Penn State Womens Hockey

Re: Penn State Womens Hockey

Does this include women's schollies? My understanding the initial monies were for the arena and men's team. Fund raising needing to be done for the women's.

The 2010-11 women's club team still had a booster club, and they had to fundraise to help pay dues - maybe that's what you're thinking of. With the Pegula deal for D-1 hockey and the arena, it's always been equal parts for men's and women's programs.

While it may be true that there is equal support, the perception is quite different. Talk around the rinks from the outset has been that the women's coach was hired because of his contacts within the PSU community which would facilitate the fundraising that was needed to sustain the women's program.

All we've heard at Penn State from Terry Pegula, Joe Battista, and Josh Brandwene has been about everything being done equally for the men's and women's D-1 programs. Pegula has been very consistent in including the women's program in his plans for D-1 hockey at Penn State, so I take him at his word on it. This is the first time I've ever been somewhere when a new D-1 hockey program is first starting, but there hasn't been even a hint of the women's program not getting anything that the men's program gets. If Josh Brandwene was hired as head coach for his Penn State contacts (having been a player here himself), I would think it had something to do with him using that to generate even more interest and fan support for the women's program. Also, since Penn State is keeping their men's and women's club teams when the D-1 programs start, it wouldn't make much sense to start a D-1 women's program that would ever need fundraisers to survive.

Re: Penn State Womens Hockey

Does anyone know when the 2012 schedules come out? Can't wait for the season to start.

Re: Penn State Womens Hockey

I emailed the CHA and asked, and they said the schedule won't be released until much closer to the start of the season. Of course, they didn't say how close to the season that means, but I'm not expecting it for a good while. I'm more anxious for the roster, which should be finalized by now, shouldn't it?

I would believe that the respective coaches have their schedules already as they are the ones that put them together. Contact the coach and see if it is available.

Re: Penn State Womens Hockey

On the Thankyouterry blog there is a roster but it dosen't list the walk-ons or any player that wasn't recruited. I think there are a couple of the players from the club team that may be on the team also.

Re: Penn State Womens Hockey

Well, we know of at least 16 new players coming (the 16 that have been named, anyway), so there is still room. There is only one named goalie so far (Celine Whitlinger from Gilmour Academy), and you have to dress two for every game, and there is usually a third. I don't know how much bigger a roster gets, but you'd want a few more to cover injuries, possible transfers, etc., I suppose.

Look for a goalie transfer announcement in due course from another D1 program.

Re: Penn State Womens Hockey

Well, UConn's freshman goalie, Emily Walsh, has exactly zero stats on their 2011-12 season stats chart - if a goalie is leaving UConn for Penn State, she'd be the likely one. Their sophomore goalie split time pretty evenly with their outgoing senior goalie, so she's got to be comfortable with her ice time at UConn. If Walsh leaves, UConn is left with only their 2011-12 sophomore goalie.....ouch. I don't know what the draw for Penn State would be for a UConn goalie who didn't play last season, unless it's just to fill a roster spot.

I think Chuli from Stoney Creek is a 2012 recruit. She has a pretty good resume which might explain the transfer.

If Penn State really is getting a goalie from UConn, and UConn is set with their experienced sophomore goalie and this Stoney Creek recruit, it sounds even more likely that we'll be seeing Emily Walsh at Penn State this season.....IF we're getting a UConn goalie. That would make two known goalies - Whitlinger from Gilmour Academy and Walsh from UConn. But.....this is still very much just speculation.

Re: Penn State Womens Hockey

Also for the players who make it off the club team, do they still have 4 years of eligibility or do they lose them by playing club?

Same goes for NCAA players who play their four years, if they go to grad school can they play club hockey?

Re: Penn State Womens Hockey

I'm 99% sure that any freshmen from last season's club team who make this year's D-1 roster won't automatically lose a year because of having played club in their freshman year, but I can't back that up with anything besides saying it's something I heard. I don't know how it works for upperclassmen who make the D-1 team after having played club hockey up to this point in their careers.

Isn't there some kind of rule about having five years to complete their time? I hope somebody can answer this.....I'd like to know for sure, too.
