Ok Penn State....but who is next???

Re: Ok Penn State....but who is next???

Any talk of either South Dakota school?

I was looking at the Great West conference that USD is in, and I think they might need to rename the conference.

New Jersey Institute of Technology
Delaware State University - Soccer
Howard University - Soccer
New York Institute of Technology - Baseball
South Carolina State University - Soccer
Yeah, it's been that way since UND and USD joined. I don't think it's really a permanent conference for either school...

I want to say USD briefly talked about it several years ago, but they would have had to play their home games in Sioux Falls (there's no ice at all in Vermillion). SDSU wouldn't be much better, as the only rink in Brookings is basically a community rink.

Re: Ok Penn State....but who is next???

I've said this before and I'll say it again Army and Air Force can help Navy with some of arena renovation costs. Simply play an outdoor game at Army or Air Force and use net proceeds to cover Navys start up costs. Cadets/military/casual fans would definitely be interested in an outdoor game between the academies.

Penn could/should start up for following reasons:
They have an on campus arena
They will have geographic rival in Princeton
Don't have to worry about Title IX since they are an ivy league

Columbia will never unless they get an insanely huge donation for hockey since real estate in Manhattan is very expensive.

This and a few bucks will get you a cup of coffee at Starbucks so take it with a grain of salt if you wish. I work with a guy who is a Penn alum, and who played on the football team. He stays in touch with the Athletic Department and seems to have a pretty good grasp on what's going on there. I asked him the chances of Penn restating their hockey team and he said slim and none. Although they have the money and the facilities there just isn't the will or desire to get the team going. When I talk to him again I'll see if he can give me a few specifics and I'll pass them on.

Re: Ok Penn State....but who is next???

I love to see that Penn State will be joining Div 1 hockey but adding another northern team is not going to change much.

Talking from a perspective of growing the game.....when are we going to see southern Div 1 teams? There are NHL teams in the south and the grassroots programs in Texas, California and even Florida are seeing NHL prospects arise from these states but to take it to the next level we need to see Div 1 teams in the south.

No matter what happens as of now, the best US athletes will always play football and baseball. This is a major fact due to no southern US div 1 hockey teams. I don't know why the NHL, US Hockey or US College hockey has not put a bigger push forward on this.

Texas has the most professional teams in any state (upwards of 10) and still no Div. 1 College Hockey program. People are looking for answers to keep Atlanta, Florida, Tampa Bay, Dallas etc in the league. Well, there is your answer folks. Figure it out!!

Growing the game is not an onus that NCAA bears, nor should it be. The "official" responsibility of collegiate athletics is to provide a select group of students on campuses all over the country the opportunity to pursue athletic interests, thus adding a vibrant and well-rounded culture to the university community as a whole.

The real priority #1 for college hockey is to get CURRENT hockey players to CHOOSE the NCAA over juniors, so the best players elect to utilize the college route before turning pro. Hence the creation of Hockey, Inc.

Re: Ok Penn State....but who is next???

Northwestern, UPenn, Syracuse - to me those are obvious.

NU's size, athletic endowment, academic profile, and location make PERFECT sense for college hockey. They are Notre Dame plus Boston College minus Jesus divided by two.

Philly is a supportive hockey city. Combine that with the facts that UPenn hoops and football are already well supported, facilities already exist, and Ivy League rivalry enthusiasm is already thick - you've got a turnkey fanbase in students and alumni to market to.

Syracuse started a women's program as an experiment to prepare them for a brother program. It would be very successful there.

So we're all barking up the wrong tree; Hockey, Inc. should be where we voice our complaints of how the BigTen could eliminate schools from Division 1 hockey and limit the options to woo away kids from the CHL?

I think you might be right on that one.

And they have ties with the Wirtz family. If that bankroll isn't helping get a Division 1 program for Northwestern, there ain't NOTHING that will woo Chicagoland universities to move up to D1.

Bulls and bouncyball still reign supreme in Metro Chicago.

Actually, SDSU looked into it at one point, they have a decent draw for club games. The Larson Ice Center in Brookings is arguably the most modern facility in South Dakota. It has 2 sheets of ice with space built already for a 3rd rink. The main arena has seating for 2400 and as of this fall has a video endwall display. I coached youth hockey in Brookings in 2008.

As for Sioux Falls, all of the rinks are below standard and should be replaced in the near future. Sioux Fall itself is looking at building a 16,000 events center that would support hockey and the Summit League basketball tournament.

Also, USD plays their club games in Yankton, which is about 30 miles from Vermillion.

they already have an alum donating the rink and lots of $$$ toward the program.

I wouldnt count on it. College Hockey Inc. has about as much weight as we do on here.
  1. They have not changed the ratio of kids who choose Major Jrs. over College Hockey.
  2. They haven't gotten any of the schools in the Southeast, Texas or West Coast anywhere closer to adding hockey than before. Even any of the schools with existing facilities that could had hockey in a heartbeat.
  3. They havent't found UAH a conference, b/c they were trying to get teams in Florida and the South to start hockey.
  4. And they haven't gotten any more coverage of college hockey on major TV networks (there's lots of Fox College Sports, the NHL Network and ESPNU) but they've been trying to get them on basic cable networks like regular ESPNs or Versus.

I don't believe you are fair here. Paul Kelly has only been on the job for less than a year. Lets see in two or three years before we make judgements.

And there you go - that's basically a communty rink. AHA level or CHA, but not even CCHA. Who do you think SDSU would play in a league with? Maybe when the CHA was still around, it could have worked, but now? They'd have to have something WCHA caliber. Heck, even MSU Moorhead is talking about playing at the UP Center in Fargo just to be in the discussion, rather than the Moorhead Sports Center...

Moose,

SDSU would play in the WCHA.

;)

You know, if this is the result of the BTHC (BSU and the like with multi million $$$ arenas, and start-ups like SDSU playing in the equivilant of some of the high school rinks I go to), maybe that's not so bad. BSU instantly becomes a have (at least of those outside the BTHC)...

As you know we see many high school hockey rinks the size of the CCHA and ECHA rinks.

Frankly a derelict rink where pretty much nobody plays in the cities...the fairgrounds collosseum...is a facility that compares favorably to most other cities rinks.

This looks a lot like Harvard's Rink.

I don't see SDSU ever fielding varsity hockey team, but everyone has to start somewhere. If it wasn't for Papa Pawlenty's signature and state funding, Bemidji would be still playing out of a community rink.
