Ok Penn State....but who is next???

Re: Ok Penn State....but who is next???

You know, if this is the result of the BTHC (BSU and the like with multi million $$$ arenas, and start-ups like SDSU playing in the equivilant of some of the high school rinks I go to), maybe that's not so bad. BSU instantly becomes a have (at least of those outside the BTHC)...

Speaking of $$$ arenas outside the BTHC!

What about PAC 8 hockey?

http://www.pac8hockey.com/

Moving PAC 8 ice hockey to Division I would be huge.

California alone has a population approaching $39 million and is rapidly becomming the Golden State of Hockey with enormous growth potential. California already has 3 NHL arenas that are usually filled to capacity. Tickets are expensive.

California also has large hockey arena's (seating of 10,000 or more) that are used for purposes other than hockey. Such as the Great Western Forum, the Los Angeles Sports Arena, and the Long Beach Sports Arena

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Forum_(Inglewood,_California)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Los_Angeles_Memorial_Sports_Arena

California also has Tier I developmental programs that are supplying players to Division I hockey.

PAC 8 may make a move to division I hockey eventually but I would rather see something happen now rather than later. Big problem is that no individual team seems to want to take the move on their own because of the travel costs. Currently the only Division I ice hockey programs on the west coast are in Alaska.

Southern California would be a nice place for Holiday Tournaments also.

Philly is a supportive hockey city. Combine that with the facts that UPenn hoops and football are already well supported, facilities already exist, and Ivy League rivalry enthusiasm is already thick - you've got a turnkey fanbase in students and alumni to market to.

Penn could instantly add D-I hockey, but they just dont care enough to do it. Btw, their support for basketball and football isn't too good right now. We need D-I hockey in Philly, but other than Penn, no one has the money to get it done. We certainly dont. Wish we did, and maybe one day, but not anytime soon. The best bet for D-I hockey in Philly is Penn, and that's a huge longshot unfortunately, and for the rest of us, it's a pipedream.

Never say never. Just look at this thread.

Re: Ok Penn State....but who is next???

Very true, I never thought another Big Ten/Penn St thread could possibly pop up after the first 10 but I was wrong.

;)

This really is huge news, even the folks in the NHL are talking about it. lol

Who are the other options in Philly, really? Villanova? Temple? Neither of them strike me as candidates.

On a collegiate basis, Philly is a basketball town. Why? Big Five. They have plenty of games without having to travel.

Temple can barely support a football team, in a city where the most popular pro sport is football. Villanova finally restarted its football program after I don't know how many years of shutdown. I don't see them putting any money into hockey.

I'd love to see a college hockey team in Philly, especially if it were Penn, but it ain't gonna happen.

What scares me more is if Syracuse goes D1. I could see that being the start of the new Empire State Hockey League. That would pull schools from the ECAC and AHA leaving the Ivies on their own.

Re: Ok Penn State....but who is next???

Hey all,

I haven't really read the forum on this at all, but what does this mean for other conferences?

Obviously it's destined for the CCHA to lose Michigan, Michigan State, and Ohio State with the WCHA losing Wisconsin and Notre Dame. CHN had a great article about the potential for some schools to branch off and build their own conference. What are the possibilities?

I was doing some thinking, and it seems like there's a good shot at some heavy realignment among the Great Lakes schools and the western schools. I see the potential for some conferences looking to Canisius and Mercyhurst in AHA and St. Lawrence/Clarkson in ECAC. RIT might be a juicy option since they're fresh off a Frozen Four appearance and they're playing in a conference that (while I love it because I'm involved with it) does not have nearly the reputation of producing national title contenders...

What are the thoughts of what might happen from here?

It's like 1981 all over again! :p

As for the other possibilities, read back in all of the threads - general consensus is that the WCHA could survive on its own without Minnesota and Wisconsin, but the CCHA will return to its pre-1981 condition of being a bottom-feeder league, or will perhaps fold altogether. Some think that the better teams from both conferences will try to merge into an Anti-BTHC, leaving the bottom halves of both to band together or die as they choose.

The bolded is not going to happen short of the complete dynamiting of the ECAC.

and I don't see any reason to dynamite the ECAC... I swear, something happens and all the crazies think somehow their ideas just became better.

re: on never saying never

On everything in life.

I will NEVER feel anything but utter contempt and hatred for the Gophers and Vikings.

I actually feel pretty confident in that statement. :D :p

Re: Ok Penn State....but who is next???

MSU-Moorhead DI hockey still on backburner

While NCAA Division I ice hockey is heating up in Happy Valley, the sport is currently on the “back burner” at Minnesota State Moorhead.

“When it gets on the front burner is determined by a whole host of different factors,” MSUM President Edna Szymanski said. “I sure as heck hope we can bring it to the front burner at some point in the not-to-distant future.”

“I would like to get there, but it’s not for awhile,” Szymanski said.
(i.e. until state budget situation is better and a conference opens up a spot)

Re: Ok Penn State....but who is next???

A conference spot isn't going to open up until they make hockey a front burner situation.

Re: Ok Penn State....but who is next???

Even if it is on the back burner it is still a good thing. They are probably in discussions about the program and are figuring something out. The most realistic way for them to start up a team is to get an alumni or group of alumni to donate money to get the team going. They could easily play as an independent and play the other MN schools/UND and CCHA teams in games and maybe make a deal to come out east once a year against an ECAC or HE team.

Re: Ok Penn State....but who is next???

Doesn't matter what burner the issue is on, there are no spots in the current conferences.

The only realistic way that changes is if a) teams start folding, or b) the BTHC forms.

I know a lot of people don't want to see it, but the current structure of college hockey is unsustainable, and the BTHC might actually be able to help that.
