In My Opinion: Support gave boost to broadcasting

As many of you know, this is my 40th and final year of broadcasting Plattsburgh State Cardinal Hockey.

It’s been quite a run!

I’ve broadcast games for every Plattsburgh State hockey coach, from John Corker through Bob Emery.

I’ve broadcast the exploits of just about every player to wear the red and white from A-Z.

In the more than 1,000 games were Prime Link, ECAC-West, SUNYAC and NCAA championships — I’ve seen and broadcast them all.

I think my favorite championship memory is the 2001 NCAA Championship at Rochester Institute of Technology.

It wasn’t just because RIT was undefeated going into the game, had beaten Plattsburgh decidedly 8-2 earlier in the year and was on their home ice, but because I had suffered a stroke in 2000 and wasn’t even sure I’d be able to broadcast games ever again. With the assistance of speech therapists from both the Clinton County Health Department and Plattsburgh State, I was able to recover my ability to speak again.

I also need to thank Coach Bob Emery, who had assistant Steve Moffat drop off some videotapes of games, at my home, so that I could practice. So the 2001 NCAA Championship was special to Plattsburgh State, as well as to me.

These last 40 years have gone by in the speed of a Brendon Hodge slap shot.*There are so many, many folks to thank and too many to mention, individually by name.

Thank yous include coaches, assistant coaches, players, athletic directors, sport information directors, along with their assistants, trainers, student managers, rink managers and personnel.

I also need to thank my broadcast partners along the way, including John Mayette, Brad Ott and my current partner for the last dozen years, Rob Knowles. You all have made me a better hockey announcer.

I want to thank Prime Link, Fredonia, Buffalo State, Cortland, Oswego and Brockport, as well as Middlebury College, for taking time prior to or during the games to recognize and acknowledge my 40 years of hockey broadcasting.

Last, but certainly not least, Plattsburgh State fans, thank you. I couldn’t have done it without your support, kind words and gestures. You don’t know how much that meant to me. You are the greatest!

In summary, “You’ve had me all the way,” but it’s time “to stick a fork in the Duck ... I’m done.”

Thanks for 40 years of memories.

OK, wipe the tears; and Ducky....we need to hear a few more utensils coming out of the drawer before you turn off your mic.

I can't count the number of times that Ducky yelled "SCORE" so loud that the sound would really go off momentarily!

I like how he would shout it for either team. Last weekend, I was listening to WNYO at work for the Geneseo game. Definitely a quality broadcast, but when I couldn't be right next to the radio because I had a customer, I only knew when Oswego scored... I missed all of 2 of Geneseo's goals because the PBP didn't change his tone (perhaps except in lowering it) when a Geneseo goal was scored. When I listen to WIRY at work, I know when either team has scored because Ducky shouts Goal for both teams.

Hope someone can find the video stream of what many of us consider Ducky's greatest call, THE GOAL, in the year 2000 NCAA quarter final game against Middlebury in overtime.

No matter whether the play by play guy worked for a small local radio station such as WIRY or one of the huge networks, there was and is only one Ducky. You are leaving HUGE shoes to fill. We're gonna miss ya Ducky!

Re: Plattsburgh State Hockey 13-14 Season 25

I am headed to the PSU vs. Oswego game on Saturday night and this is my first PSU game since I moved to Plattsburgh. Just wondering what I should expect? I have tickets in Section L, not quite sure where that is located in the arena, maybe someone knows? Anywho, what time should I arrive? Obviously I have tickets, but would prefer not to have to walk from downtown or something crazy like that (I have heard that the Oswego game is a bit crazy for the crowd being a big rival). Any help would be greatly appreciated! :)

Wear green and gold and you'll be welcomed by all

I don't know many in green and gold that have ever had the pleasure of uttering the following phrase in relation to Stafford:

or did they finally start selling (non-season) tickets before game day?

Fraid not. They announced during tonight's (one-sided ) game against Cortland that general admission tickets would go on sale at the Stafford Ice Arena box office beginning st 5.30 PM Saturday.
Too bad PSUC cannot bring their ticketing system into the 21st century ala Norwich or Oswego.

I got my tickets through my boss who is a season ticket holder ;)

Congrats and Good Luck Ducky... A true gentleman and mentor to the youngsters he shared the press box with over the years... It was nice to catch up and reminisce your last visit to the Steve Levy Press Box. That corner chair will always be there for you if you find yourself passing through town.

Oswego's late goal leaves Cardinals in No. 2 slot {Article courtesy of the Plattsburgh Press Republican 2/23/2014}

Brandon Adams squeezed the puck past Mathieu Cadieux’s pad with 2:32 left in Saturday’s third period, and with that Oswego kept archrival Plattsburgh from claiming a share of the SUNY Athletic Conference men’s hockey regular-season title.

After a frenetic second period in which Plattsburgh led twice but the teams ended up tied, Adams’ goal was the only one of the third, giving the Lakers a 4-3 win at Stafford Ice Arena.

“I thought we played hard; I thought we played well. But we gotta find ways to win games, not lose them,” Plattsburgh coach Bob Emery said. “And we gotta find some more gamers in the locker room — guys that when the going gets tough, when we’re battling near the end of games, we can find to pull it out.

“This year we haven’t had a lot of guys that can pull games out late.”

Plattsburgh (19-4-2, 12-2-2 SUNYAC) dropped into second place in the conference, two points behind Geneseo. The Cardinals will be the second seed in the conference tournament.

Saturday’s close contest was a typical Plattsburgh-Oswego game, but this was not a typical season for the 12th-ranked Lakers, who finished in third place. Oswego (17-6-2, 10-5-1) dropped home games to Geneseo and Brockport last weekend and then barely got past Potsdam Friday. It won Saturday despite ongoing goaltending issues and a battered roster.

For us to tie it up and then get the one late, just a gutty performance,” Oswego coach Ed Gosek said. “We got a lot of guys banged up. No excuses, but we found a way with the amount of D we have out and forwards that we have out. The guys that were in there, they gave us everything they had. So I’m proud of them for the effort.”

After a fast-paced but scoreless first period, the second was much more eventful. Michael Radisa came around the net and stuffed the puck in to put No. 4 Plattsburgh up 26 seconds in.

Less than two minutes later, Plattsburgh’s Ryan Farnan delivered a neutral-zone hit that sent Alex Botten to the ice. Farnan was given a contact-to-the-head major and a game misconduct and had to leave the game.

During the Lakers’ five-minute power play, Mike Montagna tied the game with a shot from the left side, and Andrew Barton deflected the puck in for a 2-1 lead. Botten, who was helped off the ice but soon returned, assisted on Barton’s goal.

Radisa broke in and lifted the puck over Oswego goalie Justin Gilbert to make it 2-2 at 8:27, and 53 seconds after that, Alex Brenton scored from the left circle, putting the Cardinals back ahead. Gilbert was pulled in favor of Matt Zawadzki after Brenton’s goal.

The Cardinals enjoyed the lead for almost four minutes before Botten knotted the score at 3-3.

Plattsburgh outshot Oswego 13-6 in the third period. The Cardinals nearly scored during a wild scramble with about four minutes left and had another good opportunity on their next trip down. But then Adams tallied his unassisted goal.

“I thought they had the better opportunities there; they just didn’t finish when they had the chances,” Gosek said. “And they let us hang around, and we were able to get the one to go ahead.”

Zawadzki recorded the win by stopping all 22 shots he faced. Cadieux made 12 save for Plattsburgh.

The Cardinals will host a SUNYAC Tournament semifinal next Saturday.

“Unfortunately in this world, the best way to learn is from mistakes and adversity,” Emery said. “And we had some adversity (Saturday), and we have to take advantage of the adversity and be better on Monday.”

The Cardinals honored radio play-by-play man Ducky Drake, who called his last regular-season game, by wearing red jerseys with “Drake” on the back during warmups. Drake was presented with a framed jersey.

Plattsburgh’s five seniors — Cadieux, Farnan, Nick Jensen, Barry Roytman and Sam Foley — were also recognized before the game.
