Yeah, that was a cheap shot. On the other hand, that guy who was going for the take down on Hull got what he deserved. Bobby put him down like a gut shot mule. Incidentally, Frantisek Pospisil was on the Czech team the US beat for the silver medal in Sapporo in '72.

Tiger Woods is one of the few figures who has delivered, has, in fact, exceeded the hype.

For that matter, so did Ali. So did Gretzky, who was heavily hyped (and its apparently inevitable flip-side, derided) and still exceeded expectations. And MJ. There are probably more, but those 4 stand out to me as the greatest all-time in their sports, and also the most relentlessly hyped even prior to their pro accomplishments.

Recall that Amex signed Tiger to a massive contract before he'd ever struck a ball in the PGA, that's how confident they were. Those four guys all delivered for sure. I've posted before about how even though the Bruins were a dead last team year after year, their fans consoled themselves with "wait 'til Bobby Orr comes up." At the time, Orr was 14!

Yeah, I wonder if Clarke was ejected for that assassination attempt. In the Hull clip, I don't believe a penalty was called on the guy who had both arms wrapped around Bobby nor on Hull for putting the guy's lights out.

The only treaty the Soviets ever honored, IIRC, was the non-agression pact with Hitler. Thus, when they felt they needed to put down the Dubcek government in Czechoslovakia, they violated the Treaty of Bratislava and invaded.

I'm trying to remember, wasn't there a beautiful Czech gymnast who won several gold medals ('68 Olympics?) in a sort of rebuke to the Russians? edit: Her name is Vera Caslavska. Gold in the all-around, vault, uneven bars and floor exercise. Silver on the balance beam. And it was her against the Russians in all of those events.

One year Hull won both the Hart trophy and the Lady Byng an astonishing accomplishment, which IIRC, no one else has done. I posted the video to support the point that Hull rarely retaliated, but when he did, somebody usually got hurt.

This clip is about 9 minutes long, CBC coverage of a game between the Hawks and Leafs from '67. Interesting look back. Hull scores a hattie. The first two are on slap shot rockets that the Leafs goalie never saw. You can clearly hear the Toronto crowd ooohing and ahhing at the velocity of those shots.
