Lots of good info on this week's Behind the Bench other than what Remy's already posted... and he even threw in at the end that we'll have replays and intermission/postgame interviews on the video boards!

Any mention on how recruiting is going?

Said he thinks he's got a few guys who'll be able to come in and help. Did mention that he just lost one to St. Norbert because of financial aid. Said he wants a few forwards and a few solid defensemen, and definitely wants to get in a good goalie to avoid a problem in a couple years.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 2012-13 - Season 24

I'm guessing Canton got the "maybe next year" vote....

He did say that the coaches want an even SUNYAC...

Travel Partners
Plattsburgh Potsdam
Cortland Morrisville
and yup Canton Oswego....

I'm guessing part of Norwich's opening is due to the Nov. 1st rule too now putting the Dartmouth game in doubt. With the addition of a certain state school to the schedule for next year, NU was right back at their 24 that they played this year with Dartmouth being the 25th and the Canadian exhibition being the 26th.

I'm assuming Hamilton in the first round, so...

SUNY Schedule
@ Norwich
@ Middlebury
[One of NRW or MID a second time at home]
Castleton
Skidmore
Hamilton
@ Williams
[Hobart or a 2nd game with WIL at home]

and UW-S... do we know if out-of-region counts next year, or no?

Anyway, talk about SOS!

SOS will largely be predicated on how the rest of the SUNYAC does. While that OOC schedule will help, if the SUNYAC does not improve, SOS will still be an issue.

State school from what state, in particular? And does this state school have multiple alumni that are now employed by a certain private school in VT?

Unfortunately the answer is no :(

Per Mark Christiansen:
All tickets will be general admission, day of game.

Per the Cardinal Website:
Tickets for the NCAA Quarterfinal contest will go on sale Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at the Field House Box Office. Tickets will be $6 for general admission and $3 for college students with a valid ID. The first 300 Plattsburgh State students who present a current Plattsburgh State student ID will be admitted for free.

I'd love to see a sellout, but I'm not holding my breath. Not even half full for the ECAC West finals on Sunday. Don't worry, you won't have problems getting a ticket.

Not so much of a sell out as a "Goldilocks" situation - 'Somebody has sitting in my seats, – and there they are!' - but a good game it should be.

Hey they are playing at 4pm so you can still listen to the Laker game ...

For the Plattsburgh State women’s hockey team, the stage is set.

The first-ranked Cardinals play host to St. Norbert at 4 p.m. today in the NCAA Division III quarterfinals at the Stafford Ice Arena.

Plattsburgh is making its second straight NCAA tournament appearance and ninth overall. The Cardinals are 11-7 all-time in the tournament and will be meeting the Green Knights (18-9-2) for the first time in program history.

The Cardinals finished the regular season with an unscathed 25-0-2 overall record while securing the top seed in the ECAC West tournament and serving as host for the championship.

Plattsburgh earned a 5-0 win over Neumann in the semifinals before a come-from-behind defeat of Elmira, 4-2, in the final to claim its third ECAC West title.

Coach Kevin Houle doesn’t think there is any added pressure because his team is unbeaten.

“I think it’s something that we haven’t talked about throughout the course of the season,” Houle said. “Like I said before, we’re taking everything one game at a time. We’re looking at this game as our next challenge. As long as we worry about the task at hand, we’re not worried about any outside pressures.”

Teal Gove leads all offensive categories with 25 goals, 21 assists, nine power-play goals and five game-winners. Sophomore Shannon Stewart is second in points with 37, while junior Jenny Kistner is third with 31.

Sydney Aveson anchors the Plattsburgh defense with a 1.12 goals-against average, which ranks second in Division III. Aveson also ranks eighth with a .939 save percentage.

“Our goal, just like they are any game, is to do a good job in our own end and make sure we don’t have extended shifts,” Houle said. “We hope to generate a lot of offense and limit their opportunities. For us, we want to limit our giveaways and make them earn every opportunity that they get.”

St. Norbert enters today’s game winning 13 of its last 14 games, including nine straight. Trailing 2-0 in the NCHA championship game versus Wisconsin-River Falls, the Green Knights rallied for a 3-2 overtime win to earn the program’s first berth into the NCAA Division III tournament.

“Anybody that can do that is certainly a team to contend with,” Houle said. “They’re on a great roll right now. We certainly look at them as a dangerous team and obviously a team that should be here.”

Henriette Ostergaard tops St. Norbert’s scoring leaders with 15 goals and 15 assists for 30 points. Karissa Anderson, who scored the overtime game-winner against Wisconsin-River Falls, has 14 goals and 15 assists for 29 points. Zoe Kurth and Andrea Senne total 20 and 18 points, respectively.

Kaley Gibson is the team’s primary goaltender and sports a 17-8-2 record along with a 2.16 goals-against average and a .924 save percentage.

“It’s been a real good week of practice,” Houle said. “It was a short week, but I was very pleased with the intensity and the way we progressed during the week. We had a chance to look over some video, and I think we’re ready to play.”

Adult general admission is $6 and $3 for college students with a valid ID. The first 300 Plattsburgh students who present a current ID will be admitted free. Ticket sales will begin at 2:30 p.m. at the Field House Box Office.

Cardinal women win, sending both teams to Wisconsin ;)

Cardinals best St. Norbert, secure spot in final four {Article courtesy of the Plattsburgh Press-Republican 3/10/2013}

Plattsburgh State was sitting on a 4-0 lead in the third period Saturday when St. Norbert found some life and was suddenly within two goals.

Plattsburgh Kevin Houle said the rally “absolutely” made him nervous.

But Emma Rutherford quickly scored an insurance goal and the Cardinals earned a 5-2 win in the NCAA Division III Women’s Ice Hockey Championship quarterfinals at Stafford Ice Arena.

“You know, really we fell asleep,” Houle said of the third period. “We had a turnover in the neutral zone, and everybody watched the kid skate in all alone. Again we had a turnover just outside our defensive blueline, and they walked in again.

“You can’t give a team a chance to hang around, especially a team like that. They’ve had those breaks and opportunities, some late-game heroics and they believe in themselves. Fortunately we were able to get that fifth goal and breathe a little easier at that point.”

Plattsburgh (26-0-2) will play Middlebury in the semifinals Friday in Superior, Wisc.

Zoe Kurth put the Green Knights (18-10-2) on the board 8:14 into the third with a low wrist shot on the rush. St. Norbert got another good chance shortly afterward but hit the post, and Plattsburgh soon took a timeout to regroup.

Then Henriette Ostergaard banged in a shot from the slot to pull the Knights within 4-2 with 3:37 left. But Emma Rutherford sealed it 45 seconds later.

The shots were even at 6-6 in the third, but Plattsburgh held a 38-15 advantage for the game. Sydney Aveson made 13 saves to pick up the victory.

The Cardinals jumped in front 3:14 into the game when Mia Favretto’s shot from the point was deflected in by Teal Gove, who was left alone in front of the net. Plattsburgh went on the power play late in the period, and Chelsea VanGlahn scored from the right side three seconds before intermission.

“I think it was very important to come out with the lead in the first period,” Houle said. “They’re a team that’s been on a great run, and the more they hang around and are in the game, they’re going to gain confidence.

“I just think they were a team that played very loose and confident. And for us to come out with a 2-0 lead was big.”

Kaley Gibson made a good stop on a Plattsburgh one-timer in the middle of the second and turned away another shot with a pad save shortly after. But with just over five minutes left, a shot hit her left pad and Gove collected the rebound and tucked it underneath Gibson for a 3-0 cushion. Then Shannon Stewart took a couple of whacks at another rebound out front, and the puck hit the crossbar and dropped in to make it 4-0.

Rutherford and Allison Era both finished with two points for Plattsburgh.

“We knew that they had a couple lines that were pretty dangerous,” St. Norbert coach Rob Morgan said. “And I think that their D are very, very poised with the puck and make great plays. They do a really good job of getting pucks to the net and scoring those dirty goals and winning the greasy areas.

“And we can learn from them. And we will. And we hope that in the future we’ll get another opportunity like this. But right now it’s going to sting for a while.”

Gibson totaled 33 saves.

The Green Knights were playing in the NCAA tournament for the first time. Before Saturday, they had won nine straight games, including a run through the NCHA playoffs as the fifth seed.

The Cardinals will make their second straight appearance in the final four and their seventh overall. They lost in the semifinals in overtime last year.

“Ever since we went last year, we’ve just been looking forward to getting back there,” Gove said. “We made sure throughout this season that we weren’t looking too far ahead; we always focused on whatever game we were playing.

“But now that it’s actually here, it’s exciting. It’s the best time of the season.”

The Brooks Bandits are proud to announce that 20 year old Forward Dakota Mason has committed to play at Plattsburgh State University, beginning in the fall of 2013. Located in Plattsburgh, NY the “Cardinals” play in the SUNYAC conference under long time Head Coach Bob Emery.
