Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

Re: Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

Today was the first time I had to get past an armed guard into the social security office in Houghton. Granted I haven't spent a whole lot of time there.

Your screen name suggests otherwise.

Check out the full "discussion". What a battleaxe.

I am more concerned with the people who agree with her

I look all around and find that only stupid people are breeding...

my screen name reflects my "nontraditional student" standing in undergraduate courses. I'm the grumpy guy in the back row with some gray hairs.
I'm not quite SS age though.

Re: Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

Most interesting news items today: 1)The necessary intel came by way of waterboarding before that practice was ended (how ironic if Obama gets the bulk of the credit for finding him), and 2) Pakistan military was knowingly harboring OBL.

Where are you getting this info? I have heard that it was a Gitmo prisoner, but haven't heard anything about the waterboarding. Also, as much as it doesn't take any stretch of imagination to deduce that the Pakistani military knew about him being there, I haven't heard of any proof of it as of yet.

On point one I'm pretty sure I have heard it reported a couple of times that "enhanced" interrogation techniques were used to get the information. That's water boarding in layman's terms.

I should have said "speculation", not "news". The word "waterboarding" might have been in National Review Online or other Drudge source. I think the story also said it was in a middle east CIA prison, not Gitmo.
The Pakistan complicity is written about here and elsewhere.

Re: Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

Short article.

Officials say CIA interrogators in secret overseas prisons developed the first strands of information that ultimately led to the killing of Osama bin Laden.

Current and former U.S. officials say that Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the mastermind of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, provided the nom de guerre of one of bin Laden's most trusted aides. The CIA got similar information from Mohammed's successor, Abu Faraj al-Libi. Both were subjected to harsh interrogation tactics inside CIA prisons in Poland and Romania.

Poor guys!

Re: Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

that's it. thanks. I might have invented the "waterboarding" on my own.

I don't know, I don't think it's that much of a leap to make. We waterboarded 3 detainees, KSM being one of them. Seems like a pretty good assumption that was one of the "harsh" tactics the article refers to.

Re: Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

so the "body" was "washed, wrapped in a white sheet and eased into the sea in accordance with blah blah blah"... they're not saying what they did with his head. After all, they needed some DNA for testing right?

Re: Osama bin Laden Declared Dead

Regarding Pakistan (oh, and let me get my approval from jmh before I post this...what's that? oh okay: "green light") its 100% believable to me that some members, perhaps even high ranking ones, where complicit in keeping OBL's whereabouts hidden. No big surprise there. However, that's different than saying it was the military's policy to shield him, or the central government's. Look, I'm not thrilled with Pakistan's actions in all of this, but some idiot suggested an investigation or launching some other formal accusastions. What's the point? OBL is dead. Why after the fact turn a sorta helpful government into an arch enemy based on speculations?

There won't be "investigations" of a sovereign nation. There will be more ops done without their knowledge or consent, and perhaps they'll see a cut in aid from the US.
