Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

Re: Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

In one of history's great ironies, Hitler's death was reported on 1 May 1945.

And W announced "Mission Accomplished" on May 1st, 2003. Now it's Mission Accomplished.

Let's just hope his body was dumped someplace where he can be eaten by crabs or lobsters or some other animal considered unclean to Islam.

Osama Bin Laden sleeps with the fishes!

Those Seal Team members will never have to buy another drink in their lifetimes. A textbook operation.

What a weekend to have no internet service at home. Thanks, Verizon

I can't wait for the movie about the operation to come out. It will involve one of Matt Damon, Christian Bale, Jeff Bridges, or Jake Gyllenhaal.

TI am not too shocked he was in a mansion. If you were hiding from the U.S would you really want them to know you were in a mansion? I’d play it off like I was in the middle of nowhere.

heh, obviously how he stayed hidden for so long.

Hiding in plain sight. 35 miles north of Islamabad, in the biggest house in the neighborhood, just two miles from Pakistan's main service academy.

Re: Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

We'll find out in due course. But I'm wondering, seriously, if there's a Muslim protocol for burial at sea.

The internet has an answer for everything, with the caveat that the answer is not always accurate.

623. * If a person dies on a ship and if there is no fear of the decay of the dead body and if there is no problem in retaining it for sometime on the ship, it should be kept on it and buried in the ground after reaching the land. Otherwise, after giving Ghusl, Hunut, Kafan and Namaz-e-Mayyit it should be lowered into the sea in a vessel of clay or with a weight tied to its feet. And as far as possible it should not be lowered at a point where it is eaten up immediately by the sea predators.

I'm pretty curious to hear how we obtained the name of the courier from the detainee. I do hope he wasn't made to listen to loud music or other horrifying things.

"I've never wished a man dead, but I have read some obituaries with great pleasure."

I love Mark Twain.

Re: Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

Politically this is obviously a huge vindication of Obama's renewed focus on Afghanistan and Pakistan and away from Iraq, but that'll all sort itself out come election time. To me this is really a day for the 9-11 families, who got a measure of justice last night in OBL's violent death which he had to know was coming once the Americans fired on his compound. Its not going to make them feel better about what happened 10 years ago, but the message is clear. There's nowhere to hide.

This does put all that birther nonsense in perspective though. Perhaps now the country can focus on less idiocy (Trump for example) and more serious issues.

Lastly, it was great seeing people celebrating outside the White House.

I'd say the over/under on people going back to their scripts is 3 days. Some already have. But in the brief moment before, it is a wonderful feeling to be completely united as Americans in something. We should make April 30th a national "Sic Semper Tyrannis" holiday. I know us -- we would put Guy Fawkes Day to shame. :)

Re: Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

The government has said that they do have photos of bin Laden, but his face is unrecognizable. Combine that with the burial at sea, and you can hear the conspiracy theories being cranked up.

Re: Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

Is it wrong that the main reason I'm enjoying this is payback because my wedding was that weekend and there were many many issues which arose because of restrictions and reactions to 9/11?

Ah screw it... woot!

Re: Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

We'll find out in due course. But I'm wondering, seriously, if there's a Muslim protocol for burial at sea. I doubt it. Do we just roll his corpse off the fantail of a garbage skow? Shoot his a*s out of a torpedo tube (making sure we've weighted him down, like the rest of the garbage)? Flush him with the rest of the sh*t from a carrier? I was going to suggest that Fr Guido Sarducci preside at any ceremony, but it's too late for that.

Even if there is a procedure (and I guess there is) I don't understand why we had to give him an Islamic burial. How many people claimed Osama was not a real Muslim? Don't tell me we did this because of those who think he is? If we don't believe it then don't follow through.
