PLATTSBURGH — As good a win as it was for the Plattsburgh State men’s hockey team Friday night, coach Bob Emery says his team still has a lot of work to do.

Defenseman Barry Roytman scored two goals and the Cardinals (2-0, 2-0) skated to a 4-1 victory over Geneseo (2-1, 2-1) in SUNY Athletic Conference action at the Stafford Ice Arena.

We’re still a work in progress,” he said. “You want to stay positive as a coach, but you also want your team to correct its mistakes.

“Geneseo is a good team and they’re going to win a lot of games. It was a good win for us (Friday), but we need to get better.”

The Cardinals held a 35-24 shot advantage while scoring two power-play goals and one short-handed marker.

“We did a great job in our zone without the puck and we had good special teams play,” Emery said. “We also played smart with the lead in the third period, got the puck in deep and kept the clock running. And we made sacrifices with blocked shots.

“But we still need to do a better job breaking out of our zone. We are also making too many turnovers. We had a lot of turnovers in our win over Potsdam and had some more (Friday).”

It didn’t take Plattsburgh long to take the lead for good.

With the Cardinals skating a man up, Alex Jensen got the puck to Roytman, who sent a hard slap shot off the crossbar that deflected down and into the net 4:23 into the contest.

Plattsburgh then scored a key goal while skating down a man with 26 seconds remaining in the first. Jensen broke in and Geneseo goalie Nick Horrigan was able to make the initial save. But Michael Radisa followed up to score on the rebound.

“That was a great play by Alex,” Emery said.

The Cardinals came out strong to start the second period and grabbed a 3-0 advantage just 1:57 in when Kevin Emmerling stole the puck and went in on a breakaway to beat Horrigan between the pads.

That was it for Horrigan, who was replaced by Bryan Haude.

The Knights then got a glimmer of hope when Stephen Collins scored from inside the slot at 9:14 when the Cardinals couldn’t get the puck out of their end.

But that was the only goal scored against Mathieu Cadieux, who was once against solid in the Plattsburgh nets, stopping 23 of 24 shots.

“Our goalie gives us a chance to win,” Emery said.

Plattsburgh, however, regained its three-goal lead on Roytman’s second goal of the contest, which came at the 15:37 mark. It was the Cardinals’ second power-play goal of the night as Roytman found the net with another slap shot from the point.

Neither team was able to score in the third period.

Plattsburgh went 2-for-5 on the power play, while Geneseo was 0-for-7, including giving up a goal.

The Cardinals will look to make it a weekend sweep at home when they host The College at Brockport tonight at 7 p.m. The Golden Eagles tuned up for the game with a 6-3 win at Potsdam on Friday night.

I thought time left in a soccer game was the referee's secret. How do 29 seconds left fit into the context of soccer? And isn't it called extra time? (in contrast to the time the ref adds on to game at his whim when the count up clock reaches the end, which is called "added time")

College soccer completely different than pro soccer.

Cardinals fly past Brockport in men's college hockey {Article courtesy of the Plattsburgh Press Republican 11/10/2013}

BY RICKY ST. CLAIR Press-Republican

PLATTSBURGH — Plattsburgh State men’s hockey coach Bob Emery questioned his team’s decision-making abilities with the puck in its 4-1 win over Geneseo.

Emery, now in his 24th season behind the bench, had no reason to second-guess his players Saturday.

Mark Constantine and Kevin Emmerling each scored two goals as the fourth-ranked Cardinals (3-0, 3-0 SUNYAC) drubbed The College at Brockport in SUNY Athletic Conference play at the Stafford Ice Arena, 6-0.

“Well, I thought we moved the puck well,” Emery said. “We cycled the puck well behind their goal line. We did a good job.”

Kevin Emmerling opened the game’s scoring at the 5:02 mark of the first period. After maintaining possession of the puck and fending off a defender, Dillan Fox found the sophomore forward in front.

“Coach was stressing (to) get the puck down low,” Emmerling said. “Obviously, we want to get on the board first early in the game. That’s kind of the main thing — just keeping it out of our zone and getting it in there.

“(Fox) was real important on that play. I honestly just had to tap it in; I really didn’t have to do too much. My linemates were working well down low.”

Constantine extended Plattsburgh’s lead to two by firing a shot into the top-right corner of the net. The power-play goal was scored at 10:39.

Michael Radisa scored the second period’s lone tally by redirecting a Patrick Hermans point shot past goaltender Jared Lockhurst.

“It was a good job by Hermans getting that puck to the net,” Emery said. “When you get pucks to the net, anything can happen. If you want to get goals, you’ve got to go to the net.”

Maintaining a three-goal cushion in the second period, Emery thought there were instances where his team had a lot of mental lapses.

“We didn’t do a lot of good things consistently,” Emery said. “As a coach, you’re goal every night is (for your players) to play 60 minutes. I think at one time, they had a 9-0 run in shots on net. If they could have got one or two goals there, it could have been a different game.”

Constantine, Fox and Emmerling each scored in the third period at 1:51, 5:21 and 11:25, respectively.

The second line of Alex Jensen, Fox and Constantine combined for three of the team’s six goals.

“They’re good puck-management guys,” Emery said. “They handle the puck and they protect the puck really well. They’re all good skaters, and they can do a lot with the puck by protecting it. I think they do a good job of that and getting pucks stopped and started behind the net and getting pucks low.”

While Plattsburgh converted 1-of-4 power-play opportunities, its penalty kill kept the Golden Eagles (1-3, 1-1 SUNYAC) off the scoreboard on four occasions.

The Cardinals have successfully killed off all 15 short-handed situations this season.

“We spend a lot of time on video on the PK,” Emery said. “It’s the sacrifice the guys make when they’re out there blocking shots and doing the little things on the PK.”

Mathieu Cadieux stopped all 31 shots faced, recording his second shutout this season and the seventh of his career.

Plattsburgh has outscored its opponents 13-1 through three games.

“I’d just like to see us play a little more consistently, but I’m happy with what he have going on the road at 3-0,” Emery said. “Anything less would have been unacceptable. For me, the key is — it begins and ends with defense. We’ve done a job.”

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 13-14 Season 25

Saw some really good hockey this weekend. Cards were on Fire Sat. night! Intense and lots of emotion. Power play really impressed me, good passing, quick shots, much improved in my opinion. Asst. coach doing a good job on this. Next up, big road trip.

"Behind the Bench" with Coach and Ducky Drake is A very tough act to follow, I think the"Blue LineReport" with Stephanie and Bob is coming along very nicely.

I guess one question I have been wondering about is the possibility of a few video clips of notable plays (goals, etc) being inserted into theYou Tube
productions. I think such things would be a welcome addition if technically possible.

GO CARDS !!

Cards embark on first road trip of men's hockey season {Article courtesy of the Plattsburgh Press Republican 11/15/2013}

BY COURTNEY LEWIS Press-Republican Press-Republican

Plattsburgh State will play its next nine SUNY Athletic Conference men’s hockey games on the road, starting this weekend with the longest trip of the regular season.

The Cardinals will visit Fredonia tonight and Buffalo State Saturday.

“This is a real tough road trip for us. It’s been quite a few years since we’ve been successful in both games,” Plattsburgh coach Bob Emery said. “I think they’re anxious to get on the road. Road trips can be fun because you get to hang out with the guys. So the guys are looking forward to it.”

Plattsburgh (3-0) began the season with three SUNYAC games at Stafford Ice Arena. The Cardinals will host two tournaments and two other nonconference games in the upcoming months, but their next home conference game isn’t until Feb. 7.

The last time they defeated Fredonia and Buffalo State during the same road trip was during the 2009-10 season.

The Blue Devils (1-2, 1-1 SUNYAC) knocked off Oswego on the road in their season opener and fell to Cortland the next night. Last weekend, they were shutout 2-0 by Canton.

They beat Oswego. Anytime you go into Oswego and win, you can beat anybody,” Emery said. “They’re always charged up against us.

“Fredonia plays really good defensively. We have to be prepared to win 1-0.”

Fredonia has 13 freshmen and six sophomores on its roster. Two of those young players, Hunter Long and Mitch Kaufmann, have led the Blue Devils is scoring in the early going, and freshman Chris Eiserman has seen time in net in all three games.

Buffalo State (2-2, 2-2), is coming off of a weekend split with Morrisville.

Plattsburgh is the only team still unbeaten in SUNYAC play. The Cardinals, who are ranked third in the USCHO.com Division III Men’s Poll, have been helped by their specials teams so far this season. Their penalty kill is a perfect 15-for-15, and they’ve also scored a short-handed goal.

“I think two things make your PK good — your players are willing to sacrifice, and your goalie is playing well,” Emery said. “Our penalty killing has been pretty good because the players have obviously been sacrificing a lot and Chewy (Mathieu Cadieux) has been good in net.”

Emery added that the Cardinals have experienced players on their power-play units. Defenseman Barry Roytman leads them with two power-play goals. The Cardinals rank fourth in Division III with a 33.3 percent success rate during extra-man opportunities.

Dillan Fox leads the team in overall scoring with two goals and three assists.

Emery said Plattsburgh will be without defenseman Nick Jensen for the second straight weekend. The senior has a hand injury.

The small world of Hockey. My next childhood next door neighbor from Carthage, NY now lives near Knoxville, Tn. He posted on Facebook tonight that he just got home from the Ice Bears game. They won 2-0. Eric Satim and Bryan Hince both play for Knoxville.

Cardinals start strong, hold on late in win over Fredonia {Article courtesy of the Plattsburgh Press Republican 11/16/2013}

FREDONIA — Plattsburgh State had a great start but not necessarily a great finish as it defeated Fredonia 4-2 in SUNY Athletic Conference men’s hockey Friday.

Coach Bob Emery said he liked the way the Cardinals came out of the locker room to start the game, but they didn’t have that same leadership after the first intermission. Then they were outshot and outscored in the third period.

“I’m happy to be 4-0 but disheartened that we haven’t been able to get the players to play smart hockey,” Emery said. “We’ve given teams so much life at times.

We don’t play smart with the lead. We turn the puck over. We play like a young team. We’ve got a long way to go mentally.”

Plattsburgh (4-0, 4-0 SUNYAC) visits Buffalo State tonight.

The Cardinals led 2-0 less than five minutes into Friday’s game. Mark Constantine tallied at 3:01, and 1:25 later Dakota Mason scored his first collegiate goal and Kyle Hall earned his first career assist.

I’m happy when everyone gets their first goal, but the way Dakota got it was great,” Emery said. “He won a 1-on-1 battle and then walked right out and scored. Winning the 1-on-1 battle was what I like the best from a coach’s standpoint.”

Mason then picked up his first assist when Connor Gorman made it 3-0 near the end of the period. Kevin Emmerling also assisted.

Jared Wynia put Fredonia on the board 6:23 into the second period, and Luke Baleshta lit the lamp for the Cardinals just 48 seconds later.

The Blue Devils got a goal from Travis Fernley early in the third — Emery said Mathieu Cadieux misplayed the shot — and held a 13-8 advantage in shots for the period.

Emery said Plattsburgh played pretty well defensively in the third, but “we gave up that goal, and that really ignited the flame for Fredonia.”

Cadieux turned away 22 shots in Plattsburgh’s net, and Chris Eiserman had 24 saves for Fredonia (1-3, 1-2).

Buffalo State (3-2, 3-2) beat Potsdam 3-2 Friday. Emery hopes to see smarter play by the Cardinals today.

We’ve got a talented team. That’s only a small part of it,” Emery said. “Character, heart and mental toughness come into play. And we gotta get better at the three besides talent.”
