Playoff Results 2021

4- Syracuse seems like the only school left that provides a quality, free stream. Figure something out with the streaming, such that fans can drop in on a team and buy 1 game at a normal price here and there. Tony mentioned Flo Sports and 30$ a month. I just know there has to be a better way. The WCHA is almost doing a disservice to itself, especially to its teams that don’t get on Big Ten Network plus. Like UMD.
I know I'm biased but BC has, bar none, THE best college hockey production quality in the country. There's at least 3 camera angles for every replay, the commentators (either Luis Sanchez or the new guy) really put in the effort to be great and knowledgeable about both teams, the live camera angle is excellent, the graphics overlays are high quality and they've got all the info you need... It's just a truly professional, high-quality production. We used to be the worst in the country back in my day. Incredible the turnaround.

As for price -- I give Hockey East a lot of crap but they nailed it this year. More than half of BC's games were on TV this year. The women's team!! And anyone outside the NESN coverage area got a free stream. Games not on NESN were streamed free everywhere. This was league-wide. I don't think I'd change a thing with how Hockey East did it this season.

And they have much of it archived. I went back and watched some Northeastern, and Providence, as well as some of the tournament live.

I really need to focus on things other than hockey but it’s been really nice watching these four games, and reading the commentary here. Some quick takeaways about the tourney /college hockey generally:
1- I don’t know what it would take to get rid of the minimizing flights rule but that is the number 1 thing I’d fight for for women’s college hockey. It’s been great watching east west matchups.
2- Fight with the NCAA to get them to allow LaBahn to host a Frozen Four. I just hear people rave about watching games in that building. I think it would be pretty special for them to host.
3- Keep the quarterfinals at 4 different times. In years past I feel like I get to watch 1.5 games at most. This has been nice.

5- Consider creating a media award to recognize the contribution of a deserving media person each year. My understanding is most sports have this; it’s not clear to me that women’s hockey does.

sorry if this is too off topic. Just a brain dump.

Can’t wait for Thursday. :-)

As the furthest west of anyone, La Bahn and Ridder are the easiest to get to for me. Everyone on Twitter said La Bahn is not great for a national tournament though.

I agree with the QF and the streaming, though I don't mind paying $5 a month for ESPN+. I also subscribe to Paramount+ which gives a number of WHEA games too.

FLO is the worst. I basically only pay to watch Clarkson games on FLO and even then sometimes just do radio. NEWHA still streams free I think.

Source: I watch about 100 games a season lol.

I paid for Flo this season only because it was the only way to watch some of our away games and I knew we had a special team again this season. But for those of you who never watch one of our home games on BTN+ I can say with all certainty and shamefully Ohio State's streaming is the worst in the country. I'll be ecstatic if come next season we can be at the games in person so I never have to watch a home game streamed again!

FWIW, Tony has it right that Hockey East has finally gotten it right with streaming and broadcasting their games....my beef is that the announcers should realize that many more people watch the games now, so they should learn the opposing team players and stats to some extent! I’ll assume that they wouldn’t mind being “found” for a regional or national gig while working their school’s broadcast so they should up their game....just my pet peeve!
Not sure if you guys saw Hilary Knights tweet about how poor all the broadcasts were!

Sounds like Hockey East nailed it on the streaming. Good for them.

forgot about the media space issue at LaBahn. Bummer. Maybe one day (in next 20 years) I will just have to make a road trip there for reg season game.

appreciate the perspectives,all.

I think the main thing with the streaming is to make it possible for an out of conference person to drop in on your league, with a one game purchase. Not a subscription you have to remember to cancel or a crazy price. And free streams are great but I know that is asking a lot and can understand why a school wouldn’t do that....although it’s something the NW has always done and seems to be working for them.

I'm sure they could make something work for the media @ Labahn, Haase was less than impressed with the media set-up in Erie.

So let's talk about the results so far. I would say that despite the seed Wisconsin is the favorite based on what I have seen so far. Providence and BC definitely did not belong in the final 8.
Both MN and Penn State would consistently beat both those teams. I think that based on what I have seen on streaming so far two of the top four in the nation are sitting at home.
Duluth is the wildcard I think they belong I don't think they are as strong as OSU,WISC, or U of M. The gophers main problem is though they have top end talent up front.
They haven't had a top flight goalie since Noora. Vetter Will help next year

Zamboni - yes, you are correct. The bracket you described would have made sense.

On strength of their win over NU, BC had an argument to be their too, even though yesterday was so lopsided. Could have gone 4 WCHA teams plus 2 Hockey East and 1 and 1 too.

Big take away for me is that pairwise is never going to allow for 4 WCHA teams likely, so getting the seeding sorted out and getting rid of the minimizing flights thing would at least be a start.

Folks need to seriously set aside biases about CHA as well. Quit comparing league to league and consider individual teams.

UMD is a wildcard like you said. I think someone in vics bracket had them in the final. We will see how they look against NU.

I am more than happy to set aside any bias. However, I need a reason. RMU did ok at times against NU, however, watching NU quite a lot this season, mid level Hockey East teams performed way better against NU than RMU. RMUs goalie was fantastic though. Hopefully Penn State (and additional CHA teams) will prove that the conference deserves a lot more respect than they are getting. Penn State certainly appears to be on the upswing. But it sure didn't help losing their best recruit for next year to the Gophers.

The battle of the mightiest in HE against arguably the weakest of the weak top 4 in the WCHA should be the more intriguing game. Yuckeyes and Sinners? Seen that movie a few times this year and you could be looking at a repeat of the WHCA tourney championchip with possibly a different result.

Fully agree on MN was a big miss and needed to be at the tournament. Not sure how you think Penn State belongs though. They didn't play anyone this year to validate their winning record. The only rep from the CHA got pounded 5 to1 and was out shot 46 to 21. No better than BC or Providence IMO. I'm sure St. Cloud could have a record just as good as Penn State if they played in the CHA.

That’s me having them beating NU and facing OSU in the final. And, after watching the Duluth/Colgate game, I think it’s likely the Gophers would’ve gotten beat by Colgate. I just don’t think MN’s goaltending would have held up the way Soderberg did for Duluth. Soderberg had the one bad game in the WCHA tournament but the Gophers goaltending - according to the Gopher fans - was consistently struggling the last half of the season.

Putting Penn State in the same category as the Gophers or any of the top 4 of the WCHA, is quite funny. You are joking around right?

If Penn State was a top 4 team, even a top 10 team, they wouldn't have lost to a team that maybe wasn't even in the top 30. Maybe next year.

I do agree the Gophers are a better team than BC and Providence. However, I also think they would have been one and done, as was BC and Providence - purely based on having a lower seed and having to play Wisc or OS in their first game. I think those two teams are in the Gopher players heads. I think the Gophers weakness is their D core - they didn't look very good. However, it is hard to look good when consistently playing top 5 teams.
