Plattsburgh State Hockey 13-14 Season 25

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 13-14 Season 25

Second time I've watched Plattsburgh live and they are a fun team to watch. They play an almost NBA style, putting 3 guys low, suck you down so the points are wide open. A quick pass to the D and a bomb comes in from the outside. If you do not play smart, disciplined hockey against the Cards, you coming out with an L.

Like I said, fun. Unless they hit a pot hole in the next 2 months, they'll be #1 seed East.

A lackluster performance by the Cards against Hobart. Matt made some great saves, but unfortunately he missed two easy ones.

Oh well.

PSTV can do a lot of things, but their most frequent request from today was one they could not grant.

Cards stunned by Hobart in Winter Classic {Article courtesy of the Plattsburgh Press Republican 1/5/2014}

Hobart faced two unbeaten men’s hockey teams this weekend and took down both of them.

Plattsburgh State was the victim Saturday, as the Statesmen grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first period and won the Buck Supply Winter Classic championship game 3-1 at Stafford Ice Arena.

It’s real disappointing,” Plattsburgh coach Bob Emery said. “I give Hobart a lot of credit. They wanted the game more than us. I thought we played hard. They just sacrificed like nobody’s business.”

Williams claimed third place by defeating Hamilton 4-3 in overtime.

Hobart goalie Lino Chimienti made 39 saves, keeping the Cardinals scoreless for 59 minutes and 20 seconds, and was named the tournament’s MVP. The Statesmen (4-4-4) went 0-4-2 in their last six games of the first semester but started the second by defeating No. 7 Williams on Friday and then knocking off the top-ranked team in Division III.

“Plattsburgh is a very dynamic team, and the key was keeping them off the board. That was it,” Hobart coach Mark Taylor said. “We just wanted to limit their skill and limit their talent up front. And that’s just playing tight and give ‘em nothing and hopefully they give us enough chances to come back the other way.”

Those chances came early on for the Statesmen. Mitch Beyer put them ahead 7:58 into the game, and 19 seconds later, Bo Webster made it 2-0. It was the first time this season Plattsburgh (10-1-2) had trailed by two goals. After falling behind in just one game in the first semester, the Cardinals trailed in both contests this weekend.

The Cardinals expected Hobart to come out with a lot of energy, and Emery said they matched that intensity well.

The first eight minutes we played great,” he said. “I thought we played hard all game. But unfortunately, the way hockey is played today, defense wins games. And they were a better defensive team than we were (Saturday).”

Plattsburgh outshot Hobart 40-28, including a 16-8 advantage in the second period. But the Cardinals didn’t get many second-chance opportunities. Emery said the Statesmen did a great job of keeping them away from loose pucks in front of the net.

Alex Jensen was stopped on a good short-handed chance in the third, and with about 5:30 left, a Plattsburgh shot from the point hit the inside of the post but stayed out. Then Hobart’s Mac Olson put the game away with 2:26 left.

Anthony Botting scored for Plattsburgh.

Mathieu Cadieux made 25 saves and also stopped two breakaways by coming out of the crease to poke check Hobart players.

I feel bad for Chewy; he’d like to have that first one back,” Emery said of his goalie. “But we didn’t step up for him. We didn’t step up as a team like Chewy stepped up for us all year.”

Alex Brenton was Plattsburgh’s only representative on the All-Tournament Team.

In the consolation game, George Hunkele chipped in the puck 56 seconds into overtime to lift Williams over Hamilton. The Ephs (6-1-2) had to rally twice in the third period, with Zander Masucci tying the game 13 seconds before the horn. Sam Gray and Frankie Mork had Williams’ other goals, and Noah Klag made 18 saves.

Robbie Murden scored twice for Hamilton (3-4-1).

I hardly think it was a goaltending issue. You are basically suggesting he should have had a shutout, so they would have won. If you can only score one goal, you don't deserve to win. Because the team has a stellar goalie, the players are relying too much on him and have become a little lax.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 13-14 Season 25

Hobart in both games was a shot blocking machine. They did a great job of getting in the lanes and I did not see a single flamingo out there.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 13-14 Season 25

Hobart played a real smart game and deserved the win. As was said, got the monkey off our backs and now they'll go from here. Prep. time now for Sid. and Castle. Still a lot of hockey to be played and the Cards will just get better from this one. No time to hang heads. :)

Yes good comment
1 or 2 goals usually not enough to win

This was prophetic. I thought Hobart played extremely smart. Cadieux was a little off and the rest of the team did not do much to pick him up. Hobart played with the Cards for 60 minutes, something most teams aren't able to do. Great effort and a well-deserved win for the Statesmen.

Cards look to rebound after first loss {Article courtesy of the Plattsburgh Press Republican 1/10/2014}

After going the whole first semester without a loss, Plattsburgh State had its streak come to jarring end in the first weekend of the second semester.

“There was a bunch of sad faces in the locker room after (a 3-1 loss to Hobart last Saturday),” forward Alex Jensen said. “I think this entire week is about revenge because we’re not used to losing this year. It’s a big change, actually. It was a completely different mood than after a normal game.”

It’s a mood the Cardinals (10-1-2) hope they don’t experience much more. They look to get back on track as they host Skidmore tonight and Castleton State on Saturday.

“Well it’s our first major piece of adversity for the year, so it is a good test for us,” Plattsburgh coach Bob Emery said. “I’m always a big believer in adversity is good for you, depending how you come out of it.

“You know, not only was that Hobart game a big, important game, but it was also a home game. With our tough road schedule coming up, we gotta really do a good job here this coming weekend at home.”

The Thoroughbreds (6-4-4) come into Stafford Ice Arena on a three-game winning streak that includes a 3-1 victory over Castleton on Tuesday. In the first semester, they took Norwich to overtime before falling 3-2.

Aaron Beck leads the team with 11 goals and 15 points, and five other players have reached double digits in points. Freshman Jack McDonald has had most of the starts in net, recording a 2.46 goals-against average and a .919 save percentage.

Castleton (7-6-1) split a pair of games last weekend before falling to fellow ECAC East team Skidmore. The Spartans knocked off the Cardinals last year 5-2.

The Cardinals are in the middle of a stretch of seven nonconference games. They’ll face Norwich, Middlebury and Williams next week before returning to SUNY Athletic Conference play Jan. 24. These games could have an impact on Plattsburgh’s postseason outlook.

Well you know, the goal is obviously to make the NCAA tournament, and if you can take care of business in your nonleague games, that really helps out a great deal,” Emery said.

Jensen leads No. 3 Plattsburgh with 17 points, including 13 assists, and his linemates Dillan Fox (8-5-13) and Mark Constantine (5-6-11) are not far behind. The offense has been humming along, but Jensen and Emery both said that the defense needs to get better.

Our D-zone hasn’t been very good this year,” Jensen said. “So instead of maybe scoring four goals a game, we can maybe cut it down to three or two and only let in zero or one goal. I think that should be the focus.”

The Cardinals may be without Constantine this weekend; Emery said he suffered a concussion when he was hit into the boards against Hobart.

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 13-14 Season 25

Strong offense, poor defense for PSU in victory {Article courtesy of the Plattsburgh Press Republican 1/11/2014}

Bob Emery is about ready to stop preaching better defense to his Plattsburgh State men’s hockey team.

Not because the message has gotten through, but because he thinks it’s falling on deaf ears.

The Cardinals gave up three goals and multiple breakaways Friday but found the net one more time than Skidmore did for a 4-3 nonconference victory at Stafford Ice Arena.

Again, it was another great offensive effort for us, and it was a terrible defensive effort,” Emery said. “Our puck movement at certain times was disgraceful, to say the least.

“They’re not listening to me about taking care of the puck, so I don’t know who they’re going to listen to. As a coach sometimes you can over-coach, and I’m not going to say anything now.”

The Cardinals allowed more than one goal just three times in the first semester but have done so in all three of their second-semester games. They host Castleton State tonight.

Barry Roytman tallied a power-play goal late in the second period to put the third-ranked Cardinals (11-1-2) ahead, and they kept the puck out of their net in the third period. But that didn’t necessarily mean they cleaned up their play. During a five minute power play, they coughed up the puck and gave the Thoroughbreds (6-5-4) a short-handed breakaway chance.

Plattsburgh goalie Spencer Finney stacked his pads to deny the shot, but on another breakaway in the first period, Marc Cibelli beat him glove-side for Skidmore’s first goal. And later in that period, Anthony Bird poked the puck away from a Plattsburgh defenseman and was off to the races. His shot sailed high.

Plattsburgh blueliner Anthony Calabrese said those golden opportunities were due to “miscommunications and things like that.”

“We gotta bear down and talk more,” the sophomore added. “We definitely shouldn’t be giving up breakaways at all. This should not be occurring at all.

“We’re a great defensive team, and we gotta get better.”

Finney finished with 19 saves in his first start with the Cardinals after transferring from Colgate during the semester break. Senior Mathieu Cadieux sat out for the first time all season, and Emery said he just wanted to get a look at the sophomore newcomer in a game.

Finney allowed three goals in the first 19:09 but was perfect from there on.

I don’t think he had a chance on any of those goals,” Emery said. “He hasn’t played a game in a while, and we hung him out to dry. That’s the story of our team this year. We leave our goalie hanging out to dry.

The Cardinals got off to a great start, taking a lead 43 seconds in on Michael Radisa’s goal, but by late in the first period, they had fallen behind for the third time in as many games. Cibelli tied it, and Aaron Beck gave Skidmore a 2-1 edge at 16:16.

Dakota Mason banged one in for Plattsburgh a minute before intermission.

Calabrese was credited with a goal in the second period, although he said Josh Koerner actually tipped it in, and Beck answered for Skidmore four minutes later when he jumped on a loose puck in the slot and fired.

Roytman’s game-winner came 2:26 before the second intermission.

Jack McDonald made 48 saves for the Thoroughbreds. The Cardinals held a 52-22 advantage in shots, including 19-3- in the third.

We don’t give up a lot of chances, but when we give ‘em up, we give up great ones,” Emery said.

VIDEO: Cardinal Q&A: Bob Emery & Alex Jensen See Bob on the ice!!

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 13-14 Season 25

Jensen's hat trick sends Cardinals over Spartans {Article courtesy of the Plattsburgh Press Republican 1/12/2014}

After being uncharacteristically generous to start the second semester, the Cardinals were back to their usual stingy selves Saturday.

Plattsburgh State allowed just one goal and Alex Jensen recorded a hat trick in a 6-1 nonconference men’s hockey victory against Castleton State. The game marked the return of Steve Moffat, a longtime Plattsburgh assistant who made his first visit to Stafford Ice Arena as an opposing head coach.

Plattsburgh (12-1-2) gave up eight goals in its previous three games but played better in the defensive zone Saturday.

“We really stressed (Saturday) we were going to try to win the game 1-0 if we had to,” Plattsburgh coach Bob Emery said. “And we weren’t quite there, but we kept our opponent to one.

“I just thought the players were more self-responsible of pucks in our own end.”

The third-ranked Cardinals have a rare midweek game coming up next; they’ll visit Norwich on Tuesday.

Plattsburgh’s Michael Radisa tied Saturday’s game with a wrist shot from the left circle early in the second period, and then the Cardinals pulled ahead due to a bit of a lucky break. Jensen raced in on a short-handed chance, and when Castleton goalie Mark Hochman came out to challenge him, both went sprawling to the ice. The puck kept going — straight into the open net.

“I think that was the turning point of the game,” Moffat said.

Indeed, it didn’t take Plattsburgh long to build a cushion. The Spartans almost killed off a 5-on-3 in the middle of the period, but Graham Yeo tallied his first collegiate goal 26 seconds before the penalties expired. Shortly afterward, Jensen netted his second of the game.

Michael Cassidy made it 5-1 in the third, and Jensen completed the hat trick in the final minute with the help of a nice pass from his brother Nick. The elder Jensen also assisted on Alex’s first goal.

After getting a night off Friday, Mathieu Cadieux earned the win by making 23 saves.

Sloppiness in their own end cost the Cardinals last Saturday against Hobart, and they didn’t want that to happen again.

It was just we played with a little bit more passion, I guess,” Dillan Fox said. “We didn’t want to lose. That first loss kind of hurt. So it started in our back end, and we were able to just bring it up from there.”

Charles Bando had the Spartans’ (8-7-1) goal on a power play in the first period. Hochman finished with 37 stops.

Castleton’s first-year coach acknowledged it was strange to be with the visiting team after playing for and then coaching the Cardinals.

“I don’t think I’d be human if I came in here and didn’t think it’d be weird,” Moffat said. “It certainly was different making a right onto the bench instead of a left.” He added that he was touched by a video tribute Plattsburgh played before the game.

“Steve’s like a brother to me, and to see him get a head coaching job that he really wanted so bad, I’m proud … of him,” Emery said. “It’s one of those games where you still want to win, but you’re happy he’s got that program up and going. He’s going to take great strides there at Castleton.”
