Penn State Womens Hockey

Re: Penn State Womens Hockey

From the NCAA Division I manual

14.2.1 Five-Year Rule - A student-athlete shall complete his or her seasons of participation within five calendar years from the beginning of the semester or quarter in which the student-athlete first registered for a minimum full-time program of studies in a collegiate institution, with time spent in the armed services, on official church missions or with recognized foreign aid services of the U.S. government being excepted. For foreign students, service in the armed forces or on an official church mission of the student's home country is considered equivalent to such service in the United States.

If I'm reading this rule correctly, and there doesn't seem to be much to misread in it, a freshman from the 2011-12 club team could still play four years of D-1 hockey if they make the D-1 roster. I don't think an upperclassman from the club team who makes the D-1 roster is going to worry much about how many years they get to play D-1 hockey.

Aside from the five to play four, there is also the the fact that the clock starts ticking as soon as you graduate high school, and eligibility runs out by 24th birthday provisions.

Re: Penn State Womens Hockey

And if they've already played a year of club hockey, they'll only be in school for three more years.

Re: Penn State Womens Hockey

On the Thankyouterry blog there is a roster but it dosen't list the walk-ons or any player that wasn't recruited. I think there are a couple of the players from the club team that may be on the team also.

The word is that six players from last year's club team are definitely making the jump, so add that to the 16 on my blog and you're up to 22/27 (they're trying to keep both men's and women's rosters at the same size for Title IX, and the men's roster looks to be 27, so that's a safe guess for the size of the women's roster). The positional breakdown of the 22 so far is 13/8/1. Obviously, a couple of goalies coming in would be about the least surprising thing ever.

I promised to keep the names of the six in confidence, but you can probably figure at least half of them out if you know who did all the scoring for the club team in the spring semester. A few others were given "maybes," which I assume is based on how recruiting for those last five spots goes.

I doubt very much that the final roster will be much bigger than 22. Zero point in having more than 12-7-3. You can sit a few players in the stands for a few games, but eventually they get peeved and either leave or start causing problems if they don't see the ice.

Re: Penn State Womens Hockey

Was told during our D's recruiting process that the optimum roster size is actually 24-26 players due to injury potential. Most teams also carry 3 goalies for that reason as well. Yes, some will sit in the stands more than others, but if the coach is honest, those girls know who they are. Some teams carry less and then may find themselves in a situation that they are playing with a short bench due to injuries (rash of concussions). I also got the impression that it's better for practices to carry a few more on the roster.

I have to believe the coach is looking to make sure the classes balance out during the course of the first 4 years.

Re: Penn State Womens Hockey

Is Penn State adopting the BC policy of no Canadians? Or is it a money issue being that it's cheaper to give a PA resident a scholly over International students?

Cali

screw'em. Really seems to be hurting BC. Not.

Re: Penn State Womens Hockey

No, Penn State are recruiting in Canada, but it is probably better to recruit American non-scholarship players for financial reasons.

...except we already are up to 22 on early signees, recruited walk-ons, and the six club teamers...and need two more goalies. So that's at least 24. I had heard "a few" maybes for other club team members, although I only know of one personally.

We are in balance [with Title IX] now. So we reasoned that if we’re going to add 26 more participants on the male [hockey] side, we have to get to approximately 26 [women’s players]. Maybe we can get by with 25 and it wouldn’t throw us out of whack, but something very, very close to that. http://www.collegian.psu.edu/archive/2012/04/09/icers.aspx

The men's roster ended up at 27: http://www.gopsusports.com/sports/m-hockey/mtt/psu-m-hockey-mtt.html

For whatever that's all worth...

My bet is still that the final roster will be at 22, or will end up there by the end of the first half of the season. I think you will find that there are hopeful players that find that they aren't at the speed and skill level required to compete at D1 and don't like or want to spend time as a practice player and sit in the stands on game day.

I agree, the roster will most likely stay low. If it goes up it will be with non-scholly players, used to fill in for practices.

From what I had been told is that it will be closer to 30 if not over!

Re: Penn State Womens Hockey

PSU plans to play Bemidji and UND's women's junior varsity teams in three week-end series next year, rotating sites.

Re: Penn State Womens Hockey

Would be nice to have another D1 organization that displays the patriotism of the BC program. A successful program and patriotic is a pretty good combo. Would be curious if there are others.
