Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

Re: Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

Geraldo>>Greta last night on Fox.

On the other hand, is anyone else a little disturbed that this went down in a specially constructed mansion about a 75 mile drive from Isalamabad rather than in a ratty little cave up in the mountains? I know we're not supposed to say anything to offend Pakistan (along the lines of Lincoln's not freeing the slaves in the border states), but come on, now...

I don't really buy this line as I don't think this is a slam dunk like many seem to suddenly propose. If this was so obvious, one could surmise that the US is also to blame for watching satellite photos of a gigantic compound being built in 2005 but not investigating it at anytime in the last 6 years.

This is just a far trickier business than 20/20 hindsight would indicate.

Re: Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

Even if there is a procedure (and I guess there is) I don't understand why we had to give him an Islamic burial.

My understanding is we did it because there are a billion Muslims in the world, and while only a small number of them hate us they all believe in their rituals and presumably think any Muslim (even bad ones) should get a proper burial. Then Allah decides which bin he goes in for eternity (my money's on Lake of Fire). Not doing it wouldn't so much be an insult to the corpse as an insult to the whole religion. Like when Fred Phelps finally dies in an auto-erotic asphyxiation accident, the cop who finds him shouldn't stand astride the body yelling, "Where's Your Jesus Now?!"

So, this guy just became unintentionally famous. I doubt he's thrilled about it. "How was your weekend?"

The government has said that they do have photos of bin Laden, but his face is unrecognizable. Combine that with the burial at sea, and you can hear the conspiracy theories being cranked up.

The whole thing went down on live video, and the going thing is that the White House will release parts of the video that shows that it is Osama. It's also reported that he was shot in the left eye and the video/pictures will be graphic.

Even if there is a procedure (and I guess there is) I don't understand why we had to give him an Islamic burial. How many people claimed Osama was not a real Muslim? Don't tell me we did this because of those who think he is? If we don't believe it then don't follow through.

This is not about Osama, its about terrorism.

Terrorism is committed by extremists. But just as with heinous crimes committed by people who believe they are Christians or who have 'heard from God'...extremists sometimes believe they are good Muslims.

If we have the ability to bring Osama to justice, deliver a blow to AQ...and reduce the likelihood of terrorism from other sources...why not go for the trifecta?

Awesome! It just goes to show how the world is getting small. It seems like the type of comment that would come from my next door neighbor.

Later: “Interesting, I didn’t think my name would trend on Twitter before releasing a couple of rock albums and award-winning software.”

The Muslim Brotherhood not exactly thrilled by the news:

Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood, a conservative organization with links around the Islamic world, has condemned the killing of al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden by U.S. forces as an “assassination.”
...
The statement Monday said the group “is against violence in general, against assassinations and in favor of fair trials.”

A trial? Why didn't we think of that?!

That's great. :) Apparently he took off from Islamabad for the weekend "to get away from the rat race for a while." Yeah, about that...

Re: Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

Well, it seems to be a little more complicated than that.

# Muslim Brotherhood second-in-command Mahmud Ezzat said: "Islam is not bin Laden. After September 11, there had been a lot of confusion. Terrorism was mixed up with Islam. In the coming phase, everyone will be looking to the West for just behaviour." He added that, with bin Laden dead, the western forces should now pull out of Iraq and Afghanistan.[59]

That seems a lot different from Hamas' "how could you kill such a great guy?!"

We don't have to be buddies with the MB and their interests aren't necessarily ours, but from the various stories I've seen on them on AQE etc, they do seem like a different breed of cat from the real Islamists in the region.

al qaeda had threatened to "unleash a nuclear hellstorm" if Osama was killed (Wikileaks stuff posted on Drudge). The level of reaction will tell us how powerful al qaeda remains. If a nuke destroys London and "the tallest building in California" is leveled, they're true to their word. If it's along the lines of "I'm burning my underwear with me in it!", which I suspect will be closer to the truth, then we're winning.

Re: Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

This should make it CLEAR that the idea that the Muslim Brotherhood is a "moderate" organization is a lie. Yes, in moments they give a nice face to the west... this is not one of those moments, this is what they believe.

This is just a far trickier business than 20/20 hindsight would indicate.

I've seen rumors that this related to the identification of a courier back 2007 and that this has been mostly related to tracking that courier. It seems to me, that yes, a mansion was built with high walls but that in itself may not say something. I have to imagine that its probably likely that bin Laden went largely "off the grid" and those couriers probably had to ferry any messages from poit to point... even if bin Laden was still involved or in charge.

edit: btw, the courier info came out of Gitmo from what I've read.

It is different. Still, the bottom line for me is, bin Laden's dead. Are you happy or sad? For me the MB seems a little too sad for my liking.

I'd also love to hear their theory on what exact point during the 40 minute firefight our troops were supposed to say "Hey, Osama, how about coming in for a trial?"

Yes, they know how to speak western liberal. I don't suppose you've checked in with their goals and their spiritual leaders. Learned about Sayeed Qutb?

Re: Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

The CIA ran facial ID which came back a "Very strong match" also ran initial DNA tests which came back a "Very strong match" finally, Osama's wife who he married ten years ago from Yemen ID'd the body.

Cry me a mother****ing river.

They could have been a part of it if they could have kept their mouths shut. With the earlier operations in Pakistan, which the US told the Pakistan government about, the Taliban or AQ somehow knew we were coming and were prepared. Not hard to figure out, morons.

Yep, I agree with both those points.

Apparently the Pakistani press used the word for "killed" rather than "martyred" in their news report. Considering how dicey things are going to get there, that's probably about as good a sign as we're going to get. The Pakistani government said the right things so far. They could, for example, have gotten offended about incursions into their sovereign territory and that would provide cover for street protests that were really about anger at Osama's death. Realpolitik types were probably tempted to do that. It's good that they haven't played it that way at least so far.

Edit: yeah, while I was typing that... So much for the Pakistanis not taking the easy way.

Re: Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

This is the point on which Obama deserves a lot of credit. Ordering OBL killed is obvious. Icing his sorry @ ss in Pakistan and telling them about it afterward sounds easy in hindsight, but there were many people, McCain included, who were against taking that step when that scenario was brought up during the '08 campaign (I believe Edwards was against it to for what its worth, not sure about Hillary Clinton). The problem as has been noted was if you informed Pakistan beforehand, the chances of the info getting into the wrong hands were real, real good. This is the kind of cold blooded, level headed decision making you want out of your President, no matter who he (or she) is. At this point in time, we now have definitive proof the current President has what it takes in these matters. People will have to decide if they feel the same way about the Huckabees, Romneys, Palins, Bachmanns, etc of the world 18 months hence.
