Part VI of the XXI Winter Olympiad: USA!! USA!! USA!!

Re: Part VI of the XXI Winter Olympiad: USA!! USA!! USA!!

They more or less swallowed their whistles for most of the game.

At least when they do that, everyone knows where they stand. Only way a call would be made would be if it prevented an immediate scoring opportunity or was otherwise egregious.

It sounds bad, but at least it's consistent in its way.

Is it 2014 yet?

We've got 4 worlds and 4 WJCs between now and then. We only have 2 months to wait until the puck drops.

2010 IIHF World Championship

In Cologne, Mannheim & Gelsenkirchen, Germany, May 7-23, 2010

Group A (Cologne): Russia, Belarus, Slovakia, Kazakhstan.
Group B (Mannheim): Canada, Switzerland, Latvia, Italy.
Group C (Mannheim): Sweden, Czech Republic, Norway, France.
Group D (Cologne): Finland, USA, Germany, Denmark.

This was the best hockey over a protracted tourney in history, and the Russians didn't even show up -- something they will certainly do in Sochi*.

International hockey's never been stronger, with 7 or 8 men's teams now able to credibly claim to be elite.

* That is unless that Olympics gets moved if a full scale shooting war breaks out in that region.

Terrific game this afternoon. Congratulations to the winners and condolences to the losers. As someone now in his sixth decade of watching college hockey, I was glad to see three of the five goals scored by players who were collegiately trained in the U.S. It's a strong endorsement of the qulaity of hockey played in college conferences. That was a great Olympic tournament. :)

Well, it isn't going to matter anyways. The world ends in 2010 remember? :D

Canada also isn't exporting their citizens here illegally and allowing a giant drug war to spill over the border. Or they're so polite we haven't noticed yet.

And then whine about the American immigration's treatment of illegals while brutalizing the Central Americans at their southern border. %^(^ that county.

They do send hordes of French Canadians to Florida during the winter months and seeing some 55 year old dude whose eaten far too much poutine in Tampa in a speedo is an act of aggression if I've ever seen one.

No matter what it was a great game to watch. I'd like a different result but...
Jon and I might be the only posters on here who don't hate the Canadians(maybe the Montreal kind but not the Olympic team:D

Re: Part VI of the XXI Winter Olympiad: USA!! USA!! USA!!

Pretty sure the reffing options are what they are specifically because of the agreement between the NHL and the IIHF/IOC to allow NHL players in the games - there's simply not a deep international reffing pool as you find in soccer, for example.

i highly doubt that... probably not a deep IIHF pool... but that can be said for the NHL refs as well since none of them are IIHF. Sweden, Finland, Russia, Germany, Switzerland, etc all have their own professional leagues. I think this is more likely that the NHL wanted their guys out there to avoid the peculiarities of having european refs.

Say what now? I'm assuming the vote was taken before today's game.

He was terrible in his defensive duties throughout the tournament. No way in hell he should let Crosby past him. Tackle him, do whatever you can to stop him.

I still don't know how the downhill skiers are able to stop before taking out the first 6-7 rows of spectators.
