Plattsburgh State Hockey 13-14 Season 25

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 13-14 Season 25

Agree. There is a lot of important hockey to play for everyone.
double agree, the way that last weekend went one never knows, and that includes a VERY lackluster win by Oswego at home to Cortland.

Cardinals back at home as regular season nears end -- {Article courtesy of the Plattsburgh Press Republican 2/7/2014}

As Plattsburgh State enters the final two weekends of the regular season, coach Bob Emery hopes the Cardinals will ramp things up.

“Well, I don’t know if any of our guys have a sense of urgency. That’s just not the type of makeup of our team, unfortunately,” Emery said. “We’re a skilled team, a fast team, so we have to compensate one way or another.

“Hopefully as the season goes on and the games get bigger, we can find that sense of urgency.”

Plattsburgh has four regular-season men’s hockey games left, starting with Fredonia tonight and Buffalo State Saturday. The Cardinals (16-3-2, 9-1-2 SUNYAC) are first in the SUNY Athletic Conference standings and trying to hold off Geneseo, which has six games left. Buffalo State is in third place.

Mark Constantine, for one, thinks the intensity is picking up.

“Every game is meaning so much more,” the junior forward said. “Each game is a playoff game now, pretty much.”

Fredonia (7-9-4, 4-4-3) swept Morrisville last weekend. The Blue Devils are in fifth place and looking to hang onto a playoff spot.

Plattsburgh beat Fredonia 4-2 in their first meeting this season.

“With Fredonia, they can be a team that can come in here and give you a bomb,” Emery said. “They’ve taken points from us in the past here. So they’re going to come in here, let it all hang out, sacrifice a lot, block a lot of shots and try to wait for us to make a mistake.”

Buffalo State (9-8-3, 6-3-2) defeated Cortland and Oswego two weeks and had last weekend off.

Constantine leads Plattsburgh with nine goals, and Alex Jensen, Dillan Fox and Alex Brenton all have eight. Jensen has a team-high 22 points.

Jensen missed a 5-3 loss to Geneseo and a 5-4 win over Brockport last weekend because of a knee injury. Emery said the junior winger was looking good in practice but would be a game-day decision.

After playing six straight road games, the sixth-ranked Cardinals will be back at Stafford Ice Arena for at least four games. Constantine said they’re looking forward to playing in front of a Stafford crowd.

“It’s going to be nice to have the fans finally with us and not against us,” he said. “It’s a lot easier to play at home than away. With winter break, no one around and then going on the road, it was pretty long, and it wasn’t really fun.

Cardinals hand Blue Devils loss {Article courtesy of the Plattsburgh Press Republican 2/8/2014}

After allowing nine goals last weekend, Plattsburgh State got this weekend off to a better start defensively, giving up just one Friday.

Fredonia couldn’t generate many quality scoring chances as the Cardinals secured a 4-1 SUNY Athletic Conference men’s hockey victory at Stafford Ice Arena.

That was one of the better defensive efforts, I thought, of the season,” Plattsburgh coach Bob Emery said. “As far as turnovers go, we have to strive for perfection. We’re never going to get there, but we were closer (Friday) than we’ve ever been.

We had a few turnovers, but I thought overall we did a good job, especially in the second and third periods, of not turning pucks over. And that was what I was pleased with.”

Offensively, Dillan Fox had a two-point night for No. 6 Plattsburgh (17-3-2, 10-1-2), which will host Buffalo State tonight.

Fox put Plattsburgh ahead 5:30 into the first period. Then Dakota Mason scored in the middle of the second period, and Alex Jensen, back after missing last weekend with a knee injury, stretched the lead to 3-0 about three minutes later. Fox assisted on Jensen’s goal.

Alex Brenton tallied in the third, giving him nine goals on the season. That’s a career high for the junior forward and also ties him for the team lead with Fox and Jensen. Brenton finished with eight goals and four assists last year, and he said he tries to keep things simple.

“Just shooting the puck and working hard, and that’s all it is,” he said. “You just gotta shoot the puck, get the puck on net, and it’s going to find a way.”

Although he skated with Ryan Farnan and Zach Popp on Friday, Brenton has spent much of the last two seasons with Michael Radisa and Michael Cassidy. He said those two are good at working hard in the corners and then feeding him pucks, which is evident in the trio’s numbers — Brenton one just assist while both of his linemates have more helpers than goals.

“My whole life I’ve kind of been a goal scorer — or I’ve always found the net more than I’ve found other people,” Brenton said. “I just like to think that once I get inside the top of the circles, I just put the puck on net and they go in for me.”

The puck didn’t go in for Fredonia (6-10-4, 4-5-3) until late in Friday’s game. Mathieu Cadieux stopped 20 shots, shutting the Blue Devils out until Zach White beat him with a laser from the right circle at 8:17 of the third.

Jeff Flagler made 29 saves for Fredonia.

Plattsburgh now has 22 points in the SUNYAC standings, seven more than third-place Buffalo State (9-8-4, 6-3-3). The Bengals tied Potsdam 1-1 Friday.

“Buffalo State’s had our number over the last couple years,” Emery said. “They have a great goalie, and they know that. And they play really good, strong, hard hockey in front of him.”

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 13-14 Season 25

Cadieux, Cardinals shut out Buffalo State in men's hockey {Article courtesy of the Plattsburgh Press Republican 2/9/2014}

Mathieu Cadieux kept the puck out of Plattsburgh State’s net for 48 minutes and 17 seconds Friday before Fredonia got one past him.

Saturday, he finished off the shutout.

The senior goaltender made 24 saves as the Cardinals beat Buffalo State 2-0 in SUNY Athletic Conference men’s hockey at Stafford Ice Arena.

“I thought we were good at times and bad at times. And when we were bad at times, it’s good to have an All-American goalie like Cadieux,” Plattsburgh coach Bob Emery said. “He was super (Saturday). He makes it look easy a lot, but you gotta know the game to know without him, we don’t win that game (Saturday).”

The Cardinals (18-3-2, 11-1-2 SUNYAC) needed just 26 seconds to pull ahead of the Bengals. Michael Radisa scored with assists from Michael Cassidy and Barry Roytman.

“To get a goal early against a team that’s so good defensively was huge,” Cadieux said. “I think that gave us a little bit of confidence that we could get one that early on them.”

But Emery thought the quick goal made the sixth-ranked Cardinals think things were going to be easy all night. He said they let up a little bit and were passive offensively at times.

Five minutes into the second period, Luke Baleshta was assessed a major for grasping the facemask after some pushing and shoving in front of the Buffalo State net. The Cardinals killed off most of the penalty, and then the Bengals(9-9-4, 6-4-3) got whistled, making it 4-on-4.

They were unbelievable in front of me,” Cadieux said of the penalty killers. “I’m pretty sure on the five-minute major I may have only had one shot on net. There was a lot of blocked shots, a lot of forcing them wide. And a lot of times they didn’t even let them get set up, which was great.”

Late in the period, Alex Jensen wrapped around the net and slipped the puck in the open right corner for a 2-0 cushion.

Emery noted that the Bengals came at Plattsburgh in the last 10 minutes of the game, forechecking hard. To makes things tougher on the Cardinals, they were missing blueliner Nick Jensen, who got hurt earlier in the game.

“People don’t realize when you go from six D to five, it’s not just like losing one. It’s a huge drop in numbers,” Emery said. “And it really showed; our defense was getting really tired during the game.”

The coach said Nick Jensen “banged his knee.” Radisa, a forward, had to be helped off the ice early in the third after he was hit hard in the corner. He did not return, and Emery did not have an update after the game.

The Cardinals don’t play next weekend, and Emery said the timing of the bye week is perfect, adding that besides Saturday’s injuries, several other players are banged up.

Kevin Carr made 29 saves for Buffalo State. The Bengals were without their top two scorers, Dan Turgeon and Mike Zannella, as well as defenseman Jason Cleaver. All three received disqualification penalties Friday night against Potsdam.

The Cardinals wore green jerseys with white shamrocks on them. The jerseys were auctioned after the game, with proceeds going to Hockey Coaches Care, a charity that helps members of the hockey community who are affected by illness, injury or other hardships. Emery hoped to raise $5,000 and said the donation would be made in memory of Paula Roll, the late wife of current Nazareth coach and former Oswego coach George Roll.

The Cardinals wore camouflage jerseys for one game last year, and Emery said they were looking for another theme.

We don’t play (regular-season games) into March, but it’s pretty close to now,” he said. “I’m not a guy that’s going to come out with Valentine’s jerseys next week, so shamrock it was. And hopefully it will bring a lot of money for a great cause.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 13-14 Season 25

Zannella from Buff St may be facing more disciplinary action as well. He was ejected from the game on Friday nite against P'dam with about 11 seconds to go in OT and he was standing by the door watching the last few seconds when he shoved a staff person to re-enter the melee at center ice. The officials were notified at the conclusion of the contest on Friday. And its on video too, not sure what OR if the SUNYAC will do.

I know in USA Hockey that's considered leaving the bench to enter an altercation (5 + game). I would imagine that's a DQ in NCAA land.

I think the main thing here though is the "shoving a staff member" that could (and should) make this punishment severe. Getting into a physical altercation with someone who is not a participant of the game (fans/rink staff/media) results in the harshest punishments a league can hand out (Artest melee anyone.) I haven't seen the event or the video to make a guess as far as suspension, but with only 3 games left in the regular season for BSU - I would find it hard to believe we'd see him again.

Just watching the Findland-Canada womens game. They were talking about coach Kevin Dineen's brothers and said brother Jerry was a big nasty player at Plattsburgh State.

In My Opinion: Support gave boost to broadcasting

By DUCKY DRAKE

As many of you know, this is my 40th and final year of broadcasting Plattsburgh State Cardinal Hockey.

It’s been quite a run!

I’ve broadcast games for every Plattsburgh State hockey coach, from John Corker through Bob Emery.

I’ve broadcast the exploits of just about every player to wear the red and white from A-Z.

In the more than 1,000 games were Prime Link, ECAC-West, SUNYAC and NCAA championships — I’ve seen and broadcast them all.

I think my favorite championship memory is the 2001 NCAA Championship at Rochester Institute of Technology.

It wasn’t just because RIT was undefeated going into the game, had beaten Plattsburgh decidedly 8-2 earlier in the year and was on their home ice, but because I had suffered a stroke in 2000 and wasn’t even sure I’d be able to broadcast games ever again. With the assistance of speech therapists from both the Clinton County Health Department and Plattsburgh State, I was able to recover my ability to speak again.

I also need to thank Coach Bob Emery, who had assistant Steve Moffat drop off some videotapes of games, at my home, so that I could practice. So the 2001 NCAA Championship was special to Plattsburgh State, as well as to me.

These last 40 years have gone by in the speed of a Brendon Hodge slap shot.*There are so many, many folks to thank and too many to mention, individually by name.

Thank yous include coaches, assistant coaches, players, athletic directors, sport information directors, along with their assistants, trainers, student managers, rink managers and personnel.

I also need to thank my broadcast partners along the way, including John Mayette, Brad Ott and my current partner for the last dozen years, Rob Knowles. You all have made me a better hockey announcer.

I want to thank Prime Link, Fredonia, Buffalo State, Cortland, Oswego and Brockport, as well as Middlebury College, for taking time prior to or during the games to recognize and acknowledge my 40 years of hockey broadcasting.

Last, but certainly not least, Plattsburgh State fans, thank you. I couldn’t have done it without your support, kind words and gestures. You don’t know how much that meant to me. You are the greatest!

In summary, “You’ve had me all the way,” but it’s time “to stick a fork in the Duck ... I’m done.”

Thanks for 40 years of memories.
