Ohio State - It's officially the off-season

Re: Ohio State - It's officially the off-season

Exter looks like a good pickup for Oz's staff but my only question is did Brent leave willingly? I was under the impression from the beginning he was kept on last season because as a former player and coach for OSU he helped bridge the gap for Oz's first season but that his time was limited because once Oz was situated he would probably bring someone in along the lines of his own personal choice. There's nothing wrong in that as many new coaches rarely retain previous staff but I was just curious because OSU's official announcement of his departure made it sound like it was all Steve's decision which I highly doubt. Anyone think differently?

He quit for less than a year and came back to coaching. He was no longer needed for the transition and was fired. OSU's official announcement was just that - their clean, tidy official announcement. Makes everything so much more civilized.

Utterly predictible...

Here is how Ohio St. conducts business; you have a choice. Fired or resign.
Fired = pack your bags and get out now.
Resign = submit a letter and we will cover your insurance for six months.

Re: Ohio State - It's officially the off-season

Three young kids makes it very difficult to maintain the schedule necessary. I think in this case marriage came first. He quit coaching a few years ago and took a break because of family concerns, so there's no reason to believe anything else.

I would agree there's no reason to believe anything else IF you were dealing with someone other than the Ohio State Athletic Department.

The things I could tell you if this was a football forum and not a hockey one. Once ESPN wins their lawsuit against Ohio State and uncovers a few smoking guns the athletic department will have to go through the embarrassing transition to the transparency they should have had all along. Wonder what one would find in the files of the hockey program?

Well, at least for the '10-'11 academic year they would find that 4 men's team members and two women's team members were Big 10 Distinguished Scholars:

(in defense of the football team, they did have one player that qualified... :D)

and the football player (Scott Sika) is the brother of the former hockey broadcaster (Neil Sika).:)

Also should note that Sean Duddy has a perfect 4.0 GPA for the year.

Re: Ohio State - It's officially the off-season

With changes to the staff happening this offseason has anyone heard anything about if J.B. Bittner will be around still? Now that the team's website has been updated to include Exter there's no mention of him.

Re: Ohio State - It's officially the off-season

Gene Smith will probably be gone from Ohio State by the time the season begins. Hope the coming storm to the athletic department doesn't have any bad effect to the hockey program.

Re: Ohio State - It's officially the off-season

WBNS 10tv released a special report yesterday that Tressel DID report the violations to the athletic compliance which OSU strongly denies. If true this would make athletic director Gene Smith a liar. Once ESPN wins their lawsuit to have access to records then all will be laid bare and it has the potential to rock the athletic department to it's core if they were part of the cover up. Not trying to interject a football situation into the hockey forum but if the athletic department is implicated in serious NCAA violations it could have an impact in all our sports.

Re: Ohio State - It's officially the off-season

You should have checked WBNS two hours later. The NCAA ruled yesterday that none of that could be corroborated and there is not going to be any additional penalties.

Re: Ohio State - It's officially the off-season

Yes but don't forget the lawsuit to have access to the athletic dept's communications. If the evidence exists it will be found then and my source is quite adamant the evidence DOES exist. Almost every court across the country has ruled against how schools have used the FERPA law to stonewall release of information. I don't doubt Ohio's Supreme Court will rule any differently and then who knows what will come to light but I have a good idea.

Re: Ohio State - It's officially the off-season

Sorry, much ado about nothing. The requests have to be very specific as to their topic and any hint by a court that this is a "fishing expedition" will be rejected. I have no doubt that there will be some release of e-mails but they will be so heavily redacted as to be virtually worthless. The media will still scream, but the NCAA has made their ruling. The NCAA is the body of authority in this - the media is not, and the NCAA has already looked at those e-mails.

I have good reason to believe there are things yet to come to light that has been hidden from the NCAA so at this point all one can say is time will tell. I think we've made tremendous strides in upgrading our coaching and ability to recruit well and I would hate to see issues from another sport spill over and complicate things with hockey now that we're on track to get our program up to the level it should have been at years ago.

Im confused too. Did they get rid of him too? Not a good decision. He is a heart and soul guy that is a great asset to the program. Not a smart move!

Haven't heard for certain yet that he is gone. It just may be the updated website isn't complete. I can understand Oz wanting all his own picks on his bench staff but JB was put back to video, a position that one wouldn't think you'd need to bring in someone from the outside for. Hope Oz gives our hockey alumni considerations. A number of them were pretty ticked that Pooley wasn't even granted an interview so it may not take much to get them riled again especially if JB was dismissed. I just remembered who to call that may know about JB so maybe I'll have something to report on it by the weekend.

Got word today that JB was indeed let go by the university. Can't understand why. Even if he wasn't helping coach he was quite the spark plug in motivating the kids but did not hear if it was Oz's decision or the athletic departments. Did find out Brent's departure was not his call but apparently it was understood last season that this would probably be the case.

OK , let's get this party started. It will be fun to see if the Buckeyes can do some damage this season.
