Playoff Results 2021

Congrats to Robert Morris on getting more shots against NU , than either BC or Providence got in their games, and matching the goal total of two of the combined Hockey East teams.

If you want to pick at that scab Clarkson only "beat" Ohio State to advance in the tournament by a very bad interference call disallowing what would have probably been our winning goal!

(I was there, sitting more-or-less on that blue line and happened to be looking right at the Buckeye player who got the penalty. If she doesn't interfere, the Clarkson defender might well have been able to move into position to block the shot. It was a good call.)

Clarkson needs to hold a few seminars on how to beat the WCHA in the NCAA tournament.

You are right, the rest of your conference has struggled to win even 15% of their tourney games vs the WCHA. But no need for a seminar, Clarkson's secret is easy, just sell your souls and fill up your roster with nothing but Canadians.

We're just going to have to agree to disagree.

Badger men's radio guy, and father of UW forward Maddie Posick, says the Badger game is the late game Thursday. I don't think NCAA has posted that yet.

I thought so, too -- I was sitting club level above the goal. In any case, the whistle came before the puck got to the net, so the play was dead by the time the puck went in. OSU did well, but Giguère made a play. It was her year.

It would make sense. No. 1 seed typically gets the early semi, so it doesn't have to sit and wait if the other game goes OT. Plus, NU was the first game of the quarters.

I was hoping it would be the other way, though I figured not. #1 Wisconsin vs #4 Minnesota women volleyball at 7 PM.

On the other hand, being on ESPNU is better than being on ESPN3. You can watch one and record the other.

I really need to focus on things other than hockey but it’s been really nice watching these four games, and reading the commentary here. Some quick takeaways about the tourney /college hockey generally:
1- I don’t know what it would take to get rid of the minimizing flights rule but that is the number 1 thing I’d fight for for women’s college hockey. It’s been great watching east west matchups.
2- Fight with the NCAA to get them to allow LaBahn to host a Frozen Four. I just hear people rave about watching games in that building. I think it would be pretty special for them to host.
3- Keep the quarterfinals at 4 different times. In years past I feel like I get to watch 1.5 games at most. This has been nice.
4- Syracuse seems like the only school left that provides a quality, free stream. Figure something out with the streaming, such that fans can drop in on a team and buy 1 game at a normal price here and there. Tony mentioned Flo Sports and 30$ a month. I just know there has to be a better way. The WCHA is almost doing a disservice to itself, especially to its teams that don’t get on Big Ten Network plus. Like UMD.
5- Consider creating a media award to recognize the contribution of a deserving media person each year. My understanding is most sports have this; it’s not clear to me that women’s hockey does.

sorry if this is too off topic. Just a brain dump.

Can’t wait for Thursday. :-)

I'll figure a way to get my PC next to the TV and stream one and TV the other. I'm as big a UW volleyball fan as I am a UW hockey fan. The hockey game is "bigger" but there are (COVID) circumstances that make the VB match quite big on its own.

I agree. I think that until we can get that, expansion of the tourney that some want will just give us more conference tourney rewinds.

I understand that there are multiple hurdles, but the size of the facility is definitely one (two)? Capacity is rather low. I would hope that when Ridder hosts in 2025, that would be the last time if fits in there, and Ridder's capacity is ~ 1K more. Plus, there is very little room for media. The DECC had that problem even more, but at least there were places outside the press box where they could be parked. I don't know where they'd go at LaBahn without reducing capacity even more. LaBahn has nice ambience and atmosphere, but the seating could have used an upgrade.

Agreed.

There was some type of recognition at one point. I remember Brian Schulz for his work producing content like this:

I guess it was The Joe Burke Award, which is more than just media.

Yes, but the VB game will be rematched on Sunday, which makes it less do-or-die.

This will be the first match for UW since a COVID break wiped out two weekends for them and then a third weekend because of COVID at Northwestern (Big Ten volleyball is having a BAD time with COVID all over). It is almost certain that not all UW players will be back and available, but between Thursday and Sunday, the Big Ten championship and #1 seed for NCAA tournament are likely on the line.

As I said, I'm as big a UW VB fan as I am hockey. And women's VB is kind of like hockey in that a very few teams have ever won the national championship, and UW is on the outside looking in for VB (Minnesota, too, BTW; both teams were Final Four last year, and both returned much of their lineups). Before COVID, 2020 was going to be UW's year to 'join the club'.
