. If there are any press conferences in the future, keep hammering Spicer and put him on the defensive. Normally I'm not a fan of stooping to someone else's level, but with Trump if you attack his ego then he'll break.

It's a really good time for a leak.

The media will fixate on the tax return and ignore what tD is REALLY doing to transform (or pick another word) Washington.

There is a strategy when the auditors/IG show up to give them an easy cookie to find and since they found something minor they won't dig around too deeply and make your life difficult.

The fact that he won't release them tells me they are hiding something extremely embarrassing. Either he's done illegal things and he's going to shut down the investigation, or, more likely, he's bankrupt.

Re: POTUS 45.0: It was the best of times. It was the worst of times.

The Donald isn't going to do crap on his own, with the exception of the non-zero chance of starting WWIII and a better than 50/50 shot of starting a trade war. The real dangerous stuff is what's going to come out of Congress that he'll rubber stamp.

I cannot believe anybody as smart as you thinks this is a real thing.

Trump isn't going to change anything about Washington. He's too lazy and inept, and he doesn't really want to. That was just a slogan to win an election.

Trump is simply a kleptocrat like Putin. That is hardly a new or fresh strategy -- it's been SOP among Senators and House members throughout our history. Trump's single innovation is he is going to steal from the White House, and do so without even bothering to hide it. He will get on TV and say "black is white" and Republican news outlets will report that "black is white," and posters on the Cafe will say things like "I can't believe the media is so fixated on what Trump is saying."

A trade war has the potential to put me out of work.

Re: POTUS 45.0: It was the best of times. It was the worst of times.

I don't need to see Trump's tax returns to know he's a phony billionaire whose wealth is tied up in junk foreign debt, and that he pays little to no income taxes. The 1995 return that Maples leaked is all the proof we need.

On a side note, best sign I saw on TV yesterday - "You're so vain, you probably think this march is about you." :D
