Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

Re: Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

I wonder if we'll ever know the identity of the person who bagged him, sorta like the mystery over who shot down the Red Baron.

Regarding politics, I don't think its inappropriate to say that of course its strengthened Obama's hand in that he wasn't running against anybody with strong foreign policy creds anyway but now the situation has changed so much that I doubt any of them would be advised to even bring the subject up (foreign policy) unless specifically asked as a campaign issue. While its true that overseas success didn't help Bush I, its also true that foreign policy concerns helped Bush II tremendously in his re-election campaign, so who knows?
Oh my god, we get it, you want to make this about politics. You've posted the same thing like four times and nobody has taken the bait. Please stop.

And if they want to call this an "assassination"? Fine, SFW?

Re: Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

I agree that this shouldn't be politicized. But it is also true that it'll be tougher to question Obama's bonafides on fighting terrorism in 2012 after this.

Exactly, it may not be a slogan, but it will become a non-issue because the GOP just won't bring it up for now obvious reasons.

Re: Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

John McCain to Larry King when asked if he would send US forces after bin Laden in Pakistan:
Larry, I'm not going to go there and here's why: because Pakistan is a sovereign nation. I think the Pakistanis would want bin Laden out of their hair and out of their country and it's causing great difficulties in Pakistan itself.

So hey, Musharraf might have one guy buying the sovereignty argument today.

Edit: I'm taking the "not going to go there" as more of a refusal to discuss a hypothetical than a refusal to go into Pakistan. Either way, kind of funny in hindsight.

Cindy Sheehan:

I am sorry, but if you believe the newest death of OBL, you're stupid. Just think to yourself--they paraded Saddam's dead sons around to prove they were dead--why do you suppose they hastily buried this version of OBL at sea? This lying, murderous Empire can only exist with your brainwashed consent--just put your flags away and THINK!

Re: Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

Can we stop bending over to please these people if this is the reaction we get?

– The head of Egypt's prestigious seat of Sunni Muslim learning, al-Azhar, condemned U.S. troops' disposal of the body of Osama bin Laden at sea Monday as an affront to religious and human values.

Muslims set great store by interment in permanent graves on land and accept burial at sea only in cases where the body cannot be preserved intact aboard ship until it reaches shore.

"The Grand Imam, Dr Ahmed El-Tayeb, the sheikh of Al-Azhar condemned the reports, if true, of the throwing of the body of Osama bin Laden into the sea," according to a statement released by al-Azhar, which is respected around the world by many Sunni Muslims as a seat of religious learning.

The procedure "contradicts all the religious values and human norms," it said: "The Grand Imam asserted that it is forbidden in Islam to deform the dead, regardless of their beliefs. One honors the dead by burying them."

[Insert long form death certificate joke here]

If you can trust nothing else about our two major political parties, trust that they'll find a way to make Osama's death a divisive issue.

Listened to Rush today in the car for about 3 minutes over lunch. He's politicizing the crap out of this today.

Ummm..I think you need to chill out and celebrate like the rest of the country. Bob Gray had brought up the political angle and while I mentioned it, it certainly wasn't the only thing I commented on. Could you kindly site the 4 times I've posted an overtly political view on this? Otherwise stop acting all bent. When you get appointed Lord Of The USCHO Message Boards, let me know.

Actually I had just responded to someone else saying to keep this from being political, but that it certainly doesn't hurt Obama (a seemingly obvious and innocuous comment).

Re: Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

Keeping the body around, to bury or deface or whatever, would have been a distraction and frankly more trouble than it's worth. We got him, he's dead, he can't do any more ****, just dump him overboard and we can move on and relegate him to some footnote in history, having failed in his ultimate objections. And if any other country objects, well they could have either claimed him as a citizen and had some standing to complain (but of course they didn't) or bothered to get him themselves (but of course they didn't).
