Penn State 2012-2013: Welcome to D1

Re: Penn State 2012-2013: Welcome to D1

The Nittany Lions bounced back with a 5-1 win on Saturday night, with five different players scoring goals.

It was a huge win over a top tier team. Now there's a weekend off and time to prepare for a huge road trip to Union.

Bottom line is -- this team can flat out play hockey!

Careful now. "top tier team"? Air Force didn't receive even so much a single vote in this week's USCHO poll and is not ranked in the Pairwise--at all. I realize they were the preseason pick to win their conference, but.............

What, then, does that make your upcoming opponent, Union, who received a first place vote in this week's poll and is in the top ten in the polls and in Pairwise?

Top tier in that they've been in the tournament five of past six years, albeit as the AHA champs. This was the toughest test for this new program - even over the win against RIT.

No doubt Union will be THE benchmark for the team before games against Michigan State and Wisconsin in the new year. But as Dartmouth proved last night....ya never know! That's why they play the game.

I know it's early, but still - it's nice to see Penn State ranked above some big names in KRACH and Pairwise. :)

Steve,

Been watching your team through my orange tinted glasses (lol) and indeed was surprised (but not overly) with your result vs Air Force. Good bunch of players on your team. Best of luck against Union. I took a few pictures (nothing fancy) at the two Penn State games I was at this year, here's a link.

Appreciate the thoughts and the photos. Do you mind if I link to them on our Facebook page?

Solid performances this weekend by State. Would have been nice if they could have kept the second game a little bit closer, but still a hell of a job for their first weekend against a ranked team. If they keep maturing and improving I can see them snagging one from Wisconsin or MSU in January. I think it's hilarious that fans from any team they beat or play well against say that their team (apparently) didn't play to their potential that weekend.

Welcome to USCHO! Minnesota is the only school who has that right and nobody else. Just sayin.

To be honest.. not a big surprise that ASU took one from you guys this weekend. Your roster is still mainly club players or players without D1 experience. Additionally, to call ASU a club team is misleading. They have one of the best programs in the nations, recruiting, huge talent pool, and could easily dominate d3/2 in the NCAA. So don't be too hard on yourselves.

I'll admit though that losing to you guys this year probably feels similar to what you're feeling right now.

.

Arizona St may be able to compete at the D3 level, but not a chance they "could easily dominate." Programs like Oswego, Norwich, St. Norbert, Plattsburgh, and Middlebury would wipe the floor with ASU 9 times out of 10. Let's not forget Penn St was also shut out 3-0 by Buffalo St, a mid pack (at best) D3 program.

Exactly. I would even throw in a couple of Minnesota D3 teams in there. Hell I didn't even know ASU had any kind of hockey.

Re: Penn State 2012-2013: Welcome to D1

Sure, St. Thomas, Gustavus, and I could name 10-15 more D3 programs I think would have little trouble with ASU.

Penn State is the best team ASU will face this year. You can't say the same thing about the D3 teams PSU has scheduled this season.

So do we simply throw away the fact that PSU dominated ASU in possession time, shots, and faceoffs in game 1?
PSU seems to be like a DR Jekyll and Mr Hyde group who has yet to figure it out.
As for ASU playing against top 20 D3 teams. I seriously doubt it would be closer than 5 goals.
ASU vs Mid range D3 teams would be interesting though.

Lets put it another way. Adrian has a D3 NCAA team and an ACHA D1 team who currently reside as the #2 team in the ACHA behind ASU. Do you really think that the Adrian club team would come close to beating their NCAA team? Please!

So when Penn St. goes to Minny or Michigan or Wisconsin next year what kind of score are you folks expecting?

Re: Penn State 2012-2013: Welcome to D1

Penn State was a great opponent for ACHA Arizona State, but they will not be the best team ASU plays this year. I'd say that the University of British Columbia will be a tough one for Arizona State. They make the trip to Vancouver later this semester.
