Plattsburgh State Hockey 2014-15 - Bob's 26th work in progress ...

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2014-15 - Bob's 26th work in progress ...

Wis-Stevens Point; Amherst; Norwich may have a say in this!! If it should be Norwich, I like their changes when looking at the Cadets post season NCAA record with the Cardinals since Coach McShane took over in the 1995-1996 season. :)
1997 (3-3 Tie ; 5-2 Cadets win ¼ finals); 1999 (4-4 Tie; 3-2 Cadets win ¼ finals); 2010 (3-2 Cadets win semi-final @ LP); 2011 (3-2 OT Cadets win ¼ final)

Who??? :p

Since there will not be a fan bus, if there are any fans going, maybe they could carpool???? It doesn't seem like any of the usual road fans are going, though.

Cardinals taking on Bantams - {Article courtesy of the Plattsburgh Press-Republican 3/21/2015}

After last week’s controversy surrounding the Plattsburgh State men’s hockey team losing its home game in the NCAA quarterfinals, coach Bob Emery is less concerned with where the Cardinals are playing than with when.

Due to a slight change in the NCAA Division III men’s hockey tournament format, a first-round bye meant Plattsburgh had last weekend off. The third-ranked Cardinals (20-5-2) haven’t played since March 7 and have played just two games in the last month.
“If I had my choice not to have a bye, I would’ve rather played last weekend,” Emery said. “No matter what, if you get the bye, you’re gonna be rusty. So if you’re going to have to go on the road, well hey, give us one first-round game so we’re not rusty.

“That’s my biggest fear going into the weekend is we haven’t played in a long time.”

Plattsburgh will visit Trinity tonight for a quarterfinal game, and the winner will advance to next weekend’s semifinals in Minneapolis, Minn.

Tonight’s game was originally slated to be at Stafford Ice Arena but was moved when the Plattsburgh women earned the right to host their national championship game, also scheduled for tonight.

“It’s a learning process, I hope, for everyone involved,” Emery said. “It’s a shame for our players. I feel for our players that we didn’t get that opportunity to play at home.”

Senior forward Alex Brenton noted the Cardinals are undefeated in road games this season. Trinity hasn’t lost often at the Koeppel Community Sports Center (10-2-1), but its away record is even better (12-1).

The seventh-ranked Bantams (22-3-1), who lost just one NESCAC game in the regular season, were surprised by Tufts in the conference quarterfinals. They received an at-large NCAA bid and handled Nichols 4-2 in the first round.

A trio of high-scoring forwards powers Trinity’s offense, led by Ryan Cole. The sophomore has tallied a team-high 15 goals and 36 points and ranks 12th in Division III with a 1.38 points-per-game average. He has at least one point in his last seven games.

“I think you gotta respect certain players in the game more than others, and I think he’s one of those guys you gotta respect a little more,” Emery said.

Michael Hawkrigg, a junior, boasts a 14-19-33 scoring line, and senior Jackson Brewer leads the team in assists (24) and has totaled 31 points.

Plattsburgh’s Michael Radisa said the Cardinals will need to limit their turnovers, and defensive-zone coverage will be crucial.

“There’s a couple skilled forwards in Trinity, and if you give them time and space, then they’re going to hurt you and the puck is going to be in the net,” Radisa said.

Trinity goalie Nathaniel Heilbron has posted a 17-3-1 record. The junior boasts a 1.95 goals-against average and a .932 save percentage.

Plattsburgh faces an intriguing dilemma in net. Brady Rouleau has started the last 10 games and turned in a 17-save performance in the SUNYAC title game. But Spencer Finney, who is (8-0-1), returned from an injury in time to dress as a backup in that contest and has been practicing. Emery said early this week that Finney would be “in the equation” when tonight’s starter was chosen. The coach typically names the starter on game day.

Plattsburgh beat Brockport and Oswego in the SUNYAC tournament to earn its first NCAA berth since 2012. Brenton and four other seniors haven’t been to the Division III tournament since they were freshmen.

“It’s definitely a nice treat to get there,” Brenton said. “But we as a team, freshmen up to seniors, we’ve all worked hard. We all deserve this.

“So it’s going to be a fun ride, for sure.”

If RIT's women were still D3 the ECAC West wouldn't be such a cupcake of a conference after Plattsburgh and Elmira.

I like cupcakes :D

Cardinals fall in NCAA quarterfinal - {Article courtesy of the Plattsburgh Press-Republican 3/22/2015}

Jackson Brewer said he was too tired to be nervous when he was rewarded a penalty shot — the first of the Trinity senior’s career — late in Saturday’s first period.

He deked Plattsburgh goalie Brady Rouleau and put the puck stick-side for a 1-0 lead. The goal wasn’t necessarily the dagger, but it gave the Bantams some early momentum, and they went on to a 5-1 win in an NCAA men’s hockey quarterfinal at Koeppel Community Sports Center.

“Right away, I knew what I was going to do,” Brewer said of the penalty shot that came after an interference call on a breakaway. “It felt nice to get that first goal for the team because that can set the tempo for the whole game.”
No. 7 Trinity (23-3-1) advanced to the Division III final four, ending Plattsburgh’s season in the process.

The third-ranked Cardinals (20-6-2) got back to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2012, but the hardest part might have been the two weeks between earning the bid and playing their quarterfinal. The game was moved from Plattsburgh to Hartford because of a scheduling conflict.

“Our guys have been through a devastating two weeks,” Plattsburgh coach Bob Emery said. “They were given something and taken it away. It was real hard for them.
“It was a cloud hanging over our head. And I think the leadership of the team did a great job getting through it. But when you don’t play, you get rusty.”

Plattsburgh held a 27-21 lead in shots on goal by the end of the second, but still had not been able to solve Trinity goalie Nathaniel Heilbron. Rouleau made a terrific glove save while off-balance with just over six minutes to go in the period to keep the Bantams to one goal.

But 2:45 into the third, Elie Vered made it 2-0.

Plattsburgh captain Brandon Beadow said the Cardinals stayed upbeat after the first goal and felt like they were still in it after the second.

Trinity took control in a 1:09 span in the middle of the third period, however.

Tim Shea took a nice feed from Connor Coveney and put the puck in the open left side of the net at 10:56. Then Brewer scored on a long shot from the left circle for a 4-0 advantage.

“I think it was probably the third goal (that permanently tilted the momentum),” Beadow said. “I know we talk about all the time, the third goal kinda takes the wind out of your sails. And I think we definitely felt it when they scored that third goal.”
Vered added an empty-netter, and then Plattsburgh’s Connor Toomey tallied with two seconds left.

Heilbron made 40 saves for the Bantams, who will meet Adrian in next week’s semifinals.

“This was our most consistent and persistent 60-minute effort of the year,” Trinity coach Matt Greason said. “I feel they were the best team we played this year. And we needed to play our best, and we did.”
Rouleau stopped 25 of the 29 shots he faced.

Emery said the Cardinals played pretty well in the first and had their best period in the second. But he said not playing last week really affected them.

“I thought we played as hard as we played all year; I thought our game plan was good,” he said. “And it was like we were a little bit behind every rebound, a little bit slow getting pucks off in prime areas. I just don’t think we were crisp.”

he Cardinals finished with a very similar record to last year’s 19-5-2 mark, but Emery said this year’s group found ways to win some big games at the end of the season. He added that the biggest difference was in the locker room.

“We had some guys that really stepped up,” Emery said. “I just told the guys it was a real fun team to coach. And great leadership, led by Brandon (Beadow), who is like one of our best leaders we’ve ever had in all my years at Plattsburgh. He got that locker room together.”

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2014-15 - Bob's 26th work in progress ...

Blame?? Everyone knows it's all RIT's fault :p

If the RIT women hadn't moved up to D-I, they might have been hosting D-III this weekend instead of Plattsburgh, so.....there you go.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2014-15 - Bob's 26th work in progress ...

It has probable already been said but why didn't the men play at Plattsburgh Saturday say at 2:30PM and allow the women to play the game at 8.

Also who would of believed that 3 of the eastern powers, Oswego, Plattsburgh, and Norwich would all lose Saturday (2 to NESCAC schools). I got a theory about why the NESCAC appear to be doing so well recruiting in hockey. When the NCAA and or State of NY clamped down on giving out deals to Canadian hockey players the NESCAC need based system with there deep pockets doesn't appear to be effected at all. Amherst for one recruits hockey players all over North America including BC?

Correct on the ready availability of generous financial aid for NESCAC hockey player in any case where the hockey player comes from a family of modest means, with the notion of modest means reaching far up the income ladder these days. With needs-based aid at most NESCAs, there is no possibility of running afoul of the NCAA regs since the distribution of aid is essentially formula-based to all students. And of course the wealthier NESCACs (like Amherst, Bowdoin, and Williams) also have a "no loans" policy where financial aid is provided solely in the form of grants so that students can graduate from college without debt. .

OMG! A Chris Lerch sighting on the D-III board.
