Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

Re: Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

Hitchens: "If you tell me that you are staying in a rather nice walled compound in Abbottabad, I can tell you in return that you are the honored guest of a military establishment that annually consumes several billion dollars of American aid. It's the sheer blatancy of it that catches the breath."

Re: Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

This may have just gotten Obama reelected.

I doubt it. I think it was Bill Clinton who was credited with "it's the economy, stupid." No matter what side of the aisle you sit, this was a vindication for America. No sense politicizing it.

Re: Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

What a shock, a Lebanese radical thinks the US is out to get him and everyone else that practices the Islamic faith.

I agree that this shouldn't be politicized. But it is also true that it'll be tougher to question Obama's bonafides on fighting terrorism in 2012 after this.

Carville said that while working on Clinton's campaign.

Got this idea from the Puck Daddy blog comments section... "Each SEAL member should allowed to have a day with bin Laden's body a la the Stanley Cup."

Re: Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

Cry me a mother****ing river.
Exactly!

That seems to me to be a very dumb thing to say. Especially since they've been harboring the fugitive for years.
Again, exactly.

From Breaking News on Twitter:
Musharraf says U.S. raid to kill Osama Bin Laden is "violation of Pakistan's borders"
...and how would Musharraf catagorize the events of 9/11/01? Pervez Musharraf can eat $**** and die! F him and his opinion!

Re: Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

I wonder if we'll ever know the identity of the person who bagged him, sorta like the mystery over who shot down the Red Baron.

Regarding politics, I don't think its inappropriate to say that of course its strengthened Obama's hand in that he wasn't running against anybody with strong foreign policy creds anyway but now the situation has changed so much that I doubt any of them would be advised to even bring the subject up (foreign policy) unless specifically asked as a campaign issue. While its true that overseas success didn't help Bush I, its also true that foreign policy concerns helped Bush II tremendously in his re-election campaign, so who knows?

Re: Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

Here's the transcript of what Musharraf said:

Pakistan's Musharraf: Bin Laden death "positive step"

(Reuters) - Pakistan's former military ruler Pervez Musharraf said on Monday that news of Osama bin Laden's death was a "positive step" even as he criticized the United States for launching the raid within his country's borders.

Calling it a victory for the people of Pakistan, Musharraf said he also expected some short-term instability due to acts of revenge.

"It's a very positive step and it will have positive long-term implications," Musharraf told Reuters in Dubai, where he has a home. "Today we won a battle, but the war against terror will continue."

Bin Laden died early on Monday in Abbottabad, a tony enclave north of Islamabad, after U.S. Navy Seals were sent in to kill the leader of the militant group that orchestrated the September 11 attacks and had eluded capture for nearly a decade.

Musharraf said, however, that the operation infringed on Pakistan's sovereignty: "It's a violation to have crossed Pakistan's borders."

In a related story, Internet traffic has spiked so much that Google (yes, mighty Google) is being knocked offline periodically.

Was thinking about this in the morning. It would probably be wise not to come forward given there would be a lot of radicals who would seek retribution one way or another. Osama might be dead, but the world will always have crazies.

I just sent a note to our alumni department at NYA to see what the last info we have on David's location. He might have one hell of a story for us at the next reunion!

Re: Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

That poor guy who live-blogged the event without realizing what he was witnessing has been deluged

Bin Laden is dead. I didn't kill him. Please let me sleep now.
Fact: I don't own a TV set and stopped watching TV many years ago. Sorry three-lettered-big-tv-news-channels for not replying to your emails

Re: Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

Who Isn't Happy the US Killed Bin Laden?

One of the groups they cite is Al Qaeda....why would they be so upset?:rolleyes:

Re: Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

from the Politico link:
“Bin Laden was living in a relatively comfortable place: a compound valued at about $1 million,” a senior U.S. official told POLITICO. “Many of his foot soldiers are located in some of the remotest regions of Pakistan and live in austere conditions. You’ve got to wonder if they’re rethinking their respect for their dead leader. He obviously wasn’t living as one of them.”
Am I the only one who noted the irony in this statement?
