Plattsburgh State Hockey 13-14 Season 25

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 13-14 Season 25

Well deserved, Ducky - looking forward to wishing you well in person a week from today at WHITEOUT in Oz....

Ducky and George Como of WDEV are both outstanding, traditional play by play guys. You really come to appreciate their detailed approach when you listen to certain NHL radio broadcasts that get off track quick. Ducky will indeed be missed; a lot of great memories! Depending upon the volume of archives WIRY has maintained over the years, a "40 years/Great Moments" type retrospective would be a very cool way for him to finish things out this spring.

Someone should get him a golden fork...

The closest I come is a chef's award with a fork and carving knife crossed in front of a chef's hat on a base....looking at other options...figured out the largest online trophy sites are owned by the same co.

No forks on Dinns...game is in 7 days - not sure we can find an iron worker in time...so it may have to be more conventional...but I expect there will be something appropriate from the kids of WNYO and WTOP....

Ask somebody in Shops (Maintenance) @ OSU. You'd be surprised at the talent there. We had a guy in our shops @ work that was a wizard with the welder. He would make pretty cool sculptures.

Cards get jump on Panthers, claim PrimeLink {Article courtesy of the Plattsburgh Press Republican 12/1/2013}

PLATTSBURGH — Bob Emery expected to learn a lot about his Plattsburgh State team during the PrimeLink Great Northern Shootout, and one thing he learned was the Cardinals are willing to sacrifice.

Plattsburgh tallied three goals in the first period and defeated Middlebury 3-1 in the championship game of the annual men’s hockey tournament Saturday at the Stafford Ice Arena. Middlebury coach Bill Beaney praised the Cardinals’ shot-blocking, and Plattsburgh goaltender Mathieu Cadieux said he was appreciative of their effort.

There were a lot of mistakes out there (Saturday), but I know we found a way to win and that was good for me,” Emery said. “And we became very sacrificial, and the guys are willing to pay the price to win. And that’s clearly evident, again, by the blocked shots.”

The Cardinals have now won the tournament four of the five times it’s been held in Plattsburgh. Earlier in the day, Wisconsin-Superior knocked off No. 2 Norwich 3-0 to claim third place.

No. 3 Plattsburgh (8-0-1) gave up just two goals on the weekend, and although Cadieux was named the tournament’s MVP, he credited the Cardinals’ team defense.

“On a personal note, that’s definitely something that I’m happy with, but ultimately it was the team in front,” Cadieux said. “(Saturday) and (Friday) they were blocking shots, keeping the chances down. They made my job really easy. It was awesome.”

Michael Radisa and Barry Roytman represented Plattsburgh on the All-Tournament Team, and Patrick Hermans was named the Outstanding Rookie.

Plattsburgh took control at the start. Connor Gorman scored from the left circle 3:29 into the game, and Dakota Mason put in a shot from down low just over two minutes later. Shortly before the end of the period, Radisa skated down the left side and ripped a shot that beat Michael Peters five-hole for a 3-0 lead heading into the intermission.

The Cardinals scored three goals on nine shots in the period, and Peters was pulled in favor of Nick BonDurant after the third goal.

The one sticking point for Emery was the way Plattsburgh played after taking the three-goal lead, which has been one of his concerns all season.

It was a good thing we had good leadership coming out of the locker room — had a good first period — because we didn’t play great after that,” Emery said. “I gotta give Middlebury a lot of credit. They didn’t quit. They came after us.

BonDurant stopped all 18 shots he faced, and Beaney said the Panthers did a better job playing their game in the second and third periods.

Cadieux made several good saves, including one on a short-handed breakaway, in the second period to keep No. 15 Middlebury (3-1-2) off the board. But 11:12 into the third, Louis Belisle spoiled the shutout. Cadieux finished with 20 saves.

The best team won,” Beaney said. “They played harder than we did for 60 minutes, and I thought their goalie was good. Our execution wasn’t what I’d hoped it would be, but part of that is because I think Plattsburgh played real well.

“And I think they’re solid in every position, and I think they’ve got a real chance to have a special year, for sure
.”

In the consolation game, Wisconsin-Superior (4-5) had a 5-on-3 advantage late in the first period, and Pat Dalbec capitalized with a shot from the point that hit Matic Marinsek and rolled past him into the net. Cody Hotchkin scored in the middle of the third period, and Dalbec added an empty-netter. Dayn Belfour recorded the shutout with 27 saves.

The Yellowjackets became the first team from the West Region to win a game in the PrimeLink.

Cards focused on Cortland before facing rival Oswego {Article courtesy of the Plattsburgh Press Republican 12/6/2013}

When Plattsburgh State coach Bob Emery was asked about Saturday’s opponent, which just happens to be archrival Oswego, he feigned confusion.

“Who? Uh, we play Cortland Friday,” Emery said.

The Cardinals do indeed visit the Red Dragons for a SUNY Athletic Conference men’s hockey contest today, and they’re trying to learn from last season and be sure not to overlook anyone.

Plattsburgh (8-0-1, 6-0-1 SUNYAC) is fresh off a PrimeLink Great Northern Shootout championship and looking to close the first semester unbeaten.

I gotta think we have a little bit more confidence coming off of two wins in the PrimeLink,” Emery said. “But every day’s a new fight in Division III. And we found out last year that one or two games can keep you out of the playoffs come the end of the year.

It’s quite ironic we’re coming off a little bit of a high here, and one of the teams that gave us a blemish in the league last year with a tie was Cortland. And we gotta go down there and take care of business.”

The Red Dragons (3-4-2, 3-3-1) are fourth in the conference standings and winless in their last three games. They played a nonconference series with Neumann last week, falling 7-2 and then tying the Knights 2-2.

Leading scorer Nick Zappia has 12 points on three goals and nine assists.

Cortland tripped up Plattsburgh at the end of the first semester last year, scoring a third-period goal for a 3-3 draw.

Oswego (4-3, 3-2) is one point behind Cortland in the standings. The Lakers, who lost their top nine scorers from last year’s team, began the season with a 3-2 overtime loss to Fredonia and dropped another SUNYAC game to Geneseo two weeks ago. They were off last weekend.

Currently, Oswego’s top five scorers are four freshmen and a sophomore.

Plattsburgh goaltender Mathieu Cadieux said he’s not sure what to expect from the Lakers.

“Honestly, I don’t know,” Cadieux said. “I haven’t really looked into them much, but I know they’re a young team, so it will be interesting to see how they are.”

The Cardinals didn’t just gain confidence from their PrimeLink performance — they also claimed the No. 1 ranking in the USCHO.com Division III Men’s Poll. But they insist they aren’t placing any importance on that. In fact, Emery and Cadieux both said it may make things harder for them.

It doesn’t matter to us, but I think being ranked anywhere high, you know you’re going to get other teams’ best games because they’re going to be going into it looking at ‘Oh, we’re playing a high ranked team,’” Cadieux said. “No matter where we’re ranked, we’re still going to try to come out and play our best game.”

Cardinals pull away from Cortland {Article courtesy of the Plattsburgh Press Republican 12/7/2013}

CORTLAND — The Cortland Red Dragons played strong defense for two periods Friday, but Plattsburgh State wore them down and broke the game open with three goals in the third.

Mark Constantine had a goal and as assist as the Cardinals won the SUNY Athletic Conference men’s hockey game 4-0.

“They were great defensively. Territorially, we had the puck in their end a lot,” Plattsburgh coach Bob Emery said. “It’s hard to play good, solid defense for 60 minutes. Cortland was bending, bending, bending, and they were playing hard. We kept the puck in low, and Constantine got a nice goal, and then (Dillan) Fox had a nice goal. That all originated down low.”

The top-ranked Cardinals (9-0-1, 7-0-1 SUNYAC) wrap up the first semester tonight at Oswego.

Cortland (3-5-2, 3-4-1) fired 31 shots at Plattsburgh’s net, forcing Mathieu Cadieux to make some tough saves. He totaled 31 to earn his third shutout of the season.

Alex Brenton scored at 15:14 of the first period, and the Cardinals hung onto the 1-0 lead until the middle of the third period.

I thought we were being too fancy for the first two periods,” Emery said. “We passed up a lot of good shots, good scoring chances looking for the pretty goal. We gotta work against that and keep it simple.”

Constantine gave Plattsburgh some breathing room 9:52 into the third, followed by goals from Fox and Kyle Hall. Freshman Graham Yeo assisted on the last goal for his first collegiate point.

Lyle Rocker made 36 saves for the Red Dragons.

Give the team credit. Cortland is a hard rink to play in, especially when you’re playing Oswego the next night,” Emery said. “We don’t use that as an excuse, but I know it’s hard.”

The Lakers (5-2, 4-2) defeated Potsdam 7-1 Friday.

Oswego has been getting better and better every game,” Emery said. “They shellacked Potsdam (Friday), so it’s going to be a tough game. We’ll have our work cut out for us.”
