Ohio State - It's officially the off-season

Re: Ohio State - It's officially the off-season

Heard a rumor today that OSU v Michigan sometime this year in Progressive Field in Cleveland..... Comes from a pretty reliable source... Also heard the announcement will come within a week or two

Re: Ohio State - It's officially the off-season

Associated Press

CLEVELAND -- Ohio State and Michigan plan to drop the puck outdoors next season.

Bitter rivals in football -- and just about anything else for that matter -- the schools are finalizing details to play each other in hockey at Progressive Field, home of the Cleveland Indians. A person with knowledge of the negotiations told The Associated Press that the Buckeyes and Wolverines will skate in January at the 43,000-seat ballpark.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because negotiations were ongoing and any announcement on the first major outdoor hockey game in Ohio is still days away.

Ohio State and Michigan are members of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association, and the matchup would be a home game for the Buckeyes.

Michigan has already played wildly successful outdoor games, hosting rival Michigan State last December in "The Big Chill at the Big House," which drew more than 100,000 fans to the Wolverines' colossal football stadium. In 2001, the Spartans hosted Michigan in a hockey game at their football stadium.

An outdoor hockey game would be the latest attempt by the Indians to generate revenue with their downtown ballpark. Last winter, the Indians hosted "Snow Days" at Progressive Field, turning the 17-year-old stadium into a winter wonderland with a tubing hill and skating track.

Last week, the Indians hosted just the second musical concert in the ballpark's history. Country star Brad Paisley and other acts drew more than 25,000 fans for the first show at Progressive Field since 1995, when Jimmy Buffett played in what was then known as Jacobs Field.

Outdoor hockey has become very popular in recent years, transporting the sport back to its purest fresh-air roots when kids learned the game on frozen ponds. The NHL's Winter Classic, played last season in the rain in Pittsburgh's Heinz Field, has given the league a showcase event to draw fans from outside its hardcore base.

Previous Winter Classics have been held outdoors in Buffalo's Ralph Wilson Stadium, Boston's Fenway Park and Chicago's Wrigley Field.

Re: Ohio State - It's officially the off-season

It'd have to be the weekend of the 13th and 14th, as that's the only mutual free weekend. Unless they do it mid-week (which I doubt).

Re: Ohio State - It's officially the off-season

Just pray for no SNOW on game day. I watched a pro NHL game played outside during a snowfall and it was a mess for puck movement.

Re: Ohio State - It's officially the off-season

soooooo.....

How do they make this a weekend series without detracting from hype around the outdoor game?

Since they are in the same cluster they will play four times. Does Michigan come to Columbus for a follow-up game on a different weekend? Can't believe OSU would give up an entire home series against the Wolverines. $$$$$

Do they play both games in Cleveland? See the above paragraph.

Is this just a college game or did Cleveland sneak in a bid for the NHL Winter Classic on the same weekend?

Since it's in Cleveland, would it be close enough to do a home/home?

I doubt it because then the 2nd series would have to be home/home. It might not be a stretch to have the Friday game in Columbus and then up to Cleveland for saturday but then neither team would be on the ice to practice before hand.

What about the possibility of a Sunday game? If you do it then, you could get it on BTN TV; doesn't BTN TV show bouncy-ball on Saturday night?

EDIT: Looks like this is the case. http://www.uscho.com/2011/06/16/michigan-ohio-state-to-play-outdoors-in-cleveland/

Congrats to Matt Bartkowski on hoisting Lord Stanley's Cup with the Bruins last night. (and condolences to Ryan Kessler...). What a series.:D

Re: Ohio State - It's officially the off-season

Friday night game would be best, the Browns will have a home palyoff game Saturday or Sunday.

LOL ... hope you're right about the Browns but I am not holding my breath on that one!

@Big Papa ... I just emailed the ticket office yesterday. They replied that they did not have any information on that just yet. When I find out, I will try to remember to put something out here.

Re: Ohio State - It's officially the off-season

After musing on the Alabama Huntsville thread, I noticed that there was rumor that you would be playing them this year. Do we know yet if the outdoor game in Cleveland will be a singleton, resulting in the other game with Michigan taking place at some other time in the year? Could it be possible that you'd be playing UAH in Nashville on January 13th, and then shooting back to play Michigan outdoors? Given you are playing Robert Morris in a singleton this year (at the Penguins' arena), there is another non-conference singleton to schedule. All of the ECAC is taken up, and although there's some room with Hockey East, I would think this is more likely.

Anything heard over there that would confirm or deny this hypothesis?

I was under the impression that OSU had a two year / four game deal with UAH. Two games in Columbus this season and two in Huntsville next season.

That may be the case, but I had some difficulty finding a weekend where that would be possible without messing the CCHA games not yet scheduled. You may have another single game the next year.

EDIT: February 17th and 18th is open. That's Ohio State's bye week for CCHA play.

Based on discussion over on the UAH thread and a link kindly posted by GF Morris, it appears the Buckeyes will play two in Huntsville in early November.
