Penn State Womens Hockey

Re: Penn State Womens Hockey

PSU will be better than Lindenwood in their first season, but not that much better.
I think Penn State will be better prepared, because they've known for a while now that they are heading to D-I next season, whereas Lindenwood didn't make the final decision until about 12 months ago.

Re: Penn State Womens Hockey

The coach was just hired last year about this time. I saw him on the circuit looking at players. I hope you are right that they will be better prepared. maybe they won't be in last place.

JoeP are you a bulldofg alum? I went to schol there but didn't play hockey for them.

Re: Penn State Womens Hockey

Nope, I'm not a UMD alum, just a fan. I have a brother who lives right by State College, so he goes to the club games and talks to Battista all the time. I guess there's already a transfer player playing in her first game tonight and looking impressive. I didn't catch a name or where she came from, but I would expect PSU is going to see more of that before they hit D1.

Re: Penn State Womens Hockey

I would assume the DI transfer playing at Penn State is Taylor Gross. Formerly with Colorado Select as a youth player, then UCONN as a Freshman last year. She was rookie of the year at UCONN last year as a Freshman and finished as their 1st or 2nd leading scorer last year I believe. Great kid!!! Dynamic scorer and will be a veteran leader for Penn State.

Taylor Gross will be a huge addition to the Penn State squad. She was a mainstay in the group that made Colorado Select a force a few years back. With her added experience Penn State's stocks just went up.

Re: Penn State Womens Hockey

Will Taylor have a chance at making the D-1 team next year? From what I read she is on the Club Team.

Re: Penn State Womens Hockey

Absolutely, T. Gross will be on the DI team next year...she is there for that purpose. She is skating with the club team to stay in hockey shape and to get to know the ropes. She left UCONN mid year this year, and will be on scholarship at Penn 2012-13 season.

STUART=pennpapa;5317099]Will Taylor have a chance at making the D-1 team next year? From what I read she is on the Club Team.[/QUOTE]

No offense but that seems like. Ridiculous question. She was Uconns rookie of then year last year and although she transferred now (I give her credit because she could've been dishonest and stayed until the end of the year, then transferred), the intent is clearly that shell play d1 next year. They have 14 that they signed on national letter of intent day, several more who are committed walkons, and the top club players will be on the roster as well.

Re: Penn State Womens Hockey

I was always told that there are no ridiculus questions, only ridiculus answers.. Be that as it may, I will try to do better in the future.

I am new at this college hockey stuff and learning every day.

If you have the names of some of the transfers and other players who may n\be on the team nest season, please pass them on as I would be interested.

I realise that the team will bne new and probably have a tough time getting started. Hopefullly the coaching staff will get them together and develop them into a competitive team. That will attract some good players in the future.

Re: Penn State Womens Hockey

anyone know any of these girls? I have seen a coupla of them play but can't really compare them at the college level. As you can probalby tell, I'm anxious for the start of next year. I will miss JoePa but I really enjoy womens hockey. Not as violet as the boys and they have a lot of skill.

For those keeping track at PSU, you can add Darby Kern, a F from Peters Township, PA (suburb of Pittsburgh). She plays for Pittsburgh Penguins Elite where she has 31 pts. (13 G, 18 A) in 53 games. She's tall, nearly 6 feet which gives her tremendous reach -- she sees the ice well and makes good passes to set up goals.

Paige Jahnke ....................D ................................(Roseville) ...............................Oakdale, MN
Watched Jahnke tonight in regular season finale against traditional foe Stillwater.

Solid player, good skater, somewhat over shadowed on her own high school team by two national under 18 team players (the team has 4 players going D1 next year including Paige). She looks to me like the sort of solid defender that a start up program is going to need.

Re: Penn State Womens Hockey

I asked the women's assistant coach, Gina Kearns, about the status of club hockey once the D-1 program starts next season, and she said it still hasn't been decided. Should Penn State keep a club program? What about the girls on the current club team who don't make the D-1 roster this Fall? Do they just stop playing hockey?

I know three from the current club team who will almost certainly be playing D-1: Tess Weaver, Jess Desorcie, and Taylor Gross. Weaver is the club team's leading scorer, and Desorcie and Gross have been on fire since they both transferred to Penn State a couple months ago. With 15 incoming scholarship recruits, there can't be much room left for too many current club players.

Spoke to Joe Battista at last night's men's game against Duquesne, and asked about club hockey next year at Penn State, and he said they're keeping both club teams along with the D-1 men's and women's teams. That's great news for all the girls who won't be on the D-1 team.

Re: Penn State Womens Hockey

Senior Day for the Penn State Lady Icers on February 19 brought a 4-2 win and a series sweep over Vermont, including a 5-0 shutout the night before, making Penn State the ECWHL regular season champions. The ECWHL tournament is next weekend.

Re: Penn State Womens Hockey

Pennpapa - you better check what you are reading… Taylor Gross has played in 46 games for UConn the last 2 years…was the Hockey East freshman of the year with 23 points (12 G 11 A) in 2010…

I know and have seen several of the girls on your "list" - several times... just chill - you have a while...

At today's official groundbreaking for the new Pegula Arena being built at Penn State, Terry Pegula announced that he is raising his donation from $88 million to $102 million, for the arena and for scholarships, and he expects no compromises anywhere. No word on the 2012-13 roster yet, and no timetable for announcing it, either.

Does this include women's schollies? My understanding the initial monies were for the arena and men's team. Fund raising needing to be done for the women's.
