Ohio State - It's officially the off-season

Re: Ohio State - It's officially the off-season

I noticed there were a ton more recruits than Srs leaving. What does that mean? Are players being cut?

Re: Ohio State - It's officially the off-season

Based on discussion over on the UAH thread and a link kindly posted by GF Morris, it appears the Buckeyes will play two in Huntsville in early November.

I saw that as well; it's been updated.

Still one more NC game to go. Potentials are North Dakota, Massachusetts Lowell, Vermont, and numerous Atlantic teams. Merrimack and Nebraska Omaha are also possibilities, but given they have 2 left instead of 1, they may try elsewhere.

If I counted correctly, there are 12 recruits incoming (Skoff is staying put in the USHL for another year). 10 Seniors left, and 3 players were cut early last season (2 Defense and 1 Forward), so I believe it is balanced. The Buckeyes only had 7 D last year, and with the departing seniors and incoming recruits, they will have 9 in 2011-2012, which is more typical. 3 goalies (Heeter, Hjelle, Michael), and however many forwards. The makeup of the team by class is not so different from the team that last went to the NCAA tourny in 2008-2009. If they play together as a team and we get some scoring (big if), might this team make some noise in the CCHA? Hope springs eternal. :)

cut for disciplinary issues? Or just cut because not good enough? I always thought that most College teams keep thier players once they make a commitment don't they?

Serious can of worms... If I recall correctly, one was a senior who stayed and finished his degree, two were juniors who left to continue playing (one in the WHL and the other at a university in Canada). Lots of 'discussion' on the boards regarding the basis for the decision to cut who was cut. Discipline issues were not involved. Hopefully it does not rear its ugly head again...

They do...unless the players breach their NCAA contract. Until Osiecki took over at Ohio State. He released three Canadian players last October and told them it was due to "numbers". Precedent now set for any college to do the same. Once the two juniors left, their scholarship money is freed up for some heavy duty recruiting by the new coaching staff.
Lengthy article on Taylor Stefishen (5th round NHL draft pick) by Dean Millard of the Pipeline show written after he and the other boys were released...some interesting reading.
Who knows what this season will bring? More cuts...possibly. Only 9 D so far, but last year only 7 after the cuts. Some forwards last year saw very few games..probably even less this year if they stick around. We'll have to wait and see what happens.

Most D-1 teams seem to cut Seniors if they have JR and SO that are equal or better.

Looks like Coach OZ is staying close to Ohio this season. This is the big year for Coach on his wins and loss record. " GO BUCKS GO. "

Re: Ohio State - It's officially the off-season

I look for something above .500. Next year is the critical year for him. Trying to be patient.

I agree .500 or just above this coming season would be a decent season for me. Next year will be the critical season for him he will have his 1st team of mostly his recurits and will need to show improvement from year 2 to 3.

Re: Ohio State - It's officially the off-season

Congrats to incoming Buckeyes and NHL draft picks Dzingel (7th round), Jardine (6th round), and McCormick (6th round). Should be pretty solid substrate for Coach Oz to work with this year. Although the Freshman class will be big and the Senior class puny, the same was true in 2008-2009 when we made a run to the NCAA tourny. With the right leadership and if the team gets with the program and comes together under Coach Osiecki's system, they could make some waves and suprise folks in the CCHA. Hope springs eternal. :D

Re: Ohio State - It's officially the off-season

interesting article.

The two sports at OSU with the biggest increase in recruiting budgets over the last two years are baseball (+37.30%) and a budget of $18,090, and men's ice hockey (+34.60%) with a budget of $85,000.
I asked about the over 34% increase in recruiting budget for men’s ice hockey and was told that it was a product of a new coach who wanted to place a greater emphasis on recruiting. In looking at the line item budget for men’s ice hockey, there is an overall 4.8% increase in expenses for the 2011-2012 school year, although there is also a 4.5% increase expected in revenue with increased ticket sales.

link to the entire article which lists budgets for every sport.

Re: Ohio State - It's officially the off-season

Exter looks like a good pickup for Oz's staff but my only question is did Brent leave willingly? I was under the impression from the beginning he was kept on last season because as a former player and coach for OSU he helped bridge the gap for Oz's first season but that his time was limited because once Oz was situated he would probably bring someone in along the lines of his own personal choice. There's nothing wrong in that as many new coaches rarely retain previous staff but I was just curious because OSU's official announcement of his departure made it sound like it was all Steve's decision which I highly doubt. Anyone think differently?

Three young kids makes it very difficult to maintain the schedule necessary. I think in this case marriage came first. He quit coaching a few years ago and took a break because of family concerns, so there's no reason to believe anything else.

Re: Ohio State - It's officially the off-season

You only have 2 NC series this year and a holiday tourney?

These leagues really do need to get smaller.
