Channel 5 did a good job last night covering the Cards/Castleton game and the tribute to Steve M. The crowd responded very positively too. It just seemed so odd to see him on the opposite end. Still miss him.
Not only does Plattsburgh State have three games in five days, but it also faces three high-level opponents in their own rinks.
The Cardinals' busy week starts with a visit to Kreitzberg Arena tonight to take on No. 5 Norwich. They play Middlebury and Williams this weekend.
"We’re going into our toughest week of the year here," Plattsburgh coach Bob Emery said. "Not too many times are we going to have three games in a week that tough."
The Cadets (10-2-2) got surprised by Massachusetts-Boston 4-2 over the weekend. Their other loss was to Wisconsin-Superior in the PrimeLink Great Northern Shootout consolation game at Stafford Ice Arena.
They have a large senior class but are led in scoring by three senior forwards: Shane Gorman (6-15-21), Travis Janke (6-14-20) and Chris Dusznyski (11-5-16). Norwich doesn't give up many goals — it's tied for fifth in Division III with 1.64 goals allowed per game.
"They’re at home; they’ve got a lot going for them," Emery said. "We gotta go over there and try to play our best game to have a chance to win, believe me. We gotta get good goaltending, gotta play good defense to win that game, for sure."
No. 3 Plattsburgh (12-1-2) will be meeting its first ranked opponent of the second semester. This segment of the season has gotten off to a bit of a rocky start for the Cardinals, but they swept Skidmore and Castleton State last weekend after falling to Hobart Jan. 4.
"Norwich is always a big game when it’s on our schedule. It’s one of those games you kind of look at from the beginning," Platttsburgh forward Dillan Fox said. "But every game is big right now. We dropped one and it stung pretty bad, so we don’t want to do that again. We started off this stretch with two wins, and hopefully we keep it going."
The Cardinals rank second in scoring defense, averaging 1.47 goals allowed on the season. But that number has been higher in recent games, and they have at times given up numerous quality scoring chances.
Against Castleton last Saturday, they gave up one first-period goal and then held the Spartans scoreless the rest of the way. Emery wants them to bring that kind of defensive effort every night.
"We have a good team," Fox said. "And I think some nights we think we have a little better team than we do sometimes. So we just gotta keep it simple sometimes. I think that’s what we did well (Saturday)."

Man was that an ugly game. We dominated the first 5-6 minutes, only to have nearly the entire team just stop skating for the entire rest of the period. Thankfully we had a lucky goal right off, and then a beauty on the power play, but because we stopped skating, we gave up two penalty's and a goal on one of them. The second was more of the same - I am not sure what was wrong with the team, but we only had 4 shots on goal in the second period (11 overall). Thankfully 2 went in. I am not sure if they were content with that, and if they expect that they can duplicate this every game, but they looked bad. Norwich out shot them 2-1, and I thought that was very representative of how the game went in terms of chances and possession. Granted this was the first game I've been able to make it to this year, but they did not look like a team that should be ranked in the top 10, never mind one that stands a chance in the NCAA.
I really didn't think it was that ugly. A great majority of Norwich shots in the first period were on the powerplay. The total shots ended up 28-20 Norwich. There was a lot of defense by both teams, along with a lot of blocked shots. The second period shots were 9-5 with the difference again being on the powerplay. Third period shots were 9-7. The important thing is they made the best of the 20 shots on goal they had!Man was that an ugly game. The Plattsburgh State men’s hockey team began a week of difficult road games by beating Norwich at Kreitzberg Arena for the first time since 2008.
The third-ranked Cardinals scored two goals in each of the first two periods Tuesday as they defeated the fifth-ranked Cadets 4-2.
“Can’t beat that win,” Plattsburgh coach Bob Emery said. “That’s a tough place to win. Some of the best teams I’ve had had a hard time winning there.
“They play hard at home. They forecheck well at home.”
Plattsburgh (13-1-2) visits Middlebury and Williams this weekend.
Mark Constantine, back after missing two games due to a concussion, put the Cardinals in front 2-1 with a power-play goal late in the first period. They pulled away in the second, when Ryan Farnan and Barry Roytman both made good plays to get the puck to a teammate.
Farnan fed Zach Popp for a goal at 7:38, and Alex Brenton one-timed Roytman’s pass into the net at 12:22.
The Cadets (10-3-2) pulled a little closer 5:39 into the third on a goal by Travis Janke, but the Cardinals kept them at bay from there.
Kyle Hall netted Plattsburgh’s first goal just 1:21 into the game, and Shane Gorman scored Norwich’s first-period goal.
“If we had a negative in the game, it was turnovers in the defensive zone,” Emery said. “But we did a great job making up for the turnovers. We blocked a lot of shots, and they didn’t get a lot of second shots. We did a good job clearing pucks.”
The only other time Plattsburgh beat the Cadets in their own rink was Jan. 8, 2008.
Mathieu Cadieux stopped 26 of the 28 shots he faced in the Cardinals’ net.
“He made all the saves we asked him to,” Emery said. “Obviously your goalie needs to be your best player in the game of hockey, and he was (Tuesday).”
Norwich starter Matic Marinsek allowed three goals on nine shots and was replaced in the second period by Parker Carroll, who made 10 saves.

The shots were 28-20.........your math skills seem lacking....that is not 2-1 !They are a very good defensive team. We are too. We got out shot 2-1 and completely out played. I was sitting with 4 Norwich season ticket holders who all thought that it may have been the worst game Norwich played this year. I will admit a bit of divided loyalties having had Norwich season tickets in my family for 10 years, but my wife and I are Plattsburgh grads and with the exception of last year have been to almost every home (and some away) games over the last 6 years. I've seen what a national championship caliber team is (Norwich in 2010, Plattsburgh in 2009), and based on what I saw last night, neither is it.

Hmmmmmm! Plattsburgh outshot Hobart 40-12 and suffered their only loss of the year..SOG does not tell the whole story. At the game the scoreboard said 36-18. I am not sure where the difference is accounted for. Same question though. How many games do you get out-shot 28-20 and expect to win against a decent team?
