Plattsburgh State Hockey 13-14 Season 25

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 13-14 Season 25

When Potsdam scored to make it 4-2 with almost 3 minutes left, why did the Potsdam goalie stay in the net? The face-off was deep in Cardinal territory. Was the coach thinking..."4-2 sounds respectable" let's leave it that way. You've got to give your kids a chance to pull off the miracle don't you ?

I was thinking the same thing!

I don't have an answer for that one. I am very proud of the way the Bears competed last night and never gave up. I do know this however, they have a lot of ground to make up if they have any hopes of making the playoffs.

Brenton scores twice, Cards top Bears {Article courtesy of the Plattsburgh Press Republican 1/25/2014}

Plattsburgh State picked up its play in the second period Friday and scored four goals on its way to a 4-2 SUNY Athletic Conference men’s hockey win over Potsdam.

“I think we were a tale of two teams (Friday),” Plattsburgh coach Bob Emery said. “At times we played really well, and at times we were our old selves.

“In the first period, we weren’t emotional at all. And Potsdam was really emotional, and we took them too lightly. Second period, we came out of the locker room and turned it on.”

Dakota Mason started off the scoring surge 2:03 into the second period, and Alex Brenton made it 2-0 less than two minutes later. Connor Gorman scored at 14:12, and Brenton added his second of the night with just under four minutes left in the period.

After that, I think we got back to being complacent again,” Emery said. “We thought Potsdam would lie down.”

The Bears (6-11, 1-7 SUNYAC) pulled a little closer early in the third when Matt Thompson found the back of the net, and then Adam Place tallied at 17:16.

Mathieu Cadieux stopped 28 shots for the win, and Shane Talarico turned away 26 in Potsdam’s net.

Brenton’s two goals gave him eight on the season, tying him for the team lead and also matching his career high. Kevin Emmerling earned two assists, and Gorman also had a two-point game.

The Cardinals’ ongoing problems taking care of the puck in their own end showed up at times Friday.

“I don’t know when we’re going to learn,” Emery said. “We show them video, and it’s taking a long time to sink in. Basically it comes down to our hockey IQ needs to get better.”

No. 4 Plattsburgh (15-2-2, 8-0-2) is off today and will play its final regular-season road games next weekend at Geneseo and Brockport.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 13-14 Season 25

Alex Jensen having best season yet for Cards {Article courtesy of the Plattsburgh Press Republican 1/31/2014}

Alex Jensen finished last season with 14 points.

So far this season, he has 14 assists. And eight goals.

The Plattsburgh State men’s hockey junior put in some hard work during the off-season and shifted to the wing, and he’s having the best season of his career while leading the team in scoring.

“He’s been playing on a whole new level this year, compared to what I saw last year,” sophomore Connor Gorman said. “Obviously he was great last year, but he’s playing unbelievable this year. Quick, scoring, making plays.”

The fourth-ranked Cardinals (15-2-2, 8-0-2 SUNYAC) may have to get by without Jensen this weekend when they visit Geneseo and Brockport for their final regular-season road trip. Jensen said he sprained his MCL at Potsdam last Friday, and by early this week he wasn’t sure if he’d be able to play tonight.

Through 19 games, the Helsingborg, Sweden native has career highs in goals, assists and points, and his 22 points are six more than anyone else on the team.

Jensen credited his increased productivity to his work during the summer and to the play of his linemates.

“I was trying to get faster, so I worked on my explosiveness a little bit,” he said. “And then I shot a lot of pucks. So it’s paying off right now.”

Coach Bob Emery said Jensen requested a move from center to left wing this season, and the coach put him with Dillan Fox and Mark Constantine, who are second and third, respectively, on the team’s scoring list.

“Both Constantine and Dillan are pretty good guys at scoring goals,” Jensen said. “Dillan has somehow an ability to just find an open area. And he’ll be right there and just pop in a rebound. Or feed him a pass; you know he’s going to score the goal.

Constantine, he’s kind of a sniper, so when you find him in an open area, you know he’s going to do something with the puck.”

Both Emery and Gorman said Jensen hasn’t just contributed points he’s also shown leadership.

Alex has been strong, and he’s been a good leader all year, mostly by example,” Emery said. “We look for him to step up at the right time and get the big goal or get us going.”

Before this season, Jensen often skated on a line with his brother, Nick. Since Nick has been converted to a defenseman, Alex has tried to fill his shoes up front.

I’ve kinda taken on his role a little bit,” Alex said. “Like he was really good in the corners. And Constantine being as tiny as he is, I have to do a little bit more in the corners now. I took a little bit over (Nick’s) job.

And with Nick on the blue line, Alex has been easily outscoring his older brother.

I try not to give him a hard time,” Alex said. “But I get to score more goals, so I get a little bit of family bragging rights, I guess.

Knights hand Cards first SUNYAC loss {Article courtesy of the Plattsburgh Press Republican 2/1/2014}

Plattsburgh State is still on top of the SUNY Athletic Conference men’s hockey standings, but Geneseo now has the advantage.

David Ripple scored the go-ahead goal in the third period and the Knights won 5-3 Friday, handing the Cardinals their first conference loss of the season.

Plattsburgh (15-3-2, 8-1-2 SUNYAC) has 18 points — two more than Geneseo. But the Knights (14-4, 8-1) have seven games left while the Cardinals have five.

“We gotta take care of ourselves. There’s a lot of hockey left,” Plattsburgh coach Bob Emery said. “Geneseo’s in first place, so obviously we’re going to need help. But we’ve gotta take care of ourselves.”

No. 4 Plattsburgh plays Brockport tonight.

The Cardinals never led Friday. They came back from 1-goal deficits three times but fell behind for good with 5:55 left.

I think we played really hard; I give our guys a lot of credit,” Emery said. “But we just gotta learn to play smarter. This is our third loss this year, and in all the losses, we weren’t prepared to win the game 1-0.

Chewy (Mathieu Cadieux) made some good saves, but he didn’t play well (Friday). We gotta find a way to win those games for him and for ourselves.

Brian Haude earned the win for Geneseo with 39 saves, and Cadieux had 31 for Plattsburgh.

The teams traded goals in the second period, with Ryan Stanimir tallying at 14:24 to give the Knights a 3-2 lead. The Cardinals tied it for the third time 3:15 into the third period on a goal by Barry Roytman.

But Ripple made it 4-3 with a power-play goal assisted by Justin Scharfe and Jack Caradonna, and Scharfe later added an empty-netter.

“It was a highly emotional game, back and forth,” Emery said. “We ended up being down (after two periods), and we got a great goal in the third and we were right back in it on the road. And then we take an undisciplined penalty.”

Stanimir finished with three points for the Knights. Zachary Vit and Stephen Collins scored their first two goals.

Ryan Farnan and Connor Gorman provided Plattsburgh’s second-period goals.

Leading scorer Alex Jensen tested his injured knee in the morning skate but could not play, and Emery did not expect him to be in the lineup tonight either.

The Golden Eagles beat Potsdam 4-1 Friday.

This one hurts, but we’ve got another big game (today) — our final regular-season road game,” Emery said. “We gotta find a way to win, and it’s not going to be easy.

"He didnt play well...." Harsh sound bite for the media.

Chewy would be the first to admit that. Geneseo played like it was the SUNYAC Finals. Emotion will beat talent any day. The knights have 3 more SUNYAC road games left including at Oswego while Plattsburgh has the last 4 of 5 at home...way to early to be putting Geneseo in that top spot.

I thought that the Cards had continuing difficulties getting the puck out of their own zone and thru the neutral zone. Overall I felt that, and perhaps spotty play by Chewey made the difference.

Nonetheless, GO CARDS !!!

Did you attend last night? How did Genny treat the fans in red? ( not trying to start/ presume anything, just curious because it was a big game...)

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 13-14 Season 25

Last night's loss makes tonight's game huge. Brockport is no pushover and give good teams a hard time. Geneseo is a very talented offensive team. Their top 6 forwards are as good as anyone's. Their top 4 defensemen are also offensive-minded. The question mark for them remains in goal and their depth up front. I thought we made their goalie look good and he certainly used the old "net off the pegs" trick a couple of times to relieve pressure.

Cards really missed Alex Jensen as well. It was a noticeable absence. Time to regroup and put some wins together coming down the stretch. We're still in good shape Pool C-wise. With Norwich losing and Babson getting a tie, we got some help. I still see the East top 8 this way:
1. Plattsburgh
2. Norwich
3. Babson
4. Williams
5. Geneseo
6. Trinity
7. Oswego
8. New England or UMASS-Boston

I noticed the peg trick as well, funny didnt seem to happen when Chewy was at that end.Platty didnt finish to well and haude played better than usual.agree they have some good forwards, and their dmen, particularly solomon like to step up/rush. Genny had that extra step it seemed, and the crowd seemed to be into it big time?? Bport played Oswego tough at home they are not a pushover and will compete at first but may slow as the game goes on due to depth. as for rankings not sold on Trinity?? maybe Williams, time will tell..whats up with Jensen??

Of course. Great time as always. Very into the game. As I said it was a playoff atmosphere. For the most part they were pretty knowledgeable.

The net trick is ridiculous. House fought the puck on some of the easiest shots and rebound control was slim to none, but then would make a tremendous save. So up and down. No AJ was huge. Im not sure if the camera showed it but on the eng Plattsburgh wanted to gain to zone but there was a Cardinal stuck in the Geneseo zone with an Ice Knight stick stuck in his blade. It was that kind of night. Some bad bounces and some great emotion from Geneseo. The right team won last night. Great game.
