Cardinals to meet Mustangs twice this weekend {Article courtesy of the Plattsburgh Press Republican 11/22/2013}

The Plattsburgh State men’s hockey team heads to Morrisville this weekend, and for the first time since the Mustangs joined the SUNY Athletic Conference, it will be a two-game weekend for both teams.

The conference changed the schedule this season so that each team plays its two games against Morrisville in one weekend rather than in a home-and-home series. The Cardinals visit Morrisville this year and will host both games next year.

Because there is an odd number of teams in the conference, Morrisville does not have a travel partner. In the past, Plattsburgh would have just one game on weekends that it played the Mustangs.

Plattsburgh coach Bob Emery said the change makes sense, adding that the old schedule wasn’t fair to the Mustangs because their opponents would have a single game, while they’d have to prepare for two different opponents and play two games.

I think it’s pretty good,” he said. “It wasn’t great going down there for one game.

The coach said that knowing they’d play the same team twice didn’t change much this week for the Cardinals (4-0-1, 4-0-1 SUNYAC).

“It’s definitely harder to beat the same team two times in a row, especially on the road,” Emery said. “Preparation for Friday is the same (as usual). Preparation for Saturday is different because it’s the same team. You’d hope there would be less work for our coaching staff on Saturday. But knowing our coaching staff, we’ll still be working just as hard.”

Morrisville’s lone win came against Buffalo State. Last weekend, the Mustangs tied Cortland 4-4 and then lost 6-1 the next night.

Mike Dolman, who has eight assists and one goal, leads the team in scoring. Ryan Marcuz is next with five goals and three assists. Senior Christopher Azzano has been in net for four five games and is 0-4-1.

“They’re a really chippy team, no doubt about it,” Emery said. “I expect to see them play hard, play chippy, try to take us off our game.

The Mustangs (1-4-1, 1-4-1) have shown they can score — they’ve netted 18 goals in six games and have scored four or more on three occasions. But at the other end, they’ve given up 32 goals. Their 5.33 goals allowed per game ties them for 69th out of 72 Division III teams.

Plattsburgh, on the other hand, has the stingiest defense in the country so far this season, having allowed just four goals in five games.

Goaltender Mathieu Cadieux boasts a 0.79 GAA and a .966 save percentage.

Sophomore forward Dillan Fox leads the Cardinals offensively with three goals and three assists. Mark Constantine (3-2-5), Luke Baleshta (1-4-5) and Alex Jensen (0-5-5) are right behind him.

The fourth-ranked Cardinals are coming off a three-point road trip: they beat Fredonia and tied Buffalo State. Plattsburgh holds a two-point lead in the SUNYAC standings, and the second-place Bengals have played an additional game.

Plattsburgh’s lineup will see some changes this weekend, partly because the Cardinals took nine penalties against Buffalo State. Emery said he doesn’t announce his lineup until the day of the game, “but there will be some guys sitting for lack of discipline.

In addition, senior defenseman Nick Jensen, who has missed the last four games with a hand injury, is still out this weekend and freshman forward Dakota Mason did not make the trip because of an injury. Emery said both players are “week-to-week.

Cardinal hockey breaks away in third {Article courtesy of the Plattsburgh Press Republican 11/23/2013}

MORRISVILLE — You wouldn’t think Plattsburgh State’s goalie would be a key player in game in which the Cardinals won 7-1 and owned the shots 56-16.

But Plattsburgh coach Bob Emery said Mathieu Cadieux made the difference in the second period Friday
, and then the Cardinals broke open the game in the third for a SUNY Athletic Conference men’s hockey victory over Morrisville.

“We had another bad second period, and if it wasn’t for our goalie I think things would’ve have been different heading into the third period,” Emery said. “We were very fortunate that it was 3-1 after two periods. We played well in the first period, played well in the third, but we had a bad second period.”

Cadieux made 15 saves — 10 in the second period — and Alex Jensen led Plattsburgh offensively with a goal and two assists. The Cardinals (5-0-1, 5-0-1 SUNYAC) and Mustangs (1-5-1, 1-5-1) will match up again tonight.

As has been the trend this season, the Cardinals got off to a hot start and then allowed their opponent to push back in second period. Dillan Fox and Jensen scored less than two minutes apart, and Luke Baleshta’s short-handed tally late in the first gave Plattsburgh a 3-0 lead.

The Mustangs answered with a short-handed goal by Josh Baker early in the second and put 11 shots on goal in the period after just four in the opening frame.

“I was just happy to get out of the second period,” Emery said. “They took it to us. They had some great chances. But with a goalie like Chewy there for you, like one of the assistant coaches said, it masks everything. He can mask all of our mistakes.”

Emery added that after taking the early lead, the Cardinals stopped focusing on defense first and started turning the puck over.

The floodgates opened in the third.

Ryan Farnan put their lead back to three at 8:17 of the third, and Connor Gorman added another goal just over four minutes later. Mark Constantine and Adam Scuglia also scored before the period ended.

“In the third period we were able to get that three-goal lead back, and I think that took the wind out of Morrisville’s sails,” Emery said.

Morrisville took 12 penalties in the third period, including bench penalties for unsportsmanlike conduct and game misconduct. The Mustangs totaled 38 penalty minutes.

Farnan and Scuglia both got into the scoring column after lengthy droughts. Scuglia, who played sparingly the last two seasons, scored a goal for the first time since late 2011, while Farnan found the net for the first time since early 2012. Farnan also earned an assist Friday.

Defenseman Barry Roytman had two helpers for Plattsburgh, and Fox also finished the night with two points.

Christopher Azzano turned away 49 shots for the Mustangs.

There is also likely to be many season ticket holders away for the holiday, look for empty seats during the first 5 - 10 minutes and take an empty seat if it is better than the one you got.

PSU men's hockey hangs on against Morrisville {Article courtesy of the Plattsburgh Press Republican 11/22/2013}

Emery would say "We are a work in progress." vs Coppola "we can get a lot better. We’re not at the point we want to be."

MORRISVILLE — Plattsburgh State scored seven goals against Morrisville Friday, and assistant coach Mike Coppola said the Cardinals came out like they expected the same Saturday.

Instead, they ended up hanging on to a narrow lead in the third period. Connor Gorman had a goal and three assists, and Barry Roytman tallied the eventual game-winner late in the third as Plattsburgh held off Morrisville 4-3 in SUNY Athletic Conference men’s hockey.

We had a lot of turnovers, played selfish,” Coppola said. “I think we were hoping it would be a game like (Friday) night — hoping we’d get a lot of goals. We acted like we wanted that, and we played that way. It wasn’t our kind of game.”

After being outshot by a wide margin and spending ample time in the penalty box Friday, the Mustangs played a different type of game Saturday.

I think Morrisville came out, played a little harder and a littler cleaner and kept themselves out of the box,” Coppola said.

Neither team got on the board until near the end of the second period, when Plattsburgh’s (6-0-1, 6-0-1 SUNYAC) Gorman found the net. Gorman then assisted on power-play goals by Dillan Fox and Alex Jensen in the first 6:13 of the third.

Once Plattsburgh got a three-goal lead in Friday’s third period, the Mustangs faded. But Saturday, they clawed back.

Joe Santino netted a power-play goal in the middle of the period, and Ryan Marcuz put Morrisville (1-6-1, 1-6-1) back within a goal at 13:04.

We don’t have that killer instinct where we put a team away,” Coppola said. “That was the first power-play goal that we’ve let up. We were a little disappointed; our penalty kill has been very good. But we weren’t able to clear the puck on a mistake.

Roytman gave the Cardinals a little more breathing room at 17:11 with his third power-play marker of the season, and they ended up needing it. Morrisville made it 4-3 in the final minute with a goal by Marc-Antoine Chaput.

Mathieu Cadieux stopped 28 shots for the Cardinals, and Coppola said the netminder kept them in the game. Christopher Azzano, who was peppered with 56 shots on Friday, faced 38 Saturday and stopped 34.

Plattsburgh defenseman Rich Botting picked up two assists.

“We went to Morrisville for four points, and we’re leaving Morrisville with four points,” Coppola said. “I think there’s 20, 30 guys who agree we can get a lot better. We’re not at the point we want to be.”

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 13-14 Season 25

3 for 7 on the PP and a 4 point weekend is about the only positives you could take out of yesterday. Maybe Bob needs to preach a "5 goal lead" because three goals just isn't doing it anymore. I feel like an Oswego fan asking for 6+ goals a game, but its a given. Get up by 3 and off goes the gas peddle.

Take nothing away from Morrisville, they came out like yesterday never happened and played free with nothing to lose. Hollywood Azzano kept the ponies in it, but you've got to push that much harder. Here was a team that was blown out 7-1 the night before and was now tied 0-0 after nearly 40 minutes. You have to tip your hat to a Morrisville team that simply out worked Plattsburgh much of that 3rd. They didn't get the call in the last :07 seconds as it was thr correct call, but probably deserved it IMO.

Off to the Primelink.......

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 13-14 Season 25

File last night's game under "Shut up and get on the bus"...... Cards need to be more consistent in their play, especially with the dreaded 3 goal lead. My thought last night was to get that second goal as I had no doubt Morris the Cat could not get three in a period....they did though. Sounds like a pinball off skates and legs accounted for a couple of them. Mission accomplished with a 4 pointer, and nobody will remember how tight it was as time goes on.
Right now the one's to circle on the calendar are the second game at the Primelink and the end of semester roadie at Oswego. Win those two and we could have something here.

Benchmark weekend for Cards as they host PrimeLink Shootout {Article courtesy of the Plattsburgh Press Republican 11/29/2013}

Plattsburgh State’s numbers have been strong — it has an unbeaten record, it’s ranked in the top three nationally and it’s at or near the top of several national men’s hockey statistical categories. But the Cardinals haven’t been pleased with the way they’ve played in some games despite positive outcomes.

They expect this weekend to give them a clear idea of where they stand.

We’re going to really know what we’re all about after this weekend; we’re going to really know what the country’s all about after this weekend,” Plattsburgh coach Bob Emery said. “The PrimeLink every year brings like a national flavor. So we’ll learn a lot, because the better the teams you play against, the mistakes will get magnified.

“Because if you make mistakes in your own end like we’ve been making, the puck will be in the back of our own net a lot more.”

No. 3 Plattsburgh hosts the PrimeLink Great Northern Shootout this weekend and will meet Wisconsin-Superior tonight. No. 2 Norwich and No. 15 Middlebury will face off in the opening contest, and the winners will play for the championship Saturday night. The third-place game will precede the championship game.

Wisconsin-Superior (3-4) finished last season in a funk and dropped its first three games this year to extend its winless streak to 11 games. But the Yellowjackets have won three of their last four, including a 3-2 victory over St. Scholastica last Saturday.

Pat Dalbec, Cody Hotchkin and Eric Shand all have six points for Wisconsin-Superior.

“We don’t’ know anything about them,” Emery said. “We’re just going to go out and play, try to play good Cardinal hockey and try to take care of business that way.”

Norwich (5-0-1) won its first four games and then tied St. Anselm last Friday before beating New England College 6-2 the next night. The Cadets, who have won the PrimeLink the last two years, are second in Division III with a 5.83 goals-per-game average.

Middlebury (3-0-1) began the season two weeks ago with a tie against Bowdoin and then won its next three, including a 5-4 overtime decision at Connecticut College last Saturday.

“We have two big nonconference games, which go a long way for us, and we need to get the wins here,” Plattsburgh defenseman Barry Roytman said. “We definitely have to be better in our D-zone. We have to definitely pin guys better down low, and every time we get a chance to get the puck out, the puck has to get out.”

The Cardinals (6-0-1) have had a freshman and two sophomores playing on the blue line, and they’ve been missing senior Nick Jensen. But Emery said their problems in the defensive end don’t necessarily start with the defensemen.

It’s more of the forwards not getting the pucks out and playing better in our own end than our defense,” Emery said. “Our forwards are turning over pucks feeding the point or what have you. But I think we have to do a better job as a unit of five when we’re out there playing better in our end, thinking defense first and getting pucks out that way.”

Emery said Jensen, who broke his hand in the season opener, will be out for the rest of the first semester. The coach wasn’t sure if Dakota Mason, who was out last weekend, will be ready to return this weekend.

Cardinals back in PrimeLink championship game {Article courtesy of the Plattsburgh Press Republican 11/30/2013}

BY COURTNEY LEWIS Press-Republican

PLATTSBURGH — Plattsburgh State jumped in front early Friday, as it often has this season, and this time the Cardinals were happy with the way they played once they had the lead.

Plattsburgh scored twice in the first 9:43 of the game and held Wisconsin-Superior at bay the rest of the way for a 4-1 victory in the first round of the PrimeLink Great Northern Shootout. The Cardinals will meet Middlebury in the annual men’s hockey tournament’s championship game today at the Stafford Ice Arena.

No. 3 Plattsburgh (7-0-1) has sometimes had lapses after taking the lead, but coach Bob Emery said his team was more consistent Friday.

I think we played a pretty smart 60 minutes for the most part,” Emery said. “I think we were a little opportunistic early in the game, but I think we played smart with the lead and we did a good job chipping pucks out and getting pucks in deep when we had that lead.”

No. 15 Middlebury reached the final by winning a shootout against Norwich. Plattsburgh will be in the championship game for the first time since 2010 and is seeking its fourth PrimeLink title.

“It’s good to finally get back to the championship game here,” Plattsburgh junior Alex Brenton said. “It’s always a hard tournament. All these teams that come here are very tough. We just gotta come (today), play our A game, and we should be fine.

Michael Cassidy scored from Brenton to put Plattsburgh ahead 6:31 into the game, and then Brenton made it 2-0 a few minutes later. Wisconsin-Superior’s Anton Svensson pulled his team back within a goal at 12:57.

Dillan Fox slid in a shot 1:10 into the second to push Plattsburgh’s lead to two again.

The Cardinals have been working on improving their play in the defensive end.

We played a solid game front to back,” Brenton said. “Chewy (Mathieu Cadieux) stood on his head; he made a couple big saves. We were blocking shots as forwards. Our defense were making some nice, solid defensive plays as well, and we put a couple pucks in the back of the net and won the game.

Alex Jensen added an empty-net goal for Plattsburgh. Cadieux made 19 saves, and Wisconsin-Superior’s Drew Strandberg made 24.

While the Yellowjackets (3-5) couldn’t get any closer in the last two periods, Emery said they pushed the Cardinals.

We haven’t been challenged like that all year long,” Emery said. “They’re a good team. We were very fortunate in the end. They were coming, they were coming, they were coming — forechecking like heck on us in the third period.

In the day’s first game, Michael Longo poked a loose puck past a screened Matic Marinsek to put Middlebury (3-0-2) ahead in the second period, but Norwich’s William Pelletier tied it before the end of the period with a power-play goal. With no goals in the third period or the five-minute overtime, the game went to a three-round shootout. Louis Belisle and Jake Charles found the net on Middlebury’s first two shots, and goalie Mike Peters stopped two Norwich (5-0-2) shooters to send the Panthers to the championship game.

Peters made 25 saves, and Marinsek had 23.
