Re: Ohio State - It's officially the off-season
I don't have a problem with a new coach taking a two or three year verbal commitment off the table from a prior coaching regime BEFORE a player arrives at the school. It happens. Any player/family that verbally commits to a school when the kid is 16 years old or younger has to expect that things may change in two or three years down the road. A new coach coming into a program should take the time to look at the recruits coming in and evaluate for himself.
Case in point is Brad Smith RW. He was a commit for Ohio State 11/9/2006. Still listed as a 2011 recruit after Osiecki took over until just after this past Christmas. Obviously, he doesn't fit into Osiecki's plans, so is no longer on the incoming recruit list.
Do I feel badly for the kid? Yes. But, like Oddo, will hopefully find something else. My issue is Osiecki cutting players (2 Juniors and a Senior) on the existing roster three weeks into the school year for no other reason other than he wanted their scholarship money for recruiting for 2011. He told all three of the Canadians that they were being released due to a "numbers" issue.
Just take a look at the size of his recruiting class coming in...how many are we up to now? Lots of extra cash to play with now that two "foreign" scholarships were freed up in their senior year.
And...since you brought it up....how many players did Blais at UNO cut from the existing roster when he took over as head coach? Zero.
I'm flattered that you remembered....Very crowded...this is going to be interesting...
Here is another Oddo article, evidently one time rated highly enough to be ranked by CSB, an early UNO commit, and it appears a combination of coaching change and perhaps lack of development caused UNO to pull the scholarship....
I wonder if our friend who is so concerned about OZ running people off will take it upon himself to carry on a one man campaign against Blais and UNO over this one...
