Plattsburgh State Hockey 13-14 Season 25

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 13-14 Season 25

The one thing I will add to this debate is that I was very impressed with Platty's shot blocking in the game last night. It seems every time Norwich sees them they block more and more shots. The Cadets had the offensive possession and (obviously) shot advantage throughout the night but the Cards weathered the storm. Also I think the goal scored in the first few minutes of the game put Norwich back on their heels just like when St. Anselm came to Kreitzberg earlier this year and 'Wick had to scramble just to salvage a tie in that contest. I give lots of credit to the Cardinals but it was far from a dominating win, both teams will come away from that game with a lot to work on in practice..

No, I am just not an idiot. I can see when my team is getting outplayed, and what they need to do better.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 13-14 Season 25

Plattsburgh's MO for years has been shot blocking, clogging passing lanes and tying up sticks in the slot. They are the best I've seen do it on a consistent basis in Division III.

They did it last night. and won.

I agree, their MO also includes better than average skill, conditioning and line cycling which is often enough to "bully" through lesser opponents, but when they meet quality teams in their "peer" group, it comes down to TEAM WORK & Leadership - yesterday they had it.

On the other side of the coin, another "MO" of Plattsburgh has been complacency and a lack of respect for some opponents (those they don't view as "peers), particularly once they get a couple goal lead (not to mention the dreaded 3 goal lead).

I thought it was a good game of hockey and we enjoyed it tremendously. It is always a real test to play at Norwich and last night was no different. Two good teams battling it out. I am very proud of the Cards for their efforts to take the win. Who knows if or when we will meet again but it's always great hockey to watch!

Cardinals trying not to try too hard on power play {Article courtesy of the Plattsburgh Press Republican 1/17/2014}

One of Plattsburgh State’s goals for the second semester is to improve its power play. Rather than having a laundry list of things to do to make that happen, the Cardinals are trying to keep it simple.

I think sometimes on the power play people try to do too much, and I think that’s what we’re going through right now on our power play,” Plattsburgh coach Bob Emery said.

The Cardinals (13-1-2) play two nonconference road games this weekend, starting tonight at Middlebury College, which ranks eighth in Division III men’s hockey with a 28.6 percent success rate on the power play.

Plattsburgh is 16-for-79 (20.3 percent) on the power play this season, which puts it at 28th in the country. Defenseman Barry Roytman leads the team with four power-play goals, while Mark Constantine and Dillan Fox each have three.

Not scoring when you have the advantage can get frustrating.

I think it kind of gets in our heads a little bit,” Fox said. “You get a little more time and space out there and you kinda get a little bit more patient, and that can work against you.

“Sometimes when you’re not working harder than you do 5-on-5, you think you can kind of take your foot off the gas, but sometimes it (needs to be) the opposite.”

The Cardinals have started to get more consistent results recently. They’ve notched a power-play goal in each of their last three games, including Mark Constantine’s tally during Tuesday’s 4-2 win at Norwich.

Fox said sometimes the key is just crashing the net and getting dirty goals, and both he and Alex Jensen stressed simplicity.

We need to outman them on the puck,” said Jensen, who has two power-play goals. “We’re five guys on the ice; they’re four or three. We have to be two guys against one all the time. If we do that and move the puck, move our feet, I think that’s the biggest thing. And, of course, we gotta keep it simple. The more we try to make it complicated, the harder it’s going to be for ourselves.”

The third-ranked Cardinals have already had a look at both of this weekend’s opponents. They beat Middlebury 3-1 in the championship game of the PrimeLink Great Northern Shootout, and while they haven’t played No. 12 Williams, the Ephs were at Stafford Ice Arena for the Buck Supply Winter Classic two weeks ago.

The Panthers (6-4-2) lost three straight to end the first semester and are 3-1 since the break.

I think we were fortunate to get out to a 3-0 lead against Middlebury the first time. Because it was an even game in the last two periods,” Emery said. “So we know we gotta play our best game to win.”

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 13-14 Season 25

Pretty good effort by Cards against a fired-up Middlebury team last night. Still a few too many turnovers, but Cards gutted it out. Panthers would have some pretty good spurts, but Cards seemed in control for the most part. It doesn't hurt having Cadieux back there either ! Surviving a lengthy 5 on 3 was the turning point. Midd looked a little chippy at times which is sort of uncharacteristic. I think they really wanted that one.

On to Williams against a better team/goaltender. If Cards can win this one they will finish 8-1 OOC and be in very good shape nationally. A couple of guys got dinged up last night, so we'll see if they're out there tonight. Keep it rollin' !!

PSU men's hockey doubles up Panthers -- {Article courtesy of the Plattsburgh Press Republican 1/18/2014}

Connor Gorman and Alex Jensen tallied third-period goals and Plattsburgh State beat Middlebury 4-2 in nonconference men’s hockey Friday.

The Cardinals couldn’t get much separation from the Panthers, who kept answering when Plattsburgh started to pull away.

I give Middlebury a lot of credit. They won a lot of 50/50 pucks; they battled,” Plattsburgh coach Bob Emery said. “Their coach called them on their tenacity before the game, and they brought it (Friday). They caused us to make a lot of mistakes.“If it wasn’t for Chewy (goalie Mathieu Cadieux) in the second period, we don’t get out of there.”

The third-ranked Cardinals (14-1-2), who have won four straight, visit Williams today.

Sophomore defenseman Anthony Calabrese registered his first career goal late in the first period to put Plattsburgh ahead. Michael Radisa made it 2-0 16 seconds into the second, but Middlebury’s Derek Pimentel responded two-and-a-half minutes later.

The Panthers held an 11-7 shot advantage in the second, and Emery said they gained a lot of momentum from their power play. Plattsburgh took four penalties in the period, including three in a 23-second span.

We had the same problems we’ve had all along — turnovers in the defensive zone and the neutral zone,” Emery said. “I think we play that way because we know we have Chewy, but that’s not an excuse. We gotta find a way to make the game simpler. “But we relied on skill (Friday), not smarts. And skill won the game, starting with the skill in net.”

Gorman’s power-play marker at 2:35 of the third gave Plattsburgh a two-goal cushion, but once again, Middlebury (6-5-2) came right back at the other end. Louis Belisle made it 3-2 at 3:33.

Alex Jensen scored on the breakaway with 1:02 left in the game to put it away.

Some of our players made great sacrifices (Friday), don’t get me wrong,” Emery said. “We had good leadership from some players but not all of them.”
Cadieux made 28 saves for Plattsburgh, and Nick BonDurant had 25 for Middlebury.

No. 12 Williams will be the Cardinals’ second ranked opponent this week (they beat Norwich on Tuesday). The Ephs defeated Manhattanville 4-1 Friday.

“We’re gonna see one of the best teams in the NESCAC,” Emery said. “We’ve got our work cut out for us. We gotta have a good, smart defensive hockey game.”

Plattsburgh State falls to Williams in men's hockey -- {Article courtesy of the Plattsburgh Press Republican 1/19/2014}

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass — The Plattsburgh State men’s hockey team suffered just its second loss of the season Saturday, and this one was much like the first.

Like Hobart on Jan. 4, Williams scored two goals in quick succession in the second period and the Cardinals never got back in it, falling 5-1.

“I thought we had a solid effort,” Plattsburgh coach Bob Emery said. “We’ve had a lot of turnover problems this year. The two games we’ve lost have served us right for bad turnovers.

The first two goals (Saturday) were totally because of bad turnovers.”

Luke Stickel scored the first one at 9:20 after a giveaway, and 59 seconds later, Sam Gray made it 2-0.

Emery likes to say that the worst goal to give up is the first one.

We gave them that first goal (Saturday) on a silver platter,” he said. “And there was no looking back for them.

Craig Kitto gave No. 12 Williams (10-2-2) another goal on a breakaway late in the second period.

Williams became the first team this season to tally more than three goals against Plattsburgh, although two were empty-netters. The third-ranked Cardinals (14-2-2) pulled their goalie with just under three minutes left in the game and came within two when Mark Constantine scored. But Kitto quickly put a puck in the empty net and did it again a minute later.

The Cardinals fired 20 shots in the third period and had a number of good scoring chances that were turned away by Sean Dougherty, who finished with 35 saves. They did put a puck past him with 7:33 left, but the goal was waved off due to a high stick.

Mathieu Cadiuex made 16 stops for Plattsburgh.

I thought we did a good job in all areas (Saturday), just take away those two mistakes,” Emery said. “It was almost justice the way we’ve been playing all year, the way we turn it over, that we lose the game.

Emery had said this would be the Cardinals’ toughest week of the season, and after beating Norwich and Middlebury on the road, they ended the trip on a sour note.

If you had asked me going into the week if we win 2-of-3, I’d be pretty happy,” Emery said. “But when you win the first two and have a chance to win all three, I think it’s tough to swallow.

Guess the locals were out preventing the barn burnings (I don't think the students are back yet). This does not bode well if Williams gets to/wants to host an NCAA 1st/QF round game.

They let Amherst host over Plattsburgh..... still sad to see such a rising program with a classy head coach go unrecognized in the community. Students on break or not, for a top team its pathetic. Hats off to the purple cows.

Last night's win is certainly an impressive one for Williams but im still curious to see what happens over the next month with the Ephs and seeing if they can avoid their notorious second half swoon.

The NESCAC is very competitive this year with Trinity, Bowdoin, Colby and Amherst all seemingly fielding solid clubs. Plus even though they are a .500 team right now, you can never count out Middlebury.
